Free Music Notes for Motley Crue

Free Music Review: Underrated and has never been given a chance
Hit: 5 Stars

The album Motley Crue has suffered from huge repercussions for the last 15 years. Fans have shunned this album for many reasons. For one thing, the band hired a new lead singer to replace the supposedly fired Vince Neil. His name is John Corabi. Secondly, the band's decision to name the album simply Motley Crue was a mistake because this album is incredibly un-Crue like in sound, not to mention having a new lead singer. I think because of these things, maybe the right thing for the band to do would have been to change their name. Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, and John Corabi are........some other band. Not Motley Crue. If a name change would have occurred, maybe hard rock fans would have embraced this album. On the other hand, with having a lineup that features three-fourths of the original Crue lineup, fans at concerts would expect them to play a lot of Motley Crue songs. I think the band was in a dilemma, so they decided to keep the band name and be Motley Crue and tour as Motley Crue, which obviously means they would play Crue songs at their concerts. I think the bigger mistake was naming the album Motley Crue, because it is sort of misleading, because Motley Crue the band was always one style of music with Vince Neil on vocals. But here it was the band was trying to say to people that this 1994 album was MOTLEY CRUE. A self-titled album. To many people, this was beyond comprehension that the band would name the album Motley Crue after dramatically changing their sound and hiring a new singer. Now about the album...

This album is so different from all their others. John Corabi sounds nothing like Vince Neil. He plays guitar along with Mick Mars. The music is very heavy. Almost like pure heavy metal. I think of this album as Motley Crue's "Black Album" (Metallica). Get what I mean? The production is outstanding and the lyrics are more intelligent than a typical Crue album. The overall sound is sort of like dirge. There aren't as many pure melodies as there are on other Crue albums. A good example is the song Girls Girls Girls. You won't find anything like that on this album. Kickstart My Heart is another good example. But you know what? This album is awesome despite it being so different from their other material. It's melodic HEAVY METAL that's on the dark side, not HARD ROCK that's on the lighter side, like most of the albums with Vince Neil on vocals. If you are a Crue fan that has always shunned this album and never bothered to purchase it, I have a recommendation. You just have to think of them as some other band. Not Motley Crue. Just think of them as......Motley Something. Fill in the blank. When you do that, you'll be able to judge this album for what it is. You'll take it at face value. This album has so many good tracks. I didn't buy this album until 2002 for the very reasons I've been describing. I finally bought it out of curiosity. I'm so glad I did, because it is such a good album. It became my soundtrack for the summer of 2002. I still listen to it frequently. The music has attitude and power and is so raw. It grabs you immediately. Standout tracks are Power To The Music, Uncle Jack, Hooligan's Holiday, Misunderstood, Poison Apples, Hammered, Til Death Do Us Part, Welcome To The Numb, Smoke The Sky, and Droppin' Like Flies. Practically the whole album. Another thing -- John Corabi is such an underrated singer. I often think that it actually might have been a mistake when the band got rid of Corabi and re-hired Neil. I miss Corabi's vocals and the really heavy sound from this album. This album in my mind no doubt got buried by the grunge movement of the mid-1990s. Timing is everything, and to compete with grunge at that time with a new singer trying to fill Vince Neil's shoes, combined with the fact that this album was the follow-up to their most successful album (Dr. Feelgood) just made this project or "experiment" a disaster. Years later we can look back and think what could have been if the band had Corabi during a different time period. This album is far superior to Generation Swine, which came out in 1997 with Vince Neil back on vocals. Do yourself a favor and get this underrated and underappreciated album from........Motley Crue (or whatever you'd personally like to call them). How 'bout Corabi's Crue?
