Very classy late 1960s euro-pop from Italy's famous pop icon.
Mina (actually Mina Anna Mazzini) started as main female music attraction of post-WW2 Italy and her youthful clowning,exuberance and rebellion were at odds with serious bel canto tradition popular at the time,it was because of her early rock'n'roll records that she became known as "queen of screamers" and got equal share of criticism and adoration.
Some say that her early 1960s records - that find her still sparkling in particular youthful playfulness - are her best and it has to be said that early Mina definitely was at her peak as her music became soundtrack of people's lives and that particular italian reneissance that we now remember as San Remo,movies,tourism,fashion and italian pop culture of early 1960s in general. Though she continued to record,perform and chart hits for decades afterwards that first eruption of fame,Mina would never again catch spirit of the whole country - or it was simply that times have changed and as new decade came along,Mina herself had changed,calmed down,became more serious and refined her approach so much that her younger self would have probably be amazed to see this later artist,icy and melancholic.
This particular album was recorded in 1969. (year I was born!) and music is serious but never bombastic - orchestrated ballads with occasional Bossa Nova flavour here and there,poetic lyrics and mostly very resigned-sounding singer.
It is also very important as it marked Mina's very first collaboration with Mogol who composed serious ballad "Non credere" specially for her - it became one of the best-selling singles of the year and it lead to future collaboration on several of her finest early albums,this one turning into nr.1 on italian charts that year.
The singer closest to late-1960s Mina might be Shirley Bassey,but where Bassey belted,Mina was very composed,her naturally strong voice controlled and channeled into melancholy and introspection,not only very appealing voice in itself but also impressive way it was used with intelligence and acting the lyrics.
Big drama,for sure,but done with style and taste - everything from music arrangements and song selection to interpretation is first class.
