Free Music Review: Excellent debut album-especially for a hair metal group
Hit: 5 Stars

The time:1982. What was up in the music industry lately? Disco was dead, hard rock groups from the 70's such as KISS,Aerosmith,Van Halen, among others, were still popular;however, people were wanting a new genre of music. So,in the early 80's,even though hair metal bands like Ratt and Dokken were showing up and giving people a good time, one of the first(and definitely one of the best)hair metal groups that would give people a good time during that decade was Motley Crue. This album, for some reason,is controversial among several Crue fans, but it is one heck of a debut album-especially for a hair metal band. Read on for my review of this:

This album gave Motley Crue a really good introduction. When they started out, they all proved to be talented-the only problem was that they wore makeup, and it seemed like they were trying to hard to be like KISS(the makeup Tommy Lee was wearing at that point was similiar to Peter Criss'"Catman" makeup in KISS). Other than that, everything here was really in top form. The album opens with "Live Wire",which is an awesome way to open an album, and the other highlights to be found here are the title track,"Piece Of Your Action","Take Me To The Top"...there are so many great tracks here,it is hard to pick favorite songs off of this record after You've picked "Live Wire"and "Piece Of Your Action" as your first two favorites! The songwriting here is really good..the only Crue members who co-wrote the songs on this record are Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx, although Sixx wrote most of the material on here by himself(Neil and Sixx wrote only two songs on here together;the rest of the songs here were wither written by either just Sixx or a guy who is credited in the liner notes as "L. Grey"). The performances here are really good,Vince Neil(in my opinion)is one of the greatest rock and roll frontmen of all time, and this album gave him the opportunity to show off his singing talents professionally for the first time. Nikki Sixx proved to be a talented songwriter with this record and a talented bassist(his bass work on "Live Wire" shreds!!!!)and Tommy Lee and Mick Mars, while they had the least amount of contributions to this record, did a really good job with showing off their talents for the first time like Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx did here. Also, the production here sounds really good;Michael Wagner, who worked with some German bands(as both a songwriter and a band member)who would later go on to produce Warrant's third album,1992's "Dog Eat Dog"(which was a little bit of a hair metal album and an album that was both hard and dark)helped produce this album.I've only heard two albums that Wagner worked on(this and "Dog Eat Dog")but I must say,he sure does have talent as a producer.

As a bonus for this album,it has been re-issued and re-released with expanded liner notes,an enhanced CD that includes the music video for "Live Wire",and four bonus tracks were included here:two previously unreleased demos(an original song called "Toast Of The Town" and a cover of The Raspberries' "Tonight",an alternate intro for the title track off of this album, and the live version of "Merry Go-Round"(another song that appeared on this album)that Motley Crue recorded live in San Antonio,Texas sometime either before or after this album came out,as well as another song that did not make it's way on this album;"Stick To Your Guns".

A classic album, and an album that deserves to be heard by all fans of both Motley Crue and hair metal music.

Free Music Review: Electric love like Sandra Dee...
Hit: 5 Stars

An almost perfect combination of punk, glam and metal; `Too Fast for Love's reputation has grown over the past several years as the definitive Motley Crue record. Crudely (Cruedly?) recorded in 1981 and originally released independently under the band's own label Leathur Records, `Too Fast for Love' saw the beginnings of quite possibly the filthiest rock band in history. The brainchild of twenty two year old Franklin Ferrana who a short time after he began his career as a full time rocker and part-time delinquent changed his name legally to Nikki Sixx and the rest, as they say is history! Sixx found other like-minded misfits in Tommy Lee Bass, Vince Neil Wharton and an absolute wretched looking Bob Deal who called himself Mick Mars and played the rudest sounding guitar in his own advertisement when Nikki found him. Four of the luckiest (and sleaziest) individuals to walk the planet were now and forever a band, no matter what clashes they have had (or drug overdoses, or firings) and no other foursome who called themselves Motley Crue were REALLY the Crue! It has always been Nikki, Tommy, Vince and Mick even if they don't really like each other after almost 30 years. `Too Fast for Love's genius is its ultra raw recording and unabashed borrowing from Sex Pistols, Sweet, Aerosmith, Kiss and the Stones. "Live Wire" is the band's call to arms and is followed in quick succession by such monuments to depravity as "Public Enemy No. 1", "Piece of Your Action", "Come On and Dance" and the autobiographical (of sorts) "On With the Show". Some of the lyrics are so absurdly ridiculous that they make KISS seem like Shakespeare but it all works (especially the title track...."puts her legs up well you call it good luck, do you know what I mean"). But I friggin' love it! Motley never surpassed their debut in its raw intensity and comic pornography and that's what makes it a true classic of the hair metal era.

Free Music Review: ANOTHER GEM FROM THE GOLDEN AGE.....
Hit: 5 Stars

1981 was a peak year for rock music. I can remember being a sperm in my fathers nut sack and thinking about how SO many great records came out of this year, alot of bands were splicing styles, mixing up a raw breed of metal, punk, and glam, that hadn't gone into the void of hair metal yet. It was the pinnacle of a building rock sound that had started rolling around 1974, and just got harder, faster, and more tripped out as it went along.
Motley Crues debut album from this year is no exception. The following year would bring Shout At The Devil, where the Crue blew heads with a room filling, ace kicking sound (this was before the outrageous eighties production values) but on this first album, the production is very meat and potatoes, and is all the better for it. No other Crue album has the same straight up feel as Too Fast For Love. This one is a straight up hard rock classic. LIVE WIRE is a killer track, and is the template for most of the bands future hard rockers, but every other song on here a unique slice. Take the title track, completely a raw type of energy on that one, shout along chorus, almost a punk song. The ballady STARRY EYES with its haunted heavy mid break section. The ripping PEICE OF YOUR ACTION, or the head spinning MERRY GO ROUND, or the plain old bad assness of PUBLIC ENEMY #1. This is a rockin peice of work, and undoubtedly; along with the follow up, Motley Crues finest hour.

Free Music Review: To Fast for the L.A. music scene...
Hit: 5 Stars

I dont even need to write a review for this one. Im sure everyone who likes hard rock or Metal has heard this, but I love it so much, I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. This is not Pop radio's Motley Crue. There's no Dr. Feelgood, No Without You, No Primal Scream... Its not writen for the radio. Its written by a man (Nikki Sixx) and his band that wanted to kick the Sh*t out of the music scene at the time. And it did. As a precursor to the mega hit Shout at the Devil, this was a sign of things to come for the next couple years for the Crue. This one is the way Metal should still sound today if it still had any soul. All you have to do is push play and here Mick's pick hit the string right before the reverb driven opening riff of Live Wire blows up your speakers. With that, they drive throgh the next couple songs with the same power until they slow down tho play the first of a wonderful string of power ballads in thier career (Merry-Go-Round). Then back to the speed and brutallity. Ive heard it said that because they had a blonde lead singer and big hair that they were the leaders of the hair metal movement. But I challenge any of those bands even to this day to come up with a record that even comes close to rivaling this one. Aint gonna Happen! Rock on forever Crue!!!

STARRY EYES- Probably my favorite from this Disc. Just listen..you'll see why 6/5

TOO FAST FOR LOVE- My favorite first line of any song "Livin' on a jet makin' love to someone elses dream", Wow! Why is that such a catchy line?
