Free Music Review: Quality through Homogeny

There's a hard-standing rule regarding most any EBM/Industrial band (pretty much every band on Metropolis records): avoid their first two albums, even if you love the band after that. ESPECIALLY if you love the band after that. Lost Alone is unique in its exception.
The title is fitting: it is a highly personal journey into the solitude and pain of a single man. The beauty of the narrative is in its lack of melodrama: it's not a showcase for Markus Hadwiger's singing, or screaming, but a straightforward journal of loneliness, with enough melody to keep it beautifully human. Stefan Poiss's music is the perfect accompaniment. Well-produced, melancholy synths and predictable beats keep you dancing and trancing through song to song, which blend together to form one solid overarch.
What brings the album down to four stars is its lack of variety. The album being a long, trancelike journey through loneliness relies on the same sounds to do so from beginning to end. The same homogeny that makes this album solid makes it simple, hurting its replay value. It sounds too familiar after just a few listens.
Overall, a great cd. I'd recommend it to any fan of the genre.
