Free Music Review: From the Soul of Morocco - Easy to Embrace

Moroccan Spirit sits near the top of my favorites of world music. The CD was very listenable right out of the package. Even if Middle Eastern music is not your favorite, you will find this CD very easy to embrace. I liked it from the start, and I enjoy every voyage the music sends me on.
Performed by native Moroccan musicians and recorded in Casablanca, Morocco, this project was organized by German composer Claus "The Brave" Zundel of B-Tribe fame. Zundel scoured the Moroccan countryside over a 5-year period collecting traditional music for this CD. The tapestry of sound he wove is a wonderful musical image of this varied and colorful region of northwestern Africa.
Some have argued that this may not be exactly traditional Moroccan music. That may actually be a plus for those of us who can't appreciate the 'quarter tones' that make much of Middle Eastern music sound out of tune to Western ears. This CD, for me, smooths out the roughness that put much of this genre beyond my liking.
From the Ouds (Middle Eastern lutes) and dumbeks (hand drums) to the Santurs (Middle Eastern hammered dulcimers), this music has an energetic feel, somewhat dark and pensive, but it always puts a smile on my face. Some of the tracks have an electronic foundation and a fair amount of synthesizer, and a few songs would fit in well as part of the world club scene.
This is definitely a keeper, a most enjoyable and palatable Middle Eastern collection (along with what some would call a 'New World' sound).
