Free Music Notes for Ringleader Of The Tormentors (Deluxe Edition CD & DVD)Free Music Review: Classic Morrissey Hit: 5 Stars
I do believe that the bonus tracks on the deluxe edition, consisting of bsides, may be better than the actual album itself, but the whole package is wonderful.
Free Music Review: Viva Morrissey ! Hit: 5 Stars
Great CD.........MOZ is at his very best. WOW !!!! Life is a Pigsty is my favorite track. I highly recommend this CD to all MOZ fans.
Free Music Review: Near-Perfect CD, Skip the DVD Hit: 4 Stars
Why should you care about the latest release from Morrissey? I was asking myself the same question after his ten year absence from the music scene. Then he released "You are the Quarry" a couple of years ago and got my attention. Surprisingly, "YATQ" was a socially and musically relevant piece of art, not the graspings of an 80's has-been one might expect. I couldn't wait to hear what he did next.
Finally we can all hear his latest effort, the near-perfect "Ringleader of the Tormentors." Morrissey combines his lyrical mastery of all things morose with his keen pop sensibilites. I can't think of another artist who could make this work in quite the same way.
My favorite track, "Dear God Please Help Me," revisits his ongoing battle with celibacy with lines like "There are explosive kegs between my legs." The orchestration by film scoring great Ennio Morricone helps to create a dark and moving track. Morrissey has alluded to his struggle with celibacy before (in songs like "I Have Forgiven Jesus" from his last album), but this level of candor is something new. In fact, the lyrical content of the entire album feels less guarded than than his earlier work.
Other standout tracks are "You Have Killed Me," "In the Future When All's Well," "The Father Who Must Be Killed," and "To Me You Are a Work of Art." These tracks deftly mix his signature somber style with clever pop hooks. The only tracks that don't work for me are "Life is a Pigsty" (over seven minutes of meandering) and "At Last I Am Born" (like something from a spaghetti western soundtrack). But hey, ten out of twelve is damn good.
About the DVD, skip it, just order the album-only version. The video content is short and not very interesting. I was hoping for an interview, but all we get is Morrissey lip-synching a couple of tunes. The album deserves five stars, but the lackluster DVD knocks it down to four for me.
Happy listening!
Free Music Review: Ringleader of a New Era Hit: 4 Stars
Ringleader of the Tormentors -Ringleader of a New Era
Pros: Ringleader of the Tormentors doesn't waste any time introducing a substantially new direction for Morrissey. I find the production to be quite dramatic, which really emphasized the fact Morrissey's vocals have noticeably matured. I was at first shocked on how different his voice sounded after years of being absent (prior to his 2004 comeback `Who Put the M in Manchester'). Upon my 1st listen, it was apparent to me that Morrissey was on the verge of an entirely new era in his solo career. My favorite songs from this album are "I will see you in far off places" (which was a very middle-eastern sounding tune with amazing diversity and intrigue) and "Life is a Pigsty". I think Tony Visconti's production on this album tested Morrissey's skills to the max. These songs were like nothing I could have imagined. "Life is a Pigsty" was a song with sharp vocal imagery and some great dramatic sound effects. I could go on, but let's just say that this is a 12 song CD with at least 11 great songs on it (unlike most artists' albums which contain the one big hit). Ringleader of the Tormentors provides diversity between each track that will keep you hooked for hours at a time.
Cons: The video was a true sleeper. Zzzzz.
Overall: This is a MUST HAVE Album for any fan of Moz's Solo Work!
Free Music Review: Tracks you must have but not his best! Hit: 4 Stars
To tell the truth the only Morrissey albums I have are 'Bona Drag' and 'Vauxhall and I'. The best Morrissey albums ever! I have been a devoted 'Smiths' listener for years (my sisters are even MORE so) and have a couple Morrissey albums. I bought this album coz I was interested to see what Morrissey is like years after the last album I got and also coz I heard it was his best in a few years. Like most albums I listen to, you really have to listen to it a few times before you can say whether you love or hate it, but once I listened to it a few times I have to say that its a very good album (very Morrissey) however I dont think its really up there with 'Bona Drag' and 'Vauxhall'. My absolute favourite tracks tho (if you decide you only want to download a couple lets say) are 'Dear God Please Help Me' and the BEST OF ALL ON THE ALBUM 'Life Is A Pigsty'. To give you an idea of what I like so you can have a bit of a clue what these songs are like are 'Why Dont You Find Out For Yourself', 'Now My Heart Is Full', 'November Spawned A Monster' and most of the 'Bona Drag' album. I think the rating i've given it should actually be 3&1/2 but if you're a true Morrissey fan then you should probably download the tracks i've mentioned from this album. Listen to them a couple times and I believe you wont be disappointed.
