Free Music Review: The Greatest Comedy Album of All Time!
Hit: 5 Stars

A few years ago, just after I got XM radio, I started to listen to the comedy channel. Over the next several weeks, I noticed that this one particular comic's bits were absolutely brilliant. I didn't know the guy's name, so I called him "The Beatnik Comic" based on his laid back delivery and the string bass music playing in the background of some of the bits. Then one day I hear the follwoing bits from "The Beatnik Comic":

"Mr. Pibb is a [BS] replica of Dr. Pepper because the dude didn't even get his degree. " Great.

"I went to a doctor, all he did was suck my neck. Don't go see Dr. Acula." I laughed so hard I almost crashed my car. I knew right then I had to find out the name of this guy. I look on the display and find out his name - Mitch Hedberg.

I quickly go online to see if this guy has a website. He does. And on the front page is a huge announcement stating that Mitch passed away the day before. Needless to say I was shocked and really upset. I ran right out and bought both Mitch All Together and Strategic Grill Locations.

As I said, Mitch All Together is the greatest comedy album of all time. Mitch delivers the jokes so fast and furiously that you won't know what hit you. The jokes are mostly one or two liners that are surreal and often, just plain bizarre (and I mean that as a compliment) in nature. You'll hear jokes about vending machines selling vending machines and why ducks love Subway (the sandwich chain).

The CD is only 45 minutes, but it contains at least four hours worth of brilliant jokes. While his jokes were brilliant on S.T.G., his delivery during that early performance was still a bit tentative and slow. Mitch had the delivery mastered by the time Mitch All Together was released. This CD also contains a DVD of a 1999 Comedy Central Mitch performance which contains many of the jokes found on S.T.G., so it's like getting two comedy albums for the price of one.

As I said, I think this is the greatest comedy album of all time. This CD has been in my car for well over a year and I still haven't tired of it. It is beyond brilliant. Go get it.

Free Music Review: These Are the CD Jokes for the Duframes
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm going to make an attempt at being awfully succinct here, but Mitch Hedberg was singlehandedly responsible for getting back into stand up comedy from a fan perspective. I guess I was oversaturated with Comedy Central and had walked away, then some random stoner I went to school with at NC State hooked me up with a bootlegged CD of "Strategic Grill Locations" about three years ago. (Oops I just admitted to indirect piracy, but until I saw a reissued copy in a store a few weeks ago, I didn't know there was another way to hear it, other than with my ears.)

Fact is, "Mitch All Together" is another triumph for the nonchalant comic who's style feels a little Steven Wrightish, but who paints quite a bit more of a positive picture. The jokes are well-crafted, quick, and painless, and the DVD is great, especially if you haven't seen or heard the Comedy Central Presents from a few years ago already... but the unedited version is a real classic. I wonder what Mitch paid the audience (cough) to sit on their hands, because the improv and the honesty made it highly entertaining.

I'm going to say if you haven't heard Mitch yet, try and get "Strategic Grill Locations" because it has twice as much material and it's most of the original stuff who made him a household name around Stipticville, Pennsylvania. Let's not forget Chuck either.

Nah all kidding aside Mitch is a genius and whatever you can get a hold of to listen to, do your best to do so. The first is always the best if you're a big fan, but either of them are absolute gems. The only thing I sometimes wish is that I was some kind, ANY kind, of drug addict so I could laugh harder at some of the stuff, but it's talent, and it's rare... because it's actually original. Thanks to Mitch I've discovered Gaffigan, Cook, Swanson, Black, more of Attell's stuff... but nothing's like Mitch, his stuff is timeless because it's so darn literal. Go pick this piece up and get your Hed on straight. Okay that was a lame as lame gets kind of ending, how about this... pick this piece up and use it to block a fire exit.

Free Music Review: One of Comedy's Greats
Hit: 5 Stars

Of all the comedians I've ever heard in my life, Mitch Hedberg is definitely on the top with his witty, observational humor and relaxed delivery. While some may find it hard to get accustomed to his lazy style and overuse of curse words, the jokes themselves overpower the cursing and eventually, you start to not notice them and it seems that the jokes just wouldn't be the same without the expletives. It's part of what makes him the unique comedian he is; not the cursing, mind you, but the way he uses it and how it's not really what makes his jokes funny; there's no frills or bull here, just 100% genuinely amusing, observational comedy in the vein of Jerry Seinfeld and Steven Wright (hell, this guy gives Steven Wright, the undisputed master of observational humor, a run for his money). With annoying comedians like Dane Cook ruling the charts, it's good to see a much greater comedian making a name for himself.

The best improvement on here over the last CD is that Mitch sounds infinitely more relaxed than he did on the last one (which seemed almost impossible, because he sounded pretty calm on the first, too) and he makes fewer mistakes (well, mistakes being times when he doesn't consider his joke funny and comments on that fact) and the album flows much better, with the tracks being seamlessly integrated into the next. The album is also about six minutes shorter than the last, but he seems to get more in this time around, and at no point does the album seem to drag on (the first few minutes of the previous one seem much longer because of the jokes about recording a CD that get somewhat repetitive).

The bottom line: if you're disgruntled at the disgusting, unfunny comedy that plagues Comedy Central and various other stations, pick this album up. Plus, in addition to the CD, you get a DVD full of his best performances for the price of a single CD.

Free Music Review: Refreshingly different comedy. Too bad he isn't around anymore.
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a long time collector of comedy recordings, and found out about Mitch Hedberg through a flyer for "Mitch All Together" included inside another comedy CD. Trust me, I'm not a prude, nor am I afraid to listen to comedians who want to challenge my beliefs. But in a world of comedy that's over filled with hacks and wanna-be philosopher/politician types, this CD was refreshingly different to hear.

This isn't a comedian who does celebrity impersonations, rants about the differences between men and women, shares anecdotes about airplane rides, nor is he the type who rejects all wit and laughter for the sole sake of shock value, or claims to have all the solutions for a better world. Just straight-forward comedy with a surreal and unique edge to it.

If I could compare Hedberg to somebody else, Steven Wright comes to mind, in that they both have acts primarily made up of surreal one-liners. The character and execution are part of the humor, but the material can still stand on its own. Hedberg's stage character and execution style are certainly different than Wright though, as Hedberg rather comes off as more of a stoner/beatnik type. At the same time, it's far from anti-intellectual. Sometimes it even gets a little geeky, and in a good way.

Most of the samples here don't give a great representation of the album, but if you hear them you'll get the general idea. The bonus DVD includes two different performances from Comedy Central, one short and one long. It's too bad Mitch only left us with 2 albums total!

Free Music Review: RIP MITCH!!
Hit: 5 Stars

It was just about 2 months ago when I was listening to Howard Stern one morning and there was the familiar voice of Mitch. I had seen Mitch's comedy special on Comedy Central a long time ago and it was one of the funnier routines. Most of the time the comics that are showcased on Comedy Central are never as laugh out loud funny like Mitch was. I was truly confused when I heard that he had died. I thought it was a joke at first, but as that day went on it became more clear that it was true. I felt bad thinking that someone who was as nice as Mitch would ever pull a prank like that. Mitch seemed like a really good guy and it is a shame that he is gone. I can remember after listening to Mitch on Stern saying to myself that I just had to see him the next time he was in the area. Unfortunately, I will never get that chance to see him in person but now I am extremely grateful for this CD/DVD combo. I couldn't do anything else before watching the DVD and listening to the CD. The CD is nonstop hilarity and the DVD is great because you can see the laid-back Mitch perform. The comedy material on the CD is a lot funnier than the DVD because you can tell that the audience on the CD are familiar with who he is and his comic genius. Most of the audience on the DVD don't really have an idea who he is and it takes awhile for them to warm up. All in all, its Mitch Hedberg in all of his greatness and its a great combo for the price. Mitch was one of my favorite comics and I wish I had the chance to see him perform but you just never know.
