Free Music Notes for Round About Midnight

Free Music Review: It grows.
Hit: 5 Stars

Why is this one of the best Miles Davis albums? Aside from the haunting vesion of "Round Midnight", not many other songs are as arresting on he album--but, they really are. Context is the key. This album grows on you within the framework of the world of context. Some may find the "standard" pieces boring, but they show a great amount of the precise blowing that Davis would use with Gil Evans and would never really lose, whereas Coltrane was vaulting toward a totally unique approach to space, timing and rhythm. It also seems that this is one of the best groups Davis fielded. With Philly Joe Jones, Red Garland and Paul Chambers, the backbone of the band couldn't have been better. Coltrane is slightly adventurous and Davis is, of course, on point throughout. If you want a somewhat simpler Miles day, buy this, if you are more of a casual jazz listener, this would be perfect if you can not tolerate full-on be-bop. Three parting words: "Dear Old Stockholm".

Free Music Review: classic Miles
Hit: 5 Stars

'Round About Midnight was Miles' first full-length release for Columbia, and one of the most beautiful of his career. Widely considered to be among the best groups in the history of jazz, the legendary quintet (which changed slightly over time) included John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on the drums. In addition to the six tracks that were on the original release, the newly remastered version includes four bonus tracks--Jackie McLean's exploratory "Little Melonae," an updated version of "Budo" (both from the deleted album, Miles and Coltrane), an alternate version of "Two Bass Hit," and the rarity, "Sweet Sue, Just You." This album is an essential part of any Miles collection.

Free Music Review: Miles above the rest
Hit: 5 Stars

Miles Davis was so smooth that he along with Coltrane and buddies made veteran musicians look rough around the edges. Round About Midnight is exactly the type of album that lives up to the hype. Miles Davis was so groundbreaking and was so dominant in directing jazz tendencies that every single album begs to be listened to, but among his elite are Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, Bitches Brew and Round About Midnight. No jazz enthusiast should do without these albums and no poser wanting to appear to be knowledgeable of jazz should do without these albums. That way, they'll know what to listen for and become educated with excellence. Like most of the best of Miles, this album is best served chilled, with a nice bottle of wine and some great company.

Free Music Review: 1st class Miles plus some hot Trane
Hit: 5 Stars

It's really hard to disagree with most of the reviewers; this is Miles at his lyrical and contemplative best, and John Coltrane is really spicing the things up with his rough tenor; contrasting the leader's horn very effectivelly...

And yes, this is the album that has both the magnificent version of Monk's 'Round Midnight and the beautiful and extremely creative version of children song Bye Bye Blackbird! But there is also boppish Ah-Leu-Cha, sentimental and ironic All of You...

Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on the bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums are a rhythm section at the same time powerfull and subtle, ideal for supporting and inspiring the horns...

Free Music Review: EVEN THE SLEEVE IS PRICELESS
Hit: 5 Stars

I first bought this album twenty years ago on vinyl. This was my introduction to MILES DAVIS, and naturally i was hooked on this version of ROUND MIDNIGHT.The beginning of a great collaboration of two musicians is always fascinating in retrospect. With added tracks on this cd edition ,this might be MILES's best ever(now don't jump on the ceiling). The muted DAVIS and the lyrical COLTRANE completes eachother like very few in the history of jazz.I would even suggest to you that you should buy this instead of the single cd highlighting the works of MILES and COLTRANE.This is a much more satisfying experience.Easily one of the best jazz cd one can buy, even the sleeve is a work of art.
