Free Music Notes for BreakoutFree Music Review: Not exactly breaking out yet, but its all good! Hit: 5 Stars
I don't listen to Miley Cyrus expecting deep lyrics or even really great music, I expect to listen to sappy but catchy pop, and this is exactly that (maybe even taking it a step further into good sap).
1. Breakout- A song that I thought was just mediocre at first but now I find the chorus to this song being stuck in my head. Now it is definately one of my favorites. Really cheesey lyrics but in a good way. My friends are just taken aback when I randomly say "Let go- oh- oh" in the middle of conversations. 9/10
2. 7 Things -
Really good production and instrumentation, and Mileys vocals are perfect for this type of song. 9.5/10
3. The Driveway - You can hear a bit of country twang in Miley's vocals in this song which is really fun. An enjoyable song whose chorus feels like something fresh and new. However inventive this song might be, I might find myself skipping through this track at times. 8/10
4. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Some might say this cover is unecessary, but this song has the "girl power" message that most of Miley's songs try to send out. I'm sure Miley must've had fun recording this song and is a Cyndi Lauper fan. An okay song. 7.5/10
5. Full Circle - One of my favorite songs on the album. Here is where we see Miley's possible future as an excellent songwriter, but shes not quite there yet as she did not write this song all by herself. The bridge to this song is what really took me by surprise and made me fall in love with this song. If you want to know why just listen to the "I'll keep on running 'till we meet in the middle / I'll put pride aside and I'll give just a little". Miley might not have the best vocals but her mannerisms and ad-libs more than make up for it, as she ends up sounding like something that would make Stevie Nicks jealous. 10/10
6. Fly On The Wall - My favorite track on the album. Great lyrics, great production, inventive chorus, just all around a very well put together song. Again, the bridge to this song only adds to my love for this song. She screeches out a very un-disney-like bridge, and the first time you hear it you are caught by surprise. Ill keep it that as you must listen to this song for yourself, I have converted many Miley "haters" with this song alone. 10/10
7. Bottom of The Ocean - Showcases Miley's nasally vocals, but the lyrics are better than your average pop fodder. Then I heard this song was about her dead goldfish? It's obviously about Nick. An okay song. 7/10
8. Wake Up America - Good message to Cyrus's younger fans, catchy, first time I heard it, Miley's vocals reminded me of the lead from NOFX. 9/10
9. These Four Walls - Eh. It can be a little too country for me, but I still find myself singing it from time to time. This might be my least favorite track on the album. 6.5/10
10. Simple Song - Very good lyrics, too bad Miley has no credit on them. Catchy and it has a meaning. 9.5/10
11. Goodbye - Very impressed with Miley's vocals in the chorus, but leading up to the chorus can be very nasally and breathy. I'll let it pass because she puts true emotion in to this song and the lyrics are very heartfelt. One of my favorites! 10/10
Free Music Review: A true step up Hit: 5 Stars
The true test of a tween pop album is how much it grows on you. And while this album isn't exactly tween, it definitely passes that test with flying colors. In the first listen, I didn't quite catch its magic, but even by the second listen it had begun its move up to one of my favorite cds. It certainly does show that Miley is growing up, and it showcases her talent in a way the Hannah Montana albums could not. Typical tween is about catchy melodies and snazzy production, and Miley's done that well in the past, but in this album we find that hidden behind all of that is a voice that can carry the kind of depth and emotion that makes an artist. It also reveals a kind of maturity that didn't show up on Hilary Duff's albums until she was 20.
The first track, Breakout, is less than exceptional. It's basically in the same vein of "We've Got the Party" and could have come straight off of a Hannah Montana album. Which is good enough in itself, but it doesn't quite fit into this album that's strength is the way in which it moves beyond the typical tween.
7 Things is, of course, one of the most highly addictive songs out there, and Fly On The Wall is right up there with it. I really like the edge both of these have, and I would love to get more like these from Miley in the future.
As far as the cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun goes, Miley is of course no Cyndi Lauper. But Miley's version is sung with some kind of feel of pathos or desperation that was totally missing from the original, which may not be what she intended, but it makes for a very interesting track.
The cover of These Four Walls is definitely far better than the original. In comparing Miley's cut to Cheyenne Kimball's, the real depth and emotion that Miley's got becomes totally apparent. Despite the fact that Miley's is much younger, she sings with a great deal more maturity and artistry. And the country feel of this track really suits Miley.
Full Circle and Simple Song are two of the gems of this album. Simple Song in particular is very beautiful and a little heartbreaking. It both makes you admire Miley's talent and mourn a little for what she's lost because of it.
All in all, what Breakout shows is that Miley is not just another tween pop sensation, but a true artist with a real capacity for growth. I do wish we could give her the grace to grow a little more out of the spotlight. But this album does show that Miley's fame is not just the result of Disney marketing and a Wal-Mart product line. She's got real talent. And this is one adult fan who can't wait for more.
Free Music Review: More Musically Mature Miley Hit: 5 Stars
OK, I have to admit I bought this CD out of curiosity. I'm not one of Miley's core fan-base, far from it; I'm a music fan in my mid-30's whose tastes run the gamut of a vast musical spectrum. Not knowing a lot of about this teen phenom, I thought I'd take a chance and see what all the fuss is about! I admit I was expecting this album to be geared solely toward the teen and pre-teen age-group, but from the opening notes of the first song, I knew instantly this was something more substantial. Miley Cyrus is no longer just a kid, she's becoming a young woman whose voice has a maturity to it that belies her years. She carries a tune well, and has a good ear and musicianship that some singers twice her age are lacking. She shows promise in becoming a great power ballad vocalist in the future. I got the sense that this album is a stepping stone for Miley; that with each consecutive project, she will reach a new plateau as an entertainer and now songwriter. Yes songwriter! Breakout is indeed an apt title for this album, for Miley is without a doubt breaking out of the mold of being just a stereotypical kid singing cupie doll, sing-a-long material. True, the title song does sound like it might be an out-take from one of the High School Musicals, but it's kinda catchy just the same. My favorites include her current single "7 Things", "The Driveway", "Bottom of The Ocean" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Yes, I like Miley's take on Cyndi Lauper's signature tune. I'd even go so far as to say I like it better than the original....and I was about Miley's age when the original was topping the charts. She gives it a fresh new life, and the lyrics seem to fit her well. Bottom line is this...if you've only thought of Miley Cyrus as someone being in the same league as say Barney or Sponge Bob, think again. Give this album a listen...a real listen with an open mind. You just might be surprised at what you hear. I know I was, and will definitely be looking forward to her next studio album. I give it five stars for a five star effort.
Free Music Review: Miley does not disappoint Hit: 5 Stars
Miley Cyrus does not disappoint in her first stand alone CD. Do you realize this is the first album in stores that will not be filed under the "soundtrack" genre as the Hannah Montana and Hannah Montana 2 CD's were?
Miley writes or co-writes all but 3 of the songs on the album. Those she did not pen were "Girls Just wanna have fun" (a dance mix of the original 80's classic), "These four walls" (a soulful remix of Cheynne Kimball's song), and Simple Song (written by Jeffrey Steele about a chaotic lifestyle and wanting to break free from it and for me the second best on the album).
All the other songs on the album she had a hand in the writing and are filled with emotion and depth beyond her 15 years. Each song is meaningful in it's own way, from the carefree "Breakout", to "Wake up America" about global warming and waking up to what we are doing to the planet. To the funky "Fly on the wall" about rumors and trust. Then there are the soulful ballads like "Bottom of the Ocean" and "Goodbye" (my favorite on the album) which both could be top 10 hits for Miley if released as singles.
Overall this album is an amazing acheivement for someone so young. No her voice is not perfect, and that's what makes this music all the more enjoyable to me. She is not your typical artist, she has her own unique sound and style and that seems to be why many people have a problem with her. She's not the best singer and she admits it, and even said she wanted clunker notes on this album to show that this wasn't about perfection it was about the music.
Fans of Hannah Montana and Miley's first CD "Meet Miley Cyrus" will see this as a step away from those albums, but they will still be able to recognize the artist that they have come to love.
I know I have and I'm 34, my daughter intoduced me to Miss Cyrus and I'm grateful that we have music that we both enjoy listening to no matter how many times it's repeated.
Free Music Review: Breakout track by track Hit: 5 Stars
Miley Cyrus second album, and first without anything in relation a Hannah Montana, here the track by track:
Breakout - The title song is cool, i'm not a big fan of so fun and happy music, but it's very catchy. 7/10
7 Things - One of the worst songs, it starts cool, but the chorus is annoying. 3/10
The Driveway - Beautiful song, one of the best and her voice is nice in the chorus. 9/10
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - The rock cover of Cyndi Lauper hit it's not so good, the chorus is annoying, but the part when she sings "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is funny, and she could not scream too much in this song, it just don't need this. 6/10
Full Circle - The third best song, the chorus is cool and remembers me of Avril Lavigne, with a better voice (or not). 8/10
Fly On The Wall - The worst song, the beat is cool, but the chorus... 1/10
Bottom Of The Ocean - This is the best song, and was the reason why i bought the album. the rythmyn is awesome and her voice is beautiful. It remembers me of "The Little Mermaid" it could be a song of it soundtrack.
10/10
Wake Up America - Bad song, songs with "America" in the tittle never were good.2/10
These Four Walls - This cover is good, and her version is better than the original. 8/10
Simple Song - Bad song, and the title is weird. 4/10
Goodbye - Beautiful song, very emotional and innocent. 10/10
See You Again (Remix) - This remix is good, but it could be better. 8/10
Overall grade - 8/10, The album is good, she tried to do something different from the pop of hannah montana moving for a more rock song, it maybe not be good received by her fans, but it stills better than "Meet Miley Cyrus".
