Free Music Notes for Best of the Monkees

Free Music Review: Great Cd
Hit: 4 Stars

K, Yep i think this is a wonderful cd and it is put together well, lots of nice pictures in the booklet, And not to mention the neat little cover over the case. It has all the great monkees songs like I'm a Believer, Steppin stone, and Pleasant valley sunday i think its a better buy then the first greastest hits but the only real reason i bought it was because i am a obesses monkees fan who has to have every monkees item. but really folks its great. and to you monkee dissers buy this cd or borrow it from somone listen to it a few times and your life will never be the same.

Free Music Review: Great value
Hit: 4 Stars

A nice 25 song selection from a much maligned group. These guys put out many great songs, and most are on this CD I would rather have had Nilsson's "Cuddly Toy" instead of the "Porpoise Song" from their failed movie, but all the hits are here, the "B" sides, and some bonuses from their albums. The "bonus" karaoke makes no sense, most people who sing along do it to the originals anyway, and they probably know the lyrics by now. A great CD for the price if you need to replace your vinyl, and a great introduction to the group for others.

Free Music Review: a lot of good songs, but the sound quality suffers
Hit: 3 Stars

To those who may have read my previous, more positive, review for this CD and are puzzled by my turnaround, I have some explaining to do. A lot of other reviewers have complained about the sound quality of this CD. It's weird, but for years, I never noticed most of the things that they were complaining about. When I recently listened to this CD (after I had read the other reviews and had written my previous one), I could see what those people meant, at least in some cases. Maybe I hadn't listened to the CD closely enough until then (I do have a tendency to daydream or nod off while "listening" to my music), or maybe those people's complaints have influenced how I hear the CD. Maybe it was both. Anyway, I now agree that the sound quality on this CD does suffer. The volume level of the CD is inconsistent; more so than I used to think. Some of the tracks, especially "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Words," do indeed sound as though they have been copied off of a cassette. Other tracks, like "Valleri" and "Porpoise Song," really do sound shrill and/or distorted. "Daydream Believer" sounds good, but for some reason is a bit loud; in fact, if you turn up the volume for the very-quiet tracks "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Words," and don't turn the volume back down after those songs, "Daydream Believer" (which comes after those songs) will blast you out of the room (or your car, or wherever you are when you're listening)! This CD has a lot of good songs on it, and I won't say that no one should buy it, but the sound quality is indeed lacking, at least compared to most other Monkees compilations. All of the other Monkees CDs released by Rhino, or at least all of the ones that I've bought, have much better, usually great, sound quality; this one is unexplainable, at least to me.

Free Music Review: Re "Pleasant Valley Sunday"
Hit: 3 Stars

I suppose this compilation omits the album version of "Pleasant Valley" and includes the hideously off-key single version. Rhino also did us the service of yanking the album version from their reissue of the "original" "Capricorn Pisces" album, substituting said atrocious single version. Thank you ever so much, Rhino.
Does anyone know where one can find the album version of "Pleasant Valley Sunday" on CD?
