Free Music Notes for Music BoxFree Music Review: Hey, hey.... Hit: 4 Stars
This is a great box set-enough said. The one and only problem I encountered was the packaging. The jewel cases are not glued very well at all, and will fall out when you attempt to take the Cd's out. Otherwise, I found everything else from artwork to song selection to be superior. Die hard Monkees fans will note the inclusion of some tracks from the "Missing Links" collections. My favorite rarity is the alternate version of Micky Dolenz'"Mommy & Daddy".
Free Music Review: Zoo Monkeys Hit: 4 Stars
This is an excellent boxed set, tho I was more than a little disappointed at the omission of the rare zoo version of "Red Butt, Flung Doo," in favor of the more commercial "Red Balls, Flung Poo." Otherwise a great box, well worth the hefty price tag.
Free Music Review: I Want To Be Free of endless redundant Monkee compilations Hit: 3 Stars
On the surface, this box set appears to be an improvement over Listen To The Band. The booklet is far better, with color photos, extensive liner notes. The sound quality is a vast improvement. There is real separation in the stereo mixes. They have texture. Rhino did the group a tremendous credit by taking over the remastering. And of course...Bill Inglot! Anything his name is on has to be top quality.But...if one checks out the song selection, one is disappointed. First, contrary to a reviewer below, the version of Mommy and Daddy is not the alternate version. That one appeared on Anthology with a restored intro. Here one gets the inferior second version with the toned down lyrics. So, one has to own both Anthology and this to get both versions (and have 49 dupes). Also, why was Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere dropped? This is the second 1986 reunion track that appeared on the Arista package Then & Now...Where is it available, since the Listen To The Band Box is deleted. Second, the packaging does fall apart. My clear plastic trays are coming apart and I've only had this for less than a week. So, a five star box gets a three star rating. Find the 1991 box Listen To The Band. The sound quality may be slightly inferior, but the song selection is slightly better.
Free Music Review: Where's "Laugh"? Hit: 3 Stars
Incredible compilation. But minus one of my fave songs! Why was "Laugh" (side 2, track 5 of the original vinyl More of the Monkees lp -- the tune that preceded I'm a Believer) excluded?
Free Music Review: How disappointing! Hit: 2 Stars
I was all psyched to buy this set when I heard about it on the radio. I quailed a bit at the price because $15 per CD seems a bit steep, but "Hey," I said, "there's an awful lot of music on here." All the Monkees music together in one place, they said. But is it true?I viewed the track list and my absolute favorite Monkees song of all time is nowhere to be found. Sure, some great ones like Auntie Griselda and others you don't hear much, even on oldies stations, were there, but not Zilch. I mean, come on! Early Monkees music without Bob Dobalena? Just won't happen. I'll wait until I find it discounted somewhere or used or something. Can't see spending 60 bucks for Monkees music and not getting Zilch!
