Free Music Notes for Ringleader Of The Tormentors (Deluxe Edition CD & DVD)Free Music Review: Great Album Hit: 4 Stars
This is a great album, every track is gem in my opinion.....but the DVD isn't worth the extra money.
Free Music Review: At Last I Am Bored Hit: 3 Stars
The conventional wisdom is pretty much spot-on with this release: absolutely mediocre. After the immediacy and vitality of Quarry, we get this halfhearted batch of a dozen songs possessing little of the charm we associate with Moz. The production doesn't suit his voice (do we need an echo on every vocal track?), and while we're talking about his voice: on this album it is not in top form. He talk-sings through most tracks, and when he does choose to display some range the rancid production makes it seem like he'll need to lie down immediately afterwards. Moz is getting old, but his voice on here accentuates the fact. The sitar on the first track is pedestrian, and the entire song I'll Never Be Anybody's Hero is the worst song i've heard in months.
As far as memorable Greatest-Hits-type songs, only You Have Killed Me really stands out. The rest recedes into a patient, innocuous, forgettable mass of window-dressing. Of course the fans will fall over themselves cheering this half-hearted effort, i would expect no less. But the reality is that Moz is in a holding pattern: not quite ready to make the next stylistic leap from Quarry, so he trots out this slate of unengaging & rote numbers while hoping the fans hang on for a bit.
As for the "Limited Edition DVD" it is even more eminently forgettable than the material on the album. The video for You Have Killed Me (evoking a 70's Italian TV variety show), a "behind the scenes" video for the same tune (which shows you very little and merely plays the song over top of the boring footage, and a "behind the scenes" look at the video for In The Future When All Is Well (which looks exactly like the previous video, save a costume change and different lighting.)
Moz, as we all know by now, is quite frankly (Mr. Shankly) a money-grubber. No one held a gun to my head to buy this CD (not even George Dubya Bush, who gets a not so subtle beatdown in the liner notes photo), but i am a little disappointed that we, the fans, get an album of filler, with an abbreviated DVD of filler to match. Though i am an inhabitant of Moz's poison city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, i would hope he realizes that his fans would appreciate a touch more effort out of his royal highness from time to time. My sense of kind charity compels me to give this album 3 stars. Next time, Moz, try to earn it.
Free Music Review: Slightly disappointing Hit: 3 Stars
I am disappointed in Morrissey's latest effort, Ringleader...I found myself doing something I hadn't don't since Southpaw Grammar--hitting the scan button to skip ahead in some of the songs to see if they got better in the middle. I don't see any of these being "Morrissey Classics". I am a diehard fan and have been since right before The Queen Is Dead came out. However, I don't swoon over every bit of his music just because it's Morrissey. I buy everything he puts out, singles and all. I found that the B-sides to YATQ's singles were superior to the tracks on ROTT. I wonder why they weren't saved for this CD. The sound quality of the music and Morrissey's voice is great on this CD, I just can't warm up to any of these songs. I think maybe the tracklisting might have influenced my first impression, too. If the tracks are heard for the first time in the reverse order of the tracklisting, you'd hear the best songs first and would want to keep listening.
Perhaps I will warm up to it over time. However, I have never warmed up to Southpaw or Vauxhall (save the singles and b-sides that came from them). I did notice that he's written most of the songs with different people for the first time in a while.
Free Music Review: You have killed me Hit: 3 Stars
Rating out of ten, I would give it a six. Definitely it is not one of the best Morrisey?s albums, but it contains one of his best songs: "You have killed me" is on the same level as "First of the gang to die", "Suedehead", "Everyday is like Sunday", "Bigmouth strikes again"... the kind of songs that you never get tired listening again and again. "You have killed me" alone makes the album worth buying.
Free Music Review: Tormented by the Ringleader Hit: 2 Stars
Ouch! As a huge Morrissey and Smiths fan this one hurts. After all the hype I thought this would be the best yet. WRONG! This Album has maybe 3 or 4 good to average songs. The rest is borderline garbage.
1. "I will see You In Far Off Places" - A noisy number that never comes together.
2. " Dear God Please help me" - A nice slow song that shows off his voice, Morrissey fans might want to kill themselves with this one.
3. "You Have Killed Me" - Good song, I thought it was ok until I heard the rest of the Album, now I really like it.
4. "The Youngest was The Most Loved" - Lame song, lame lyrics, cheesy Children Choir in the background. This is an example of trying to hard.
5. "In The Future all's well" - Really bad song, nothing special here.
6. "The Father Who Must Be Killed" - Finally a good song. It's not great by any means but after listening to the prior two you should like this one.
7. "Life is a Pigsty" - I like this song, classic Morrissey sound, slow that builds up into a nice ending. though over-produced once again, leave out the cheezy thunder and rain next time please.
8. "I'll Never be Anyone's hero" - WTF? This is the worst song I've ever heard by anyone! Throw me off a Train!
9." On The Streets I Ran" - Best song on the CD. That's not saying much but I think This is a quality Morrissey Tune with a good ending, Sorry Pittsburgh.
10. " To Me You are a work Of Art" This song had so much potential with the cool sounding guitar whaling in the background, but just turns out to be an average.
11. " I Just Want To See The Boy Happy" - I cant figure out if Morrissey is singing or talking here, however his voice overpowers the music. The song ends with a horrible trumpet blowing in your ear. Please never work with this producer again.
12. " At Last I Am Born" At Last this is Finished yawn Yawn Yawn! I would vote this the worst song on the album but that honor was already given.
13. 'Irish Blood English Heart Live" - WHY? This has no business being on this CD
If I sounded Harsh That's because this CD was a huge dissapointment. I'm sure all the blinded Morrisseyites will be protesting this review. but I'm here to keep it honest. Time to take the 10 million you were offered and re-unite "The Smiths" If this is all you got left time to cash out.
