Free Music Notes for Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. (Deluxe Edition, 2CD)Free Music Review: As the years go by, people changing every day. Hit: 5 Stars
This is generally considered to be the Monkees best album, although some would give that honor to Headquarters, which has the distinction of having the majority of the instruments played by the Monkees themselves. The Monkees didn't contribute as much instrumentally to this album, although Tork and Nesmith did play on most of the tracks, with Dolenz and Jones lending a hand to several of them. As for the songs, there are several great ones here, with no real bad ones. Heck, I like 'em all! This "deluxe edition" features both the mono and stereo versions of the album, with different bonus track added to each album. With the exception of "Goin' Down", "Riu Chiu" and a brief "Special Announcement", the bonus track are alternate mixes of songs from the album. Whether you need to have both the mono and stereo albums and several alternate mixes probably depends on how much you like the Monkees. F.Y.I., here is how the alternate mixes differ from the "regular" versions:
Disc 1
"Salesman" - has monologue at the end, runs half a minute longer
"She Hangs Out" - no horns, runs half a minute longer
"Love Is Only Sleeping" - different vocals
"What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?" - different vocals, runs a few seconds longer
"Star Collector" - no Moog synthesizer, runs half a minute longer
Disc 2
"Salesman" - has monologue at the end, fades out earlier than the alternate mix on disc 1
"Cuddly Toy" - echoing effect at the end goes on about half a minute longer
"The Door Into Summer" - different vocals
"Daily Nightly" - no Moog synthesizer
"Star Collector" - different Moog synthesizer part, runs half a minute longer
Free Music Review: I wanted to write a nasty review, but it's really superb Hit: 5 Stars
This deluxe edition of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd, is so nicely done (much like the first three in this series), I honestly couldn't write anything nasty. It's been presented with love and care.
The sound quality is great in both mono & stereo. It's very similar in sound quality to the Beatles Capitol Records releases that just came out recently. The bonus material is entertaining, as well as strong, I also loved some of the out-takes I'd never heard before. The booklet is also really good, with lots of rare photos and the in depth story of the making of this album.
The overall packaging is very classy. It makes me hope that The Beatles get this kind of treatment through Apple records, or my favorite band, Deep Purple get this sort of stunning re-packaging from Rhino.
I grew up on the mono versions of the Monkees albums, all the way up to their fifth album "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees" in April 1968, so I was really thrilled to see that mono finally made it to CD. I've always thought that the mono mixes of this album were better overall, giving an overall impression of a heavier rock band sound with added reverb. As for the stereo mastering, it's beautiful. Overall, they've done a wonderful job on these deluxe discs. Let's hope the next two albums (released in mono & stereo) get this same kind of royal treatment.
Sure they seem to be milking the Monkee-cow, but when it's this strong, milk it baby. Next up, The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees?
Free Music Review: My favorite Monkee's album Hit: 5 Stars
This album had the hits "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Words", but my favorite tracks were some of Mickey Dolenz' work. "Daily Nightly" and "Goin' Down" are absolutely fabulously underrated sixties staple tracks. They definitely fit in with the San Francisco sound of the era.
The track "Salesman" starts off this album just like The Beatles album started with "Taxman", (see the similarity of concept here?), and "Love is Only Sleeping" sounds like a flattering of The Beatles "I'm Only Sleeping." Could their extended "Star Collector" track be homage to "Tomorrow Never Knows" with its psychedelic influence? There are several tracks here that you can't help but recognize that they were competing with (as well as complimenting) the sounds of the Beatles. And I'm OK with that.
Apart from their goofy "Peter Percival Patterson's Pet Pig Porky", I feel that this is what The Monkees were all about, even though they were a fabricated band to create a Saturday Morning TV show. They were very talented and are excellent songwriters. I miss that time in my life when we would watch their show and then meet at the park and talk about it.
Free Music Review: Here They Come..Better Then EVER!! Hit: 5 Stars
I barely remembered their TV show when it first came in 1966, I was only four at the time, then I've became a HUGE fan of The Monkees since 1975 (after I started watching there shows on syndicated channels). None of there LP's existed at the time. Then Arista (bless them) released their Greatest Hits collection in 1976. A few years later, imported LP's from Japan started to come thru my local record shop. I bought their Debut thru Birds, Bees & Monkees. The sound was good, but their was not enough base sound to it. Then...1994, Rhino gave The Monkees the respect they deserve, releasing ALL their albums on CD, each in a nice special casing, liner notes AND unissued bonus tracks. Too Bad The Beatles didn't get this treatment( way over due ). In 2006 and 2007, Rhino did it again EVEN BETTER!! I have the first (and best) four of their Deluxe Editions-more bonus tracks, a lot more liner notes, PLUS the Sound Quality of both Mono & Stereo are superior to anything released before. I only hope the will do the same with the five original remaining CD's "The Birds, The Bees and The Monkees" thru "Changes". We Can Only Hope...
Free Music Review: Finally Remastered With A Decent Master Tape Hit: 5 Stars
Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. (PACJ) has suffered from mediocre sound on various tracks since the first CDs were issued in the 1980's. The problem was the lack of a first generation master tape.
While some of the PACJ tracks did squeeze out in remastered form (remixed from the multi-track masters), any full release of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., in its original mix, was usually produced from a hodge-podge of sources, including even second generation master copies that were found in Germany.
But several years ago, a first generation stereo master of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. was finally located. This Deluxe edition marks the first release of the full album remastered from that tape. The sound quality is much improved, with distortion, tape hiss, and drop outs greatly reduced.
