Free Music Notes for Shout at the DevilFree Music Review: And the award for most embarassing CD cover goes to..... Hit: 4 Stars
Though my tastes in metal expands to some rather chintzy realms hair metal generally isn't my thing. Nevertheless, I was listening to radio a while back, and I heard 'Too Young to Fall in Love'. I remembered that I really liked that song, and also that other Crue song, 'Looks That Kill', and that those two songs were probably on the same album. And thus the die was cast and there was no turning back and I was compelled bought a Motley Crue album a couple of days later. Turns out it was pretty good.
Though, while looking at the album cover, it is impossible to deny that Motley Crue was a hair metal band at this point, 'Shout at the Devil' doesn't totally fit into the genre as we usually think of it. Most significantly, Motley Crue was not yet popular enough at the time to warrant horrible overproduction, so this album has some edge and is actually reasonably heavy by the standards of the time. It's unquestionably true metal, unlike much latter glam stuff. It perhaps a little primitive, but it's catchy enough and has some great riffs. Neil's vox aren't great, but aren't terribly irritating either. Again, guitarwork is generally the most memorable thing on the album.
Variety is not this albums great strength, largely just a bunch of fairly moderate to moderately fast rockers. It isn't always totally memorable either, but it's always fun and listenable enough through out its fairly brief run time. 'Too Young To Fall in Love' is the best thing here, easily. That main riff just rules, and it's got a great chorus. 'Looks That Kill' is another good one. More good riffs in general, particularly the chorus riff. The title track is, again, pretty primitive, but it's infectious enough as such things go. 'Knock 'Em Dead Kid' and 'Ten Seconds To Love' are both excellent late tracks. Pretty similar, really, good melodic riff progressions and big choruses that really standout. The album closes with 'Danger' the one out and out ballad on the album. I wouldn't have thought Neil's vox would've flown in such a thing, but it turns out pretty well, though it's got some cheesy synths. Another nice chorus though, like pretty much everything else on the album.
Yeah, I'm done. A fun album.
Free Music Review: Attitude, Energy and Urgency...and Adrenaline! Hit: 4 Stars
No, folks, "Shout At The Devil" isn't a masterpiece of technical wizardry and/or brutal, thrashing heaviness...but that's not what it's about anyway. It's about energy and attitude...fist-pumping adrenaline...and good ol' fashioned headbanging. This is the essence of what Motley Crue is all about...raunch 'n' roll...but with a harder, darker edge than their previous or subsequent albums. It stands out because of that...the focus here was on darker, sinister, heavier music and themes...there's not as much of the tongue-in-cheek humorous sneer that marks Motley Crue's other works. This was about leather and spikes. It's simple, direct, to-the-point classic metal. With this album Motley Crue really opened the door to the L.A. metal and "pop" metal scenes (though I wouldn't classify this as pop metal...it's more classic metal). It's a highly influential album. Again, it's a simple formula: rude guitars, snarling, screaming, sultry vocals, pounding bass and drums. You won't find musical breakthroughs here, but you will find two things on here that make this album worthy: classic metal guitar riffs and licks, and GROOVE. It's 4/4 and it grooves and pounds -- after all, despite his personal issues, you have one of the better rock/metal drummers on this album in the person of Tommy Lee. So check it out and hear one of the albums that started it all. Get past the 80's leather-and-spikes and hairspray look and you'll find some metal to get your head banging. "Looks That Kill", "Shout At The Devil", "Too Young To Fall In Love" and a killer cover of "Helter Skelter."
Free Music Review: He's a blood stain on the stage... Hit: 4 Stars
While their debut may have been the better of the two records, `Shout at the Devil' made Motley Crue heavy metal superstars and led to claim their `decade of decadence'. With a more pronounced heavy metal sound (louder drums and more distorted heavier guitar) `Shout' is the album by which Motley Crue is best known. It contains arguably their two most recognizable songs in the title track and "Looks That Kill". They are definitely two of the band's best works and deserve their notoriety. The latter made them stars on MTV as did the follow-up "Too Young to Fall in Love". I still remember my first reaction to this ridiculous band; were they glam? Satanic? All women? Envelope pushers for sure and maybe not the cleverest rock band to blow up a stage but man they sure had something. Star power, charisma, whatever you want to call it they were definitely a second generation KISS and that sense. My overall impression of `Shout at the Devil' is while it is infinitely better than the records that followed (even `Dr. Feelgood' which I feel was a concession to the true hair metal formula) it still is not the LP the debut was in terms of innocent stupidity and glam charm. That being said, `Shout at the Devil' is the record anyone who wants to know why these guys were so successful in the `80' needs to hear.
Free Music Review: SHOCK ROCK RETURNS Hit: 4 Stars
crue ups the ante with this strong followup to the punkpop classic too fast for love. maybe not as solid throughout ("god bless the children of the beast" screams filler, and covers were never the crue's strong suit - see "helter skelter"), the ferocious atmosphere of this record is what makes it work. it's more evil than kiss OR alice cooper ever was. the riffs are killer - check out "looks that kill" and "too young to fall in love". and maybe the best track is the last one, "danger" "you're in danger and this is my town - this is hollywood..."
