As a point, I play this album for anyone who hasn't heard it. So far, every last one of those anyones has loved it. I wouldn't presume that Mitch's comedic style is for everybody, but I'd be shocked to meet someone who could sit stone-faced listening to Mitch say something like "I saw a wino eating grapes. It's like, Dude, you have to wait." In fact, I played the CD for my cousin while we were driving in his Jeep -- I had to take it out because he was laughing so hard that he was swerving off the road.
The first time I listened to Hedberg, a friend of mine loaned me Strategic Grill Locations for a road trip. Now that I've seen how other people react to his comedy (in person, and in the unedited Comedy Central special), my initial reaction makes so much more sense than it did then. I definitely had the "what the fu#k's up with this guy" vibe for about the first quarter of the album. So did the friend I was driving with. Then before I knew it, I had tears rolling down my cheeks.
I'd recommend Mitch Hedberg to anyone who likes comedy. There is nothing in here other than a little foul language to offend anyone -- well, unless you're watching the DVD and know anyone like I do who is missing fingers or a hand (you other fans know what I'm talking about). If you've actually read all of this review, you've already wasted time that could have been used laughing. Get off your ass!

Also, can someone out there tell me why I never catch people like Mitch or David Cross in Michigan?

Free Music Review: Great Comedy, Deceptive DVD
Hit: 5 Stars

I just bought the CD, and I really like Mitch's comedy. This CD is, in my opinion better than "Strategic Grill Locations," where he oftentimes makes kind of bad jokes and then calls himself on it. His material and delivery are much stronger on this album, and he's gotten a bit more clever too.

Be warned though, his comedy isn't for everyone. However, if you are (or used to be, or enjoy a friend who is) a pothead, you might like his style a little more. He's kind of like a laid back funny hippy. Sometimes the jokes are intelligent, but he oftentimes just plays on words, which in itself is clever, but not "intellectual comedy" that is sometimes popular.

He does have his own style, which could turn some people off, but I would think that those people are they type that would think that he really tries to be like his comedic character in real life.

About the DVD, it is not footage from the CD, but from his comedy central special instead. It actually has a lot (but not all of) the material from Strategic Grill locations. It has the *complete*, unedited version of his comedy central special, which has some jokes that I have never heard, also some tags on old jokes that I never heard (the Ritz cracker tags are really good, some are not on Strategic Grill Locations).

Anyway, really good, although I wish they had footage from the same album too. Basically, if you like the sound samples, you will love the CD and DVD.

Free Music Review: Fantastic - fresh, new, mind-exercising, HILLARIOUS stuff!
Hit: 5 Stars

And you get a ton of material. The CD, which I didn't listen to for a long time because I figured it would be the audio-only version of the DVD, has entirely different, and side-splittingly funny material. I was literally in tears and out of breath listening to the last 5 tracks.

If there's one problem with this set, it's the lack of liner notes or anything explaining what's going on with the CD and the DVD. You find multiple versions of the same stuff (cut and uncut, separate shows vs. one long "show") on the DVD. You don't know what's duplicative or whatever. Hard to figure out what you need to do to just hear all the material (preferably "uncut").

Anyways, awesome job Mitch. We saw you as an opening act in Madison for the Lewis Black / Dave Attell (both of which we'e seen separately previously and enjoyed very much) tour and I sat there looking at my wife, laughing, and saying "who is this guy? he's kinda odd, quirky, but very cool, and f**king hillarious"? I think Mitch's style makes it very hard to appreciate him in small chunks. It's when he gets in a rhythm and just keeps flowing that your sides start to ache, something tough to do when you're just out there to warm up a crowd who doesn't even know who you are (but was still enough for me to follow up on looking for his stuff).

I was so glad to find the first CD and now this CD/DVD combo. Awesome job, can't wait to get more of you, wish you all the success you deserve.

Free Music Review: Mitch is hilarious and sweet
Hit: 5 Stars

Mitch is so freakin' hilarious, you'll laugh until you cry. He has a really unique talent for spinning normal, common observations and turning them into something so unusual, you can't help but laugh. But it's not even just his jokes - if anyone else did these same jokes, they wouldn't get the same laughs. It's all in the delivery. Mitch has a very odd cadence to his speech and it adds to the hilarity. I love his performances as well; he's very sweet, down to earth, self-effacing, and shy. Wearing sunglasses so he doesn't have to look at the crowd. That's cute! I don't have a favorite joke of all time but I have several ones that crack me up every time I hear them: "I went to a dry cleaners at 3am and there was a sign: Sorry, we're closed. Hey. You don't have to be sorry man. It's 3 am and you're a dry cleaner. It would be ridiculous of me to expect you to be open." And the doughnut one... "I went to buy a doughnut and they gave me a receipt for the doughnut. I don't need a receipt for the doughnut, I'll give you money and you give me the doughnut, end of transaction. We don't need to bring paper into this. It's not like I'll ever need to prove that I bought a doughnut. Like to some skeptical friend - don't even act like I didn't buy that doughnut. I have the documentation right here. Oh wait, it's at home. In my file. Under D. For doughnuts."
