Free Music Review: Minnie's Legacy Of Excellence

Few people I can think of were in the right place in the right time as much as Minnie Riperton was in terms of presenting her music to the world. During the early to mid 70's R&B,rock,pop,jazz and blues were all blending together into this fairly young genre called funk. Not only that but this unique cross pollination as well as a sense of spiritually inclined creativity was putting the same quality back into those different genres that made it. Than came this former lead singer of the band Rotary Connection named Minnie Riperton with an unearthily rangey singing voice and the good taste to know what material it worked best with. The first album presented here is of course her best known. Unlike a lot of R&B albums even from that period this album has a lot of country-western and folky flavors to it,particularly in tunes such as "Reasons","It's So Nice (To See Old Friends)" and "Seeing You This Way". They are all excellent hybrids of down home country-rock and soul music,apparently taking a cue in the similar hybrid theory of Ray Charles a decade or so earlier. It's the presense of Stevie Wonder that add this jazzy-funk flavor to the wonderous and highly underrated "Take A Little Trip" and the title song,both easy highlites of the album. Stevie also comes in to play his harp on the journeying jazzy R&B fusion of "Our Lives". "Every Time He Comes Around" is the heavist song on this album,mining the heavy and fuzzed out psychedelic soul that finds Minnie thoroughly exploring her range from low to high and back again. "Lovin' You" is of course the tune most people know from this and it's interesting to hear her reference to her daughter Mya in conclusion of the song. "The Edge Of A Dream" has a similar flavor-that combo of folk and orchestral soul. The follow up is a totally different affair entirely. While it's a melodies and harmonics structures are as unmistakably Minnie as the previous album,the music is based heavier in funk grooves and is a lot more sleekly produced. You really hear that come to the surface in the transition from "Our Lives" to the bottom heavy,bassy "Baby,This Love I Have";you can tell time has passed between them but it seems like more than a year. The title track of the 1975 album is of course the most potent song here;it's poetic lyrics and strong rhythm certainly make it a funk classic to be had. It's one of the most romantic songs funk produced during 1975. "Inside My Love" really takes the funky smooth groove to new heights as the double entadre of the lyrics ("you can come inside me") is amply explored through the music. The remainder of the album explores songs that range from soothing to festive. The musicality and diverse sensability of that time is very much in attendance on both of these albums,as is the wonderous voice singing the songs. True what the other reviewers are true;the standards for singers from here on in did get progressively lower. Same goes for songwriting and Minnie WAS a writer:a factor all too often forgotton. There are many reasons for that. But it's better not to complain than to listen to this and,just maybe one will catch the spirit and raputurous interest in the music that people such as Minnie were deeply committed to in her all to brief lifetime.
