Free Music Review: It's a good thing they went back to their roots
Hit: 4 Stars

Because their third record, "Fragments of Freedom" sounded nothing like them. I'm a huge Morcheeba fan, but it's all about Who Can You Trust? and Big Calm (the first two albums). This album sounds a lot like Big Calm in its variety, they still have the pop elements, but the beats are going back as far as Who Can You Trust, which is a great thing. The album is virtually flawless, save for a few tracks (like "Women Lose Weight.")

Sad thing is, though... this is the last recording with Skye Edwards (original Morcheeba singer)... as far as many Morcheeba fans are concerned, and I couldn't agree more:

Morcheeba R.I.P. 1996-2004.

Pick up Skye's solo album... clearly, she is why Morcheeba was so good.

Free Music Review: great cd
Hit: 4 Stars

Every time I go to Europe, I try to get local music and bring it back to the US just so I can have a bit of a different musical flavor in my life. I happened to be watching MTV in Spain and saw one of their videos, and while at the music store looking for Spanish music, I picked up a copy of this cd as well. I had never heard of them before and I didnt know what to expect, but it was a cd prominently displayed in the window and I figured it was worth a shot. I put it in my CD player in my car and it is a very refreshing cd filled with a bit of relaxing, yet energetic songs. I dont know really what kind of genre this music would be, but it is deffinitely worth a listen.

Free Music Review: Very strong. Not dissapointing.
Hit: 4 Stars

The hooks on most of the songs may not be as obvious, or the overall energy as high, but this CD is every bit as compelling as Morcheebas' break-though album, Big Calm. It took a few more listenings for this one to really bite, but I'm glad I made the effort. All the songs range from good to excellent and span a nice range of styles (if not tempos). That includes the satirical number by Slick Rick (which has one heck of a catchy chorus) and is self effacing enough to be taken for what it is, A BIT OF FUN! If you really liked Big Calm but are wavering due the mixed reviews, I would just say go for it.

Free Music Review: Blue on purpose.
Hit: 4 Stars

I loved Big Calm; Charango is better. "Undress Me Now" is a transcendent accomplishment for this already progressive album and highlights what this group is capable of. Smooth soulful pop that would have challenged Dusty herself delivered with the sultry tones any Julie London fan can appreciate. Other acts have built entire careers around weaker songs, and this group seems to be growing stronger. I am not sure if the trip-hop label should still be lingering around the band with the scope and risks they exhibit in this collection of material, but who cares with results like this?

Free Music Review: something old, something new
Hit: 4 Stars

while i appreciate the return to the more mellow, chill tunes...the songs that "feature" guest voices kind of fail to impress. i have been a huge Morcheeba fan since day one and thought their first two albums were simply brilliant. Fragments of Freedom took a while to get used to because some of the songs sounded, dare i say, happy? this newest offering takes a step back (in a good way) and loses the funky pop feel, but a few of the grooves just sound incomplete. perhaps a remix album is in order?
