Free Music Notes for Ringleader of the TormentorsFree Music Review: Ringleader is Me Hit: 4 Stars
I anticipated buying this CD so much that I bought myself a copy of the Manchester Live DVD. I'm glad that I have both now, and they are highly entertaining. Morrissey has said that most singers are dreadful, and that couldn't be more true. I listen to Morrissey because I like his voice, his lyrics, and his music. And we get plenty of that in "Ringleader of the Tormentors"
Sporting a new drummer who does wonderful on the half dance floor, have power ballad "Life is a Pigsty", and a slick producer "Visconti" we get a fresh and polished sound here. You will find yourself singing along with "You Have Killed Me", "To Me You are a Work of Art", and the lamenting "Dear God Please Help Me" within a few listens of these lovely, catchy, and melodic tunes. On Ringleader we get to hear the band take or share the lead roles more than before. The bass work on "To Me You Are A Work of Art" is quite melodic; the trumpet solos are a delightful surprise. Add a children's choir, "The Youngest Was The Most Loved", and some violins and you get the rich and thick texture that Ringleaders is made of.
The cover picture of Morrissey playing a violin with graphics and fonts that resemble a classical music recording is pretty funny. I could have done without the "hidden" message in the liner notes. Just my opinion though, I would rather focus on a musicians music than their political views. Ringleaders is yet another consistently good recording that fits in well with Morrissey's many and consistently well performed recordings.
Free Music Review: reviews have killed me... Hit: 4 Stars
I'm fascinated by the level of critics I read for this album. It's like talking about a Disney movie: an album, it 's good because it's fast, upbeat but with variety and variations!!!! Then Ringleader is one note all along.... Maybe but what a note! Our new Casanova like a novelist send us his brand new sexual emotions. I will not try to compare with previous albums. I'd only say that it's the dark answer to You're the quarry which was so soft and pop I almost didn't recognize Morrissey. Ringleader feels like the first ever ego centered progressive rock album! Because this charming album gains in the fact that it's old Morrissey talking. Sure there are mistakes and Smithslike tunes (Youngest(...) sounds almost like a parody) but I must have listen to Life is a Pigsty at least 30 times in a week... No tunes like that on the Quarry album. In fact it reminds me the beautiful instrospection of This woman's work by Kate Bush. That's really talented artists: they don't try to redo their hits and effects for fans, they just turn around their music and express what they feel at the moment. If he sounds in love and at the end of his life (at 47!) that's good because he's not pretending to be cool and young in a caricature of an 80's icon all mysterious and dark! In fact it's a bit like if you made a full album of November spawned a Monster (a Morrissey genious tune for the neophite), isn't that tempting?
Free Music Review: Ringleader surpassing Quarry Hit: 4 Stars
I would like to prefer this album as his real comeback album since the 90's over YATQ. Sure YATQ was a good album, but nothing more. With this album I feel that Morrissey has finally gotten the production that a main with his level of skill deserves. Every track on this cd seems to create a picture, or shall I quote the mozzer by saying it "paints a vulgar picture" With such tracks as at last am I born representing The Mozzers recent evident desire for sex finally after 47 years. Also with the track dear god please help me The Moz cries "I have explosive kegs in between my legs" and u can feel the emotion in with every yelp. The father who must be killed is a very creative way of storytelling that puts him up with the best of them (Springsteen, Dylan, etc.) There are a few instant classic tracks but everyone is not. I find myself not really caring for only 1 track, "In the future when all is well." But I also find myself in great love with you have killed me, the youngest was the most loved, and the lovely life is a pigsty. Those 3 I think match up with any of his greatest tracks. Sure the Mozzer is getting older, and is finally starting to get recognized, but lets just hope that he doesnt decide to throw in the towel anytime soon. I feel this is his best cd since Vauxhall and I...A must for any Moz fan.
Free Music Review: Fan Since 1985 Hit: 4 Stars
The Bad: I Will See You In Far Off Places should have rocked harder. There are places where the guitars should have stood out a little more. The singing on On The Streets I Ran seems at times to be at odds with the music. Etc.
The Good: Life Is A Pigtsy really is fantastic and my clear favorite on the CD. It is the shortest seven minute song ever. (Please play it at my funeral.) You Have Killed Me fits perfect after Dear God Please Help Me, the latter of which is one very heartfelt song even if the sexual implications make you wince. I like the children's choir and the sirens and the storm. I also like the speaking section on At Last I Am Born - all these little gimmicks work. The singing on I'll Never Be Anybodys Hero Now is just great. His voice was used well on this album, not always the same old straightforward singing, but strong and more broad.
Overall this is a very good CD from a legendary artist but it is not quite perfect. (We fans expect so much) It will grow on you and all of these songs will sound fantastic live. Looking forward to that...
Also, I bought the deluxe version and the packaging is brilliant. I've never been so impressed with packaging before.
Buy it...
Free Music Review: A great followup to the Quarry.... Hit: 4 Stars
Some have said this was a disappointing album after the marvelous You Are the Quarry, but it isn't disappointing at all. It's awesome! It's just another typical example of brilliance from St. Morrissey. What can you say about a song (the song You Have Killed Me) that starts out with the line "Pasolini is me/Accatone you'll be"? You say it's awesome. I love Pasolini (a great filmmaker), and Accatone was his first film (the word "accatone" is Italian slang for a person who is a never do well, lazy, and shiftless). The Youngest Was the Most Loved is another great song. Remember, "there is no such thing in life as normal", and the youngest turned into a killer. Many have criticised the 7 1/2 minute Life is a Pigsty, but I like the epic quality of it. It totally works. Moz has done epic songs before (the underrated Southpaw Grammar has two epic tracks, one at 10 minutes, the other at 11 1/4 minutes), and Life is a Pigsty is a great one. This album also has one of Morrissey's greatest titles. This is a very worthy follow up to Morrissey's comeback, You Are the Quarry, and it's another great album by the man we all love (or should love).
