Free Music Review: Lost gem, just like the film.

It seems that scarcely anyone has seen the Monkees' brilliant psychedelic screen romp "Head", and most of the people who think that the Monkees only sang songs like "I'm A Believer" have never heard this album. It's a shame, because it's a brilliant achievement that (even more so than "Headquarters" or "Pisces, Aquarius") shows that the boys made for TV could be as brilliant as the boys from Liverpool.
Featuring some of the undisputed best numbers the Monkees ever created, every rock fan owes it to themselves to own "Head". If you've only heard the bubble gum early tracks, "Porpoise Song" alone should knock you off of your feet. A dreamy psychedelic number, sung by Dolenz and featuring notable Jones background work, rare is the music fan who can deny the appeal of this tune upon hearing it. This is the first true track on the album, after the "Opening Ceremony", and it should hook you for a listen.
There are only 6 true songs on this album, interspersed with little chants (The "Ditty Diego War Chant" is a hilarious evisceration of the popular "Theme From The Monkees", penned by Jack Nicholson, the film's co-producer), orchestrated bits and sound samples from the film. It's a foray into the avant garde, with heavy Frank Zappa influences. (Dig Frank and his talking cow in the film!) Despite having so few real bread and butter songs, there is not a sub-par or even close to sub-par track to be found.
Nesmith's "Circle Sky" is a rocking number with what may seem to be largely nonsensical lyrics, but it is most certainly a protest song to the Vietnam war. I highly recommend seeing the film, you will understand the "What's that spell? WAR!" lead in, and the live footage of the boys performing this song in the film is laced with scenes of the war, common to news footage of the day. The infamous execution of a young vietnamese man is seen here. The live version of the song is included as a bonus track on this release and it's actually superior to the studio version, and the lyrics are clearer.
Next up is Peter Tork's "Can You Dig It", though the film version of the song is voiced by Micky Dolenz. If you get the feeling of a desert setting and belly dancing girls when hearing this song, you're right on the money. Once again, see the film for the trippy accompaniment to this excellent song. A version of the song with vocals by Tork is included on the cd as well.
Next track is Carole King's "As We Go Along", a comforting acoustic number from one of the (few) calm moments of the film. Dolenz delivers this one in his trademark soothing, wistful voice, switching from low intoning to higher pleading. A nice track to be smack-dab in the middle of the album, also features a nice fade-out of flutes and guitar.
Next up is the Harry Nilsson penned "Daddy's Song" which features some of Jones' best vocal work with the group, as this song really fits in with Jones' style of Vaudevillian stage fare. Check out the film for a trippy dance number, as Jones sports one outfit very similar to something Austin Powers would wear! There is an alternate take of this song with Mike Nesmith vocals included on the cd.
Next up, a serious contender for finest track on the album, Peter Tork's "Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again?", a hard rocking, late 60's psychedelic number, featuring killer guitar riffs and bass work. Tork delivers great vocal work, and this is most definitely a song that you could play for someone and they would have no idea that they were listening to a Monkees song. A true testament to the group's still unappreciated genius. This song accompanies an extremely colorful rave-up scene in the film.
Other bonus tracks included on the album are the "Happy Birthday To You" number that follows "Long Title...", an alternate version of the "Ditty Diego War Chant", and a Head radio spot.
If I haven't stressed it enough yet...this is a genius album. If you want to know more about the Monkees, buy it. If you're simply a rock fan (particularly of 60's rock, and who isn't?), buy it. This is a brilliant album that has a cult following 36 years after its release, but it has yet to be fully recognized for the brilliant work it contains.
