Free Music Notes for Moulin Rouge, Vol. 2 [Music from the Motion Picture]

Free Music Review: THANK YOU 5 Stars

FINALLY. A soundtrack that lives up to the movie. Not that I'm complaining about the first one, cause The Elphant Love Melody, Your Song and the orignal version of One Day I'll Fly Away is on there, and i think I'm the only one who still likes Lady Marmalade. And for once, I'm doing this by song.

1: Your Song - instrumental (Rehearsal Montage) -- Good instumental piece, good start to the cd. Wouldn't mind Ewan's voice, but I'll live. 4/5

2. Sparkling Diamonds. -- Good, fun music, minus Satine and Zidler talking, but still good. 5/5

3. One Day I'll Fly Away - Tony Phillips Remix -- WHAT THE HECK. A remix? NO. Tho, it is a decent remix, and they did put the orignal version of this song on the first soundtrack. 3/5

4. Spectaculuar Spectacular -- Not my fav screen in the movie, but still a fun song. 5/5

5. Come What May -- My fav song off this cd. I adore this song, and it's the version from the movie. YAY! 10/5

6. Like A Virgin -- Makes me laugh cause i picture the screen from the movie. I wonder what Madonna thinks of it. Thanks for putting it on this cd, Baz. 5/5

7. Meet Me In the Red Room -- the only song not sung by one of the stars in the movie. This is the song when Satine is getting ready to meet the Duke (or Christan). Done by Amiel. 4/5

8. Your Song - Instrumental (After The Storm) -- good. 4/5

9. The Show Must Go On -- Good song, good vocals, turning point of the movie. 5/5

10. Ascension/Nature Boy (death and ascension) -- You can almost picture the screen. 4/5

11. Closing Credits: "Bolero" -- considering to this date I haven't watched the closing credits, i can't really relay it back to the movie. Good music tho. 5/5

ANYHOW, if you liked the movie, get this cd. If you one of many who feel that the first soundtrack wasn't worthy of the movie, get this cd. WORTH THE MONEY.

Free Music Review: About darn tootin' time!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I rejoiced when a good friend of mine told me that it had been decided to release a second Moulin Rouge album! I already own the hard to get Promotional Album and most of the music on the Promo has now made it on this new release which features Craig Armstrong's wonderful score mixed with songs that were not on the first album . There is the rather strange but funny version of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" , the excellent and even more melancholic Queen cover "The Show must Go on" and the frenzied and enjoyably devious medley called "The Pitch" made it also finally on the album. The highlight though is the wonderful score by Scottish born composer Craig Armstrong. In what seems like a mix between the best portions of his scores for Plunkett and Macleane and The Bone Collector, he is responsible for dealing with many of the emotions found on screen. His score is never loud, in fact it is extremely low-key and melodic but nonetheless get's the emotion across effectively. His themes aren't catchy or uplifting, instead somber and melancholy. This is especially revealed in the movie version of "Come What May" which had already been included on the B-Side of the "Come What May" single. Unfortunately the sad albeit beautiful " A Fool to Believe" didn't make it on the second album which is a shame but the end credits did! It is titled "Bolero" and offers simplistic rhythms with a maniac playing the violin andorchestra offering. It has a sort of genuine carnival feel to it and I am very glad that it is finally included on the second album. Overall the second commercial album is significantly better than the first because it finally includes the score and movie versions of the songs. It is more than a shame (actually a scandal) that the Academy Award Jury has considered the score not to be eligible for entry!

Free Music Review: Captures the soul of the film the first CD didn`t.
Hit: 5 Stars

I`m so glad to find out I wasn`t the only one dissapointed by the content of the first soundtrack. If you went to see the movie in the theatre and watched it from beginning to the end with as much involvement as I did, then I`m sure by the end the last thing stuck in your head was that "Lady Marmalade" pop [junk]. Have you seen Christina in the music video? It`s revolting. It`s like you`ve got this beautiful tree and then all the commercialization has to come along and [ruin] it. There were some things on the soundtrack that I enjoyed listening to over and over again, like Ewan McGregor`s beautiful version of "Your Song", the intense "Roxanne" tango, but I was so dissapointed that there were other things not included on the CD. The music in Moulin Rouge was what pulled the movie together - it`s the language the characters use to express their emotions and it weaves the whole atmosphere with nothing but incredibly composed notes. I thought the whole thing was ingenius, and I would have loved to have every single shred of music out of the movie on a CD, even Nicole Kidman`s minute-long version of Lamb`s "Gorecki". My sister and I had declared that they needed to make a second soundtrack because it would be the CD of our dreams, and when she actually found it at the bookstore we both freaked out. I`d heard the piano instrumental of "Your Song" on a special feature of my DVD and was so excited to discover it on this album, along with the end credits and the version of "Come What May" that appears in the movie, which I think is a lot more beautiful and capturing than the other. All of the music of "Moulin Rouge" is what makes it more than a movie but sort of a beautiful thing only the right kind of people can appreciate, and this soundtrack does a better job of expressing that than the first.

Free Music Review: Good overall, but comes up short...
Hit: 5 Stars

Compliments>> Five stars because it's a second soundtrack including songs that all fans would love in some way, shape or form. I adored the first track, "Your Song" -instrumental, mainly because of the DVD. There's a beautiful montage of costume tests and such when you choose to see the Cast Info portion, during which the "Your Song" instrumental track is played. Of course, "The Pitch" is another favorite of mine that didn't make the first cut on the first CD, but is on the second CD in all its glory. "Meet me in the Red Room" was a pleasant surprise, presented in it's entirety on this CD but cut short in the movie itself. "The Show Must Go On" still contained that inherent power that it did in the film--loved its presence on the CD. Lastly, "Bolero" is one of my favorite tracks overall. Great choice!

Gripes>> Alrighty, I want to know what happened to the Green Fairy Absinthe's number in the movie--I was looking forward to the song and it's no where to be found! The "Zigler Rap" fails to make an appearance on this CD as well, followed by the medley of songs before "Sparkling Diamonds" in the movie--it's a shame those didn't make this CD. Also, some dialogue shoud've been included with "Like a Virgin" and "Sparkling Diamonds"--"Like a Virgin" isn't nearly as funny without the preceding dialogue! It would've also been cool to have some of the preceding dialogue in "Roxanne," but that's a Moulin Rouge soundtrack one gripe. ;p

Overall>>This CD is a must for any fan! But it could've definitely been better.

Free Music Review: Good but Not Exactly Complete
Hit: 5 Stars

I was severely disappointed after buying the first MR album when I discovered that so many of the great songs were missing. So, naturally, I was extrememly happy when I found out the second album was coming out. (I won't bother to list the new songs, since most of the previous reviewers did.) However, there were still some songs missing that, at least I thought, were very awesome: Come What May (reprise at the end), Coup d'Etat (the finale and also my favorite song), Zidler's Rap (the introduction to the MR and the Smells Like Teen Spirit/Lady Marmalade number), The Hunkadola (only featured for a few seconds, but it sounded promising), Gorecki (a short but powerful snippet sung by Nicole Kidman), A Fool to Believe (another snippet), The opening titles music (featuring The Sound of Music and Roxanne), plus some great background instrumental music featured on the DVD menus. I'm particularly fond of that song with the typewriter-beat (any hardcore fan should know what I mean). In fact, I think if they scrounged up a few more instrumentals and remixes (which I actually like most of the time) they could probably put together a third album, which might not be a bad idea, considering the demand I've read for the remainder of the songs in other reviews.

The only thing I found odd with this soundtrack was the lack of advertising. I found out about it through my Amazon.com recommendations, and would have been completely oblivious to it if it wasn't for that. I think this album would do great if it were advertised more.
