Free Music Review: Depends on how you look at it...
Hit: 5 Stars

For me this album had all the meaning that a really good book can have, inasfar as I feel it changed my life. It showed clearly, and with perfect sincerity, how one could regain a relatively stable, morally sound life out of the MTV-Morass that American culture had become (and still is). And all of this coming from a genuinely punk perspective, stripped of anything weird, i.e. religious stuff. Granted, you can see how the philosophy involved colors one's view of the music- I could never separate the philosophy from the music. The philosophy made the music all the more powerful. In contrast, I listen to musically powerful songs whose message is inherently confused - Sex Pistol's "Holidays In The Sun" for example, where they attempt some kind of cool punk-rock look into Communism - and the effect wanes. What is punk rock when you subtract its message and feeling? Power chords and distortion, I guess.

It's interesting to see some reviewers essentially asking the more die-hard or hardcore followers of this way of thinking to relent: and Im sure there have been a fair-share of people with a boorish exposition of Straight Edge and the "message" expressed in this music, who have tired you with their 'preaching'. Young people often take themselves and their principles too seriously, and go to extremes in the name of something they believe in: now its time for YOU to get over that fact, as an observer. We can mellow in our late 20s and 30s, its inevitable anyway, but the music which Ian made was as serious as life is, and I find his stance more admirable than the wishy-washy coolness of whatever bands you care to name. This album is for me pure distilled brilliance, but of course it speaks to some more than others.

Free Music Review: Why Is It that Minor Threat Own?I sure ...don't know.
Hit: 5 Stars

Now I by no means am a fan of hardcore music so it baffles me why this album basically defines and sums up what is good about hardcore music. Now there may be some people that criticize this album because the singer is straight edge. Now I hate straight edge kids today, not because they eat vegetables, but because they are discriminating hypocrites. Ian Mckaye, the singer and Minor Threat was not the same. He truly believed what he was talking about, and you can tell in the music. Who says this is not fun music? I say it is as fun as it can get, in a hardcore sort of way. The first song, Filler gives a glimpse of the album. Ian Mckaye, screams his lungs out, but not in a way that you can't hear what he says. In fact you can hear most of the lyrics clearly. This album pulls out a big bag of expletives so I don't recommend it for the faint of heart. Plus the faint of heart don't have good taste in music anyway. Some of the highlights of this album are seminal Straight Edge which passes by in just forty-six seconds, the song Minor Threat which sums up their political ideals pretty quickly, In My Eyes (My personal favorite) is probably the angriest song on the album and his full of just pure energy. Now Guilty Of Being Of White is a great song and makes you stop and think. You'll see what I mean when you hear it. The whole album is amazing and there is by no means even close to resembling a weak track. 26 songs and they fly by in just 45 minutes, leaving a great effect upon the listener. This album is what hardcore is all about, and even if you are not a hardcore fan (like me) you should at least like this album. This album is one of my favorites and should be everyone else's too.

Listening to this record never boring or played out it is a timeless record you can definitly hear the evolution from red-out of step-salad days. The first minor threat (red) was a brutal record commenting on social issues such as asex drinking self loathing anger and awkardness the lyrics were absolute blue print fo hardcore totally distancing themselves from the punk rock junkie image they were about blue collar white kids rejecting drugs sex and conceit they rebelled against the rebellious something no rock and roll band had ever done so outspokenly the lyrics were brilliant they scathed societys weaknesses and vices mocking jocks, reborn christians, promoters and a&r people the music was fast as hell on red very short songs no fillers they even covered a monkees song and it sounded good no doubt in my eyes is probally the stand out song on red guilty of being white, seeing red, and other classics as well the next record out of step was the greatest hardcore recording besides bad brains roir sessions they evoved tremendously musically it wasnt a fast and brutal record it was totally original no punk or metal record had sounded like this on out of step they created a brilliant mix of fast/slow/distorted/clean/ music the record opens up with betray a really fast in your face type song each song on the record sounded different than the next one with dance parts or mosh parts whatever you wanna call them infecting the whole recording a must buy for anyone that likes music whether your a metalhead punker ska kid hardcore kid or oi boy theres no denying this record is the most groundbreaking record of the 1980"s hc/punk scene

Free Music Review: It's been said, but this is the BEST!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

The first time i listened to Minor Threat, frankly, I didn't like it. The music was too fast and it was devoid of any melody(that i heard at the time). Ian's vocals were screamed so fast and unintelligibly, that it turned me off at first. At the time I was listening to Rancid, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols. I bought the Blue Minor Threat tape, thinking it would be along those lines. It wasn't. But there was something infectious about the music that kept me coming back for more. I didn't know what straight edge meant at the time,(i thought it was some reference to cocaine) and I wan't sure what the hell Ian was talking about. Then I started analyzing the lyrics. They cut with such razor sharp poingancy and heartfelt honesty that the music started to make my stomach churn. I finally got it. This music blew away my old punk records. Minor Threat presented rage in an honest and beautiful way, whereas the Sex Pistols were just out to shock people. Musically these guys were tighter than 95 percent of the hardcore bands of their day, and the music stands up. Ian's lyrics stand as some of the best, dare I say it, "rock" lyrics of all time. I can only imagine how revolutionary this band must have been when they came out, both musically and politically. All I know is that I can still put this record on in my room and roll around like an idiot, get all sweaty, and sing along, and love every second of it. This record transcends punk, hardcore, or any B.S. label like that. This music is timeless, and it WILL live forever, albeit, a little Out of Step...

Free Music Review: Hardcore At Its Purest
Hit: 5 Stars

It's silly nowadays how many kids refer some "Nu-Metal" bands as "Hardcore".I've heard kids saying "Korn is hardcore", "Limp Bizkit is hardcore" and so forth. While those bands have their own magic, they have nothing to do with my (and many, many others!) definition of hardcore.A fine example of the genre was Washington D.C.'s MINOR THREAT. The band sprung out of the ashes of another seminal band, TEEN IDLES, and head off to lead the american hardcore movement. MINOR THREAT played with such ferocious abandon that many people (including early 80's metalheads) wrote them off as pure trash. Their unbelievable speed, screamed-out vocal delivery and downright pummeling guitar sound paved the way for hundreds of Punk bands and helped influence the then fledgeling Thrash Metal movement, pioneered by Metallica and Slayer. Their "Complete Discography" sums up thier short, albeit, hugely influential career. Their first 2 EPs (songs 1 through 14) are their most savage and intense. The rest of the CD is made up of thier "Out Of Step" album; their only "true" album and one that sees the band going for a more melodic approach while still retaining some of their early-days speed and fury. MINOR THREAT was also among the first hardcore bands to deal with more personal issues in their lyrics, as opposed to being overtly political, which was the norm at the time for most punk bands. Their song "Straight Edge" even gave birth to a whole new movement, where drugs, alcohol and promiscuous sex are a no-no. If you truly want to experience TRUE Hardcore, this IS the place to start!
