It's really hard to believe how everyone seems to be so quick to diss this album!Speaking not as some fan of 80's pop culture who may or may not have seen Miles in Miami Vice - Season One or in Cameo's music video for "Single Life" this album has a lot of truly amazing and rousing music on it,especially for a guy who once remarked he "tugged at your ears a little softer". Perhaps his playing did but years of dealing with some heavy, rhythmic vamps and such in the 70's prepared him in a way to deal with the 80's. This is an album where Miles embraced the backdrop of mid 80's funk and pop/rock,meaning that the Robert Irving/Vince Wilburn/Dr.George Butler production uses a lot of layored synths and miked up drums. On the other hand between Al Foster's drums, the great Darryl "The Munch" Jones popping away on the bass and John Scofield and John McLaughlin's guitars weaving around it,depending on the song it's pretty clear this is no "easy listening" smooth jazz-type collection;the rhythmic ideas that Miles was going for on On the Corner were still very much out front.Main difference is there is an attempt to turn it into a musical formula,or as writer Ricky Vincent called it "formula rhythms".But I personally cannot agree they aren't funky."One Phone Call/Street Scenes" alone is a perfect example where around a backdrop of Miles and Sting "having it out" in this crazy mock cops 'n robbers routine the musicians create this great, almost cinimatic funkiness that has a certain blacksploitation era chase scene feel to it,as if it were modernized for that era.The cover of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" actually takes a warmer, more happy approch then MJ's mournful take-must have had a lot to do with Mile's mood at the time.Alright so there is a hint of sadness in his playing but it's definately more of a recovery from gloom then anything-kind of a "morning after" outlook."Something's On Your Mind" and "Katia" both lay down extended fusion/funk jams where there's a strong sense of communal playing very much out of the 70's Miles ethic. The title song is definately the funkiest jam on the album, everything from the bassline to Miles himself knows where it's coming from, and the percussion on this and many of the other tunes is just where it ought to be anyway."Time After Time"....well it's another cover and doesn't quite have the same feeling of "Human Nature" but it's pleasant enough."Ms.Morrisine" is very interesting in that, not only is this the darkest tune here but the revered kind of "rock/ska" beat actually recalls The Police in a way;considering Sting made that guest appearance on this album it kind of went with the program. The closing medley of "Jean Pierre/Then There Were None" with the melody of the title song is a nice cool down if very subdued compared to the strong grooves and rhythms that proceeded it. It is truly unfair that so many people view this album as "crap". That's a pretty mean thing to say anyway but that aside it's not accurate because,if you listen to a lot of electric jazz/funk from this era this runs with the best order of the pack!
