Free Music Notes for KeroseneFree Music Review: Great CD/Artist Hit: 5 Stars
I'd have to say Miranda Lambert is now my favorite artist. All of the songs on Kerosene are awesome. Her voice is amazing, and even if you don't like this type of music, the lyrics to some of the songs such as There's A Wall or Bring Me Down may still get to you, and you have to admit she is quite the singer/artist. I absolutely hated country about a year ago, but then I started getting into it more and now I'm a huge fan. I owe a lot of that to Miranda Lambert. Her songs "Me And Charlie Talking" and "Bring Me Down" caused me to watch CMT a lot when I was home, and I've discovered a lot of other good country artists because of that. But Kerosene is a great CD and I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone. I'd like to give a song by song evaluation so you can see where I think the strong points are and where the weak parts, if any, are.
1. Kerosene- 9/10 - Probably the fastest song on this CD. It's kind of rockish but overall just country. In my opinion, it's mostly about being bored in her town and about a lost love. I don't really relate to it, and I can't really read into it, but I like this song the way she sings it and with the music. Not as catchy as some of the songs, but still kind of catchy. "I'm giving up on love cause love's given up on me"
2. What About Georgia?- 8/10 - About someone who has left home but assuring them people at home are still thinking about him and praying for him, so why doesn't he go back there sometime? I don't really relate to this song as much as others but I still love it because Miranda shows off her voice in this song and the music is just as awesome. "You say you're living on the edge, but I think you're hanging from the ledge, too scared to hold the hand that wants to help you up."
3. Greyhound Bound for Nowhere- 8/10 - I've only heard the live version as I just bought the CD today online, but it's kind of slow and there aren't a lot of lyrics in this song I relate to. But it's a great song. What I get from it is that she was seeing a man who was already taken but although they wanted to be with each other, she wasn't going to be the "other woman" so she ran away. "I'm gonna find someplace I can ease my mind and try to heal my wounded pride"
4. New Strings- 8/10 - I've never actually heard this song as I just bought the CD online today and didn't download it before, but I've read the lyrics and I have to say, if the music and way Ran sings it are like the others, this could be a 10/10 song. The lyrics are pretty good. Some you may not be able to relate to, but others are very easy to relate to. I think it's about her leaving home to pursue her music career, and people wishing she'd stay but she had to do it. "And he smiled inside and I pretended that I didn't notice a little tear that fell when I said I was going"
5. I Can't Be Bothered- 9/10 - The only reason this song loses a point is because I'm always trying to sing it, but there's one note I always miss. It's not that I can't hit it, but Miranda does a little jump that I don't try fast enough so by the time I get it, she's on to the next word. I think it's one of the faster songs on this CD. It's got decent lyrics. We've seen better from Lambert, but it's still got good lyrics. In my opinion, one of the better songs on the CD. Very catchy. "I used to think if missed hard enough you'd come back for sure. But I can't be bothered now to miss you anymore."
6. Bring Me Down- 10/10 - This is one of my favorite Miranda Lambert songs. The lyrics are so amazing. Anyone who has ever had a broken heart can relate to it. The music is kind of a medium speed with Lambert's amazing voice shining through with moving notes and just being powerful to give the song more meaning. If you listen to one song on this CD, I'd recommend it be this one or There's A Wall. "You can look me in the eye and break my heart." "If you would only stay gone, maybe I could move on."
7. Me and Charlie Talking- 8/10 - Given I'm not a natural country fan, at first this song was too country for me, but I loved the majority of the lyrics. After I listened to it a couple times, I fell in love with it. "You can start a love with good intentions and you'll look up and it's gone."
8. I Wanna Die- 9/10 - "If you're handing out misery, I'll be the first in line. If you're the death of me darlin' I wanna die." Probably everyone at some point in their life will like someone enough to think that or something along those lines. Awesome music behind Miranda's once again awesome voice.
9. Love Is Looking for You- 9/10 - A song about someone who has been trying to find themself, but has been through their share of pain and is lost, but assuring them love is coming and, what I get out of that is, things will be okay. The lyrics to this song are amazing. Some might consider them a little weak, but in my opinion they're as some of the better lyrics on this CD. Probably my #4 or #5 song on this CD. "So you're looking for your skin that you never did fit in. You can't hide when you're turned inside out."
10. Mama, I'm Alright- 9/10 - This is one of my other favorite Miranda Lambert songs. The chorus can be kind of confusing, and if you're not a "southern" person (whether you're from the south or just a true country fan) you might not really like most of the chorus. However, I'm from New York and I understand it and it doesn't make me love the song any less. It's mostly about how she chose her own path (music career) instead of doing something else and she's learned much from it and this song is like her telling her mom she's okay and not to worry. "Now don't you cry another night about me. In this city I've got angels all around me" "My step is sure and I know my name. I'm strong just like you prayed I'd be."
11. There's a Wall- 10/10- Another one of my favorite songs. I could listen to this song all day. A good song to relate to if you're in some sort of relationship where you think it'd be better to end, or knock down the walls between the two of you, but the walls won't come down and you won't leave. The way Miranda sings this really adds more emotion to it as well. There's a lot of moving notes that I believe make the song more likeable. Once again, the lyrics are just awesome. There's at least one line in this song that someone should be able to relate to. "We're reacing to the bottom and I can't find the end."
12. Love Your Memory- A song about, I believe, having a broken heart from trying to make a relationship work that couldn't, especially since the person wanted to change her and she wasn't going to become something she wasn't. A slow song, probably one of the slowest, if not, then THE slowest song on this CD. It's got awesome lyrics and I'd recommend this song to everyone too, even if they didn't like country music. Of course without a voice like Ran's, it might not have been as good. "I don't want to see you or feel you. I don't want to look into your eyes. I don't want to touch you or miss you. I just want to love your memory tonight"
Amazing CD. I look forward to more CDs from Miranda Lambert.
Kerosene PosterIn January 2003, Miranda placed first in the Texas auditions for the series Nashville Star, and moved to Nashville to appear on the show. She finished third but ultimately signed with Sony Music, one of the show's sponsors. "Me and Charlie Talking" is the first single off Miranda's new CD. Columbia. 2005. Serious artists don't usually get discovered via TV talent shows, but this 21-year-old former Nashville Star finalist has become an important songwriter and vocalist with her debut album, Kerosene, which immediately sprang to the top of the country charts. Overall, it's a set of amiable country pop, but the title track and "What About Georgia?," which open the disc, are rock songs at heart--driven by a hard-smacked snare drum and layers of guitar. But what's really at the core of these excellent performances is Lambert's romantic lyrics and versatile singing. When she's playing the angry lover in "Kerosene," she's loaded with punky attitude. When she's brokenhearted and moving on in "New Strings," her soft, delicate tones and gentle phrasing perfectly capture a rich blend of sadness and hope. There's even a bit of Dolly Parton's sweet vibrato and rustic charm in "Me and Charlie Talking," a nostalgic contemplation on love and life's simple virtues. Lambert authored or co-penned 11 of Kerosene's dozen tunes, but what she's really written is the first chapter in what may be a long, impressive career. --Ted Drozdowski
