Free Music Review: Downhill spiral
Hit: 3 Stars

I have been an avid fan of Morcheeba for quite a while now, and when I'd heard they'd made another attempt, I was quite excited. But this CD lacks the beauty and tranquility of "Big Calm" and is far removed from my favorite album of theirs, "Who can you trust." I saw them in Austin a few years back, and they were amazing in concert.. you could just feel the calm ooze its way around the room. But Charango lacked the creativity and soulfulness of "Calm" and "Who" and was a little too poppy for my tastes. There is one great song on here, entitled "Slow down", and another, "aqualung" is okay, but I really didn't care much for the rest of the album. There is one song on the album entitled "Women lose weight" that you can't hear on amazon, but is pretty offensive.. I realize it was a joke, but it is the story of a guy who's wife gets chubby after a few kids, and he really wants to get with his secretary, but he's gotta get rid of wifey first.. so he kills her... forces her over the median of the freeway, and then he goes to jail.. so the moral of the story is "women lose weight" so your hubby doesn't have to kill you and then go to jail. It's truly bizarre.. and I really didn't like it musically since the vocals were done by "Slick Rick" who essentially talks (like in rap) and tells the story over the back drop music. I was expecting a CD packed with Sky's voice, and instead I get what sounds like Morcheeba sometimes, but is mostly disappointing.

Free Music Review: Fairly good, uneven, some weird musical decisions
Hit: 3 Stars

There is some choice 'cheeba here, particularly the first three tunes and "Public displays of Affection," which are what get this 3 stars from me. Unfortunately, Morcheeba made the decision to bring in several ringers, whose results take this exemplary trip-hop band very far away from from its best form. Really, does a song like "What New York Couples Fight About" fit into this musical context? It's way too theatrical. Embarrassing to have on the auto CD player. No groove, and an enervated Bryan Ferry wannabe lead vocalist usurping Sky's seat. Probably the worst offender is "Women Lose Weight" which actually makes me laugh through the insouciance of Slick Rick, but is really not PC at all. ;)
This CD shows little staying power, and is not even close to Big Calm in consistency. I hope Morcheeba cuts back on the guest vocalist habit, because in all cases it's been tried, the experiment's a failure.

Free Music Review: Good, semi-return to form
Hit: 3 Stars

After Fragments of Freedom, they probably realized they weren't very good pop songwriters. So, here we have a sort of return to form. There is definitely some pop flavored material here but not as all out blatantly as FoF. And besides, the material is strong enough to hold up. Two appearnces from Pacewon was unnecessary but thankfully they are brief and the Slick Rick appearance more than makes up for Pacewon's mediocrity. Good record, but not great. I'm still waiting for Big Calm II.

Free Music Review: A good attempt. Should have been an EP.
Hit: 3 Stars

Overall I'm not disappointed in this CD. I bought it back in August of 02 and put it aside to listen to the Vines and White Stripes. I have to say, this cd has grown on me, I'm skipping less tracks and it has found a place in my car. "way beyond" is my favorite song on the cd. It has a smooth lounge kinda vibe to it and Skye's voice is as soothing and placid as ever. Great Cd if you are already a fan, if not start with Big Calm.
