Free Music Review: not a kid reviewer, just an angry punk
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm in my 30s, not 13 or younger, but I'm pissed and didn't want to leave my email address. To that kid who called Minor Threat talentless posers and said listen to Good Charlotte and Sum 41 instead, you have got to be f***ing kidding me. If you think that Good Charlotte is punk, than you don't know what punk is. It's not a fashion statement, it's a lifestyle and an attitude. You little Hot Topic posers have ruined what used to be a great scene, a scene that actually once meant something. And you know what else? Real punk bands hate you little bastards. I know this because I am friends with many of them and we laugh at you. Minor Threat is one of the greatest, most influential punk bands of all time. Instead of whining about how their dad sucks or how much they love their girlfriend, their lyrics actually mean something. Instead of being obsessed with money and getting laid, they cared about the music and making a difference. That, my young friends, is punk.

This would be the holy grail of STRAIGHT EDGE. Not to mention the actual genesis of EMO given that the seed planted here sprouted into Fugazi by way of Rites Of Spring. Pick your movement. Classify your soul. I don't care. Fight amongst yourselves. Clearly Ian WAS screaming at a wall. At any rate, this collection (red or blue) was the template for the DC Hardcore scene of the late eighties. For good reason too, the songs are short furious blasts of self-righteous indignation. Well-crafted gems of rage. In a scene over-run by drugs, anonymous sex, & mindless violence Minor Threat asked some tough questions...and did so with ten times the fury of their peers. Aside fom the youthful ignorance of "Guilty For Being White" this is weighty stuff. Shockingly honest. Angst to be sure but insightful & brave. This CD is a must-have.

Their influence runs deep. They've been covered by the Beastie Boys & Rage Against The Machine (among others).

Free Music Review: Greatest Alternative Record in Existence
Hit: 5 Stars

You know, I'm getting tired of all this hype about "straight edge." I'm sorry to burst the younger generation's bubble, but this music was not about "straight edge" at all. I had friends in DC and Virginia who knew Brian Baker and Jeff Nelson from way back, and this is NOT a slam, but they were not exactly puritans. Ian sang "Straight Edge" to express his individual preferences. But the "ethos" was mostly just underage suburban kids' sour grapes. Sorry!

Buzzwords and the pigeon-holing effect of "movements" just obscure the fact that this is the most exciting music ever made, anywhere. Even now, in my 30's, I cannot listen to it on the tinniest little tape player without wanting to jump up and down and exult. Fiercely committed, utterly driven and explosive beyond old-school punk rock's wildest dreams, this band has never been bettered. A permanently relevant masterpiece.

Free Music Review: straight edge brilliance
Hit: 5 Stars

Ian Mackaye and the boys deliver one of the best albums to have come out in the 80s punk scene. Think about it, in a time where most bands were singing "hungry like the wolf" they were talking about individualism, fighting the desire to conform to the assimilating establishment--an idea lost on many new and upcoming punk bands. Labelled as straight edge and not your typical lager lout, debauchery-loving guys this album is more of a tribute to ideals than to the pervading mediocrity of so many "punk" bands (read:Blink 182,Green Day, Offspring). Songs like: I Don't Wanna Hear It, In My Eyes, Out of Step instills that wrathful energy that only punk can saturate in your psyche. This is one of the remaining compilations left of a band whose influence sustained and took our music into a totally intellectual sphere. Piercings and tatooes don't make you punk kids, your brain does.

Free Music Review: I am not worthy to review this album.

"Hah!" I can hear Ian MacKaye spitting at me. What it means, I don't know. For a one-time suburban kid who happened to date a skater betty for a year or so, this album cleared out my sinuses for all time. No one had more righteous attitude than Ian, and no one yelled it better. Coming from the likes of Pink Floyd, though, I found it a bit jarring at first, but it sinks in, and now there's really nothing to compare with it. I heard this one before Never Mind the Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols, and to be quite truthful, Johnny Rotten and Co. nearly sound like a frat band compared with Minor Threat. There's just enough melody here to coax a first-time listener in, especially toward the end, and...well, what else can I say? It's probably the best punk album of all time...certainly the best hardcore punk album, and you don't even need to be straight-edge to love it. Absolutely essential.
