Motley Crue-Shout At The Devil ****1/2

Nikki Sixx said he wrote the entire album Shout At The Devil inspired by the sound of Mick Mars' guitar sound, I can believe it. Mars' guitar crunch is really the backbone for the whole damn thing. From his chugging riff on the title track to his overly cheesy, yet very much essential distortion on the cover of The Beatles' 'Helter Skelter' Mars guitar gives the album the balls it needs.

While on it's release nearly every critic cited this as the most "unoriginal album ever" I must say in hindsight that is just ignorant. Yeah glam had been done before with Bowie, The New York Dolls, and Bolen, and yeah shock had been done before with Alice Cooper, Kiss, and W.A.S.P. but never were they mixed together, and never was it this loud. So it isn't the most original thing ever, it is the musing of a few styles, but then again everything in rock n' roll after Frank Zappa's Freak Out hasn't been totally original.

The opening was meant to be cool but does come across as stupid. The title track as well as 'Looks That Kill' are glam-metal (if that title makes sense) classics. 'Bastard' Kills! 'Helter Skelter' owns the original in my opinion. 'Red Hot' is essential. 'Too Young Too Fall In Love' is the best song the band ever recorded that wasn't included on their greatest hits package. The albums three closing tracks 'Knock Em Dead Kid' 'Ten Seconds To Love' and 'Danger' are all Motley classics.

The only weak moments on the album are the opener and the 'God Bless The Children Of The Beast' segue which are just a stupid attempt at camp. Nikki Sixx is one of the most underrated songwriters of all time, he really has a talent for melody and rock lyrics. Vince Neils vocals sound the best here that they ever did, and Tommy Lee proves once again that he is one of the elite in the world of drumming. This is easily the best Motley album. The only one to even contend is Too Fast For Love. Dr. Feelgood has too much filler. If you want some good Motley then Shout At The Devil is the way to go.

Free Music Review: Shout, Shout, Shout!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

The absolute best album of the early 80's. If you're expecting glam rock, you'd better turn away from this monstrocity!

In The Beginning: A tale written by Nikki Sixx and narrated by Allister Fiend. A great way to set the atmosphere of the brutatlity to come.

Shout At The Devil: A definite classic! Driving riff and screeching vocals propel this song to the Motley Cosmos!

Looks That Kill: Killer guitars and soaring vocals! Great chorus and typical Motley lyrics make this a classic.

Bastard: Cool lyrics and pulverizing guitars. One of the albums best.

God Bless The Children Of The Beast: A great instrumental composed by the most underrated guitarist in rock history, Mick Mars. Very cool.

Helter Skelter: Yes THAT Helter Skelter and it brings the Beatle's sound to new heights.

Red Hot: Crushing bass line and awewome chorus! This is one to headbang to!

Too Young To Fall In Love: Great vocals and a really awesome riff make this a Motley Crue staple.

Knock Em' Dead Kid: Full blown metal!!!! Rocks hard from beginning to end.

Ten Seconds To Love: A great rocker dedicated to the funnest activity known to man, sex. Good riff and good vocals.

Danger: One of the album's best. Beautiful vocals and pulsing rhythms.

*the following songs are from the Crucial Crue version*

Shout At The Devil (Demo): More raw than the final version and the vocals are slightly different.

Looks That Kill (Demo): Basically the same song, although a bit more raw.

Hotter Than Hell (Demo): This is the demo to the song "Louder Than Hell" which is on the "Theatre Of Pain" album. I actually like this one better. It is a great rocking song.

I Will Survive (Unreleased Track): This is my favorite song on this album and I don't know why it wasn't on the original version. The vocals are really great, and the lyrics are some of Nikki Sixx's best.

Get this album if you have ears!

Free Music Review: Sleeze metal at its finest
Hit: 5 Stars

Shout At The Devil is, in my opinion, the best Motley Crue album ever. Why? Several reasons. For one, this album was really their breakthrough release. Sure, Too Fast For Love was great, but back in 1983 most people had never heard of this band until they appeared at the US Festival in May. Then this album came out later on in the year. Secondly, this is RAW heavy metal/sleeze metal. It's the kind of sound that I like to call sleeze metal or street fighting music. The thing that makes this album so appealing to me compared to their other albums after Shout At The Devil is the fact that there is no layering of guitar (overdubbing) over pre-recorded guitar by guitarist Mick Mars. In other words, he plays backup guitar and lead guitar all at once, instead of recording the backup guitar and then perhaps the next day he adds the lead guitar layered over the backup guitar. It is this rawness that makes this album stand out in their catalogue.

The best tracks on this album are...all of them. The title track is a pop metal classic. Looks That Kill is, too. Too Young To Fall In Love changes the pace a little bit and has a memorable guitar riff. Knock 'Em Dead, Kid is my personal favorite song on this album and my favorite Crue song ever. An often overlooked song is Danger. A great song with a softer sound and approach, but it fits right in. Other standouts are Bastard, Red Hot, and Helter Skelter.

This is Motley Crue at their best. Raw. Powerful. Tons of attitude. In Your Face. Buy this album or any of the different versions that have been released over the years. Long live The Crue.

Free Music Review: Shout At The Devil
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is without a doubt Motley Crue at it's best. The band released many good album's after this including Theater Of Pain, Girls Girls Girls, and Dr FeelGood but I feel none can match up to this one. This is raw heavy Motley Crue. Almost each and every song on the album is a classic. The bonus tracks are awesome for any true Motley Crue fan. This album shows just how bad ass Motley Crue was when this album came out in the 80's. For a band who is known as a Glam Metal band, hearing this album wouldn't make you think for one second they were glam metal. Shout At The Devil besides being the name of the album is a classic Crue song and by far one of they're most popular. Then there is Looks That Kill which along with Too Young To Fall In Love are my two favorite songs on the album. They did an excellent cover to the Beatles original Helter Skelter. Plus every other song on the album is good and I don't think there is one weak thing about this album and it is heavy and solid the whole way through. Sure the bands albums have toned down alot after this one but this one was the stand out for the band. This is a must have for any Motley Crue fan. If you are just starting to get into 80's Metal I highly recommend this album as one of your firt albums along with Skid Row's self titled album, Iron Maiden's Number Of The Beast, Metallica's Master Of Puppets, and Megadeth's Peace Sells But Who's Buying. Trust me this album will not be a disappointment.

Free Music Review: It'll always be their best
Hit: 5 Stars

'In the Beginning', a post apocalipse account of a teenage revolution kicks this classic album off, what follows is an album of revolt, sleaze, sex, and rock-n-roll. No other album was as important to kicking off metal in the 80's (not even Metal Health) like 'Shout at the Devil'. Every 12-13 year old that had heard this when it was first released, are the headbangers of today that have refused to fall into the wasteland of 90's grunge, and 2000's craporama.

Almost AC/DC like in simplicity, the attitude on this album blows thousands of other albums out of the water. The snarling intro to the title track gets you in the mood to rock like nothing else. On this album is the best studio version of 'Helter Skelter' found anywhere.

Oh the Crue when they were young and hungry. I haven't heard 'New Tattoo' yet so I'll leave it out of the following comparison. This album destroys any other project they ever did, including the overated 'Dr. Feelgood'. SATD is heavy, angry, and opens the doors to a world where the scum of the earth reign as kings. I'll never forget when 'Theatre of Pain' was released. It was a shock to say the least, but that's a different review.
