Free Music Review: Makes the heart sing for non-musical movie lovers
Hit: 5 Stars

Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor are a perfect match for this album. Both actors can hold a tune with the reworked songs and definatley carry the various songs meanings. The characters they portray in the film are believeable and not sappy! Ewan singing his version of "Don't Leave Me this Way" by Thelma Houston and "I Will Always Love You" version by Whitney are truly funny and done very well (go see the movie to find out why)! Try and guess and name the songs he sings during the Elephant Medley! The Elephant Medley is a perfect example of the films creativity and wit (the infamous reworking of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" is also hilarious)! Nicole's solo of "One Day I'll Fly Away" is haunting and hypnotic. She conveys the message of her character Satine to the audience very well. Possible Oscar/Golden Globe nomination for next year maybe! Her voice is soft and has meaning. A full blowout by a some popular DIVA would detract from the films/sountrack's meaning and make it too cheezy and Hollywood-ish. Nicole sings in a way that shows her character is vulnerable to the world, powerful, and believeable. And yes they do sing FOR REAL on the album. Personally as a non-musical lover (i.e. Broadway) I was truly amazed and in awe of thier talents. Mind you I mostly listen to Hip-Hop/R&B and was dragged to go see the film of the same name. I am glad I did. The Moulin Rouge album is a perfect example of how music in general can be interwoven to tell a full tale. If you buy the album, you MUST go see the movie in order to appreciate the full talents from Nicole and Ewan. Otherwise you will be dissapointed and think Nicole can't sing. Go and see the movie to see how the songs on the soundtrack are used in the film. The new "Lady Marmalade" version does appear in the movie as there is a major dance number to it (there is even a brief dance remix in the film). But don't buy the album just for this song. Moulin Rouge sets the standards for film musicals and film Hip Operas (i.e. Beyonce and MTV's CARMEN) to follow! This is a new trend no doubt!

Free Music Review: A NEW MUSICAL MASTERPIECE
Hit: 5 Stars

A triumph. This beautiful, evocative CD starts off with David Bowie in "Nature Boy" - An ambient, melancholy song that sets the mood for this sad, grand vision of Baz Luhrmann's. The Divas themselves bring us a rousing, tightly arranged version of that classic 70's disco bad-girl anthem, "Lady Marmalade", and Christina, Pink, Mya, and Li'l Kim do it in style. Fatboy Slim takes us to a football match/Can-Can with "Because We Can", a thumping, throbbing interlude, and ...then we come to the cream on this wonderful cake: Nicole and Ewan. Whatever you have heard, disregard, and LISTEN to the music!! Nicole's heart-rending "Someday I'll Fly Away" will bring tears to the most jaded eyes, and the sweet poignancy with which she sings hits the PERFECT note. Ewan's "Your Song" is the piec'e de resistance- His pure, clear, beautiful voice will shock all, and the arrangements on this one are big, beautiful, and while the Opera Man was wonderful, he was not necessary, for Ewan needs no accompaniment to make him look good, and this song is the centerpiece of the CD. He stands alone. Dare I say, an improvement on the sublime Elton John version? True. Nicole and Ewan's duet "Come What May" is another big one, destined, I think to be the next big wedding song, in the tradition of "Endless Love" - Huge song, wonderful arrangement/production. Ewan & Nicole's singing lessons paid off beautifully & they should be very proud. Ewan can easily segue into Big Broadway if he so chooses. Nicole is wonderful as well. The other songs, the samples, E & N doing Beatles AND Paul & Wings in ONE song is priceless !!! All else excellent, but I have highlighted the standouts. THIS CD WILL GROW ON YOU EACH TIME YOU LISTEN TO IT, AND ALL SONGS GEL TOGETHER SEAMLESSLY - HATS OFF TO BAZ, BECK, BOWIE, BONO, ETC...AND ENCORE TO THE 2 STARS OF THE MOVIE! NOTE TO BAZ: IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE SONGS IN THE VAULT, A LA' GLADIATOR 2, RUSH OUT AND GET IT MOVING AT ONCE !!!!

Free Music Review: Ranks up there with the great movie soundtracks
Hit: 5 Stars

I found the film "Moulin Rouge!" to be uneven, but ultimately very compelling and enjoyable. One of the best things about the film was its unbelievably diverse and daring musical soundtrack. The soundtrack CD, while incomplete, is superb. It's filled with excitement, palpable emotion, and great vocal and instrumental performances.

David Bowie opens the show on a somber note with "Nature Boy." This leads into the outrageous urban funkiness of "Lady Marmalade," performed with irresistible zest by the multicultural diva quartet of Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink. Also fun is Fatboy Slim's hyperactive "Because We Can." Other great selections include the tender, world-weary voice of Rufus Wainwright on the melancholy "Complainte de la Butte," and the freaky, beautiful "Hindi Sad Diamonds" (featuring Alka Yagnik).

But like the film, the CD really depends on the two leads: Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. They are outstanding. Kidman is fierce and sexy on "Sparkling Diamonds," romantic and authoritative on "One Day I'll Fly Away." McGregor is especially impressive on "Your Song" (featuring Alessandro Safina). Who would have thought that Obi-Wan Kenobi had such a fantastic singing voice? As excellent as Kidman is, I really think it is McGregor who gives both film and soundtrack their heart and soul.

When Kidman and McGregor come together on the "Elephant Love Medley," the most potent magic of the whole CD really becomes evident. This medley of segments from a diverse bunch of songs ("All You Need Is Love," "Don't Leave Me This Way," "Silly Love Songs," "I Will Always Love You," etc., etc.), combined with dialogue, showcases the chemistry these two performers shared. The "Medley" is ultimately a soaring, triumphant, even inspirational tour de force of arrangement and performance.

Yes, I loved the "Moulin Rouge!" soundtrack. I rank it right up there with such classic song soundtracks as "Purple Rain" and "Saturday Night Fever."

Free Music Review: Moulin Rouge Rocks!
Hit: 5 Stars

Firstly, let me say that I am reviewing this CD from Sydney, Australia....home of where "Moulin Rouge" was made (Fox Studios in Sydney). For well over a year now, anticipation for the release of Baz's new musical extravaganza has been at fever pitch here. Many of my friends worked on the film, and stories of what songs were being used in the film filtered through to me at various stages during production. I was dumb-founded at what I was hearing. What is Baz thinking? Will this movie work? Well, when the first single "Lady Marmalade" was released to the public recently, it shot straight to the Number 1 position on the Australian singles chart (and remains there at time of writing this review). The album was released two weeks later and is heading for the same position on the Australian album charts. It seems the Australian public is supporting "Moulin Rouge" all the way! And for good reason. This album is, in a word, fabulous! Can Nicole sing? YES! And she does a great rendition of "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" and "One Day I'll Fly Away". Can Ewan sing? YES! His version of "Your Song" is beautiful. In fact every track on this album is brilliant. Great vocals and great orchestrations. The version of "Roxanne" - performed as a tango - is amazing! I was fortunate enough to attend a "Moulin Rouge" production party late last year where Baz screened some scenes that were "in the can". Guys, we are in for a real treat! What I saw was mind-blowing. Putting the visuals I saw together with this soundtrack will make a true cinematic experience. I can't wait for the film to open here next week. It has box-office hit written all over it. Oh, and just to rub it in, I'm off to the Australian premiere and party of "Moulin Rouge" next Monday night....now that should be a real trip - like this album is! Enjoy!

Free Music Review: And above all, this is about the music...
Hit: 5 Stars

If you've been listening to the radio lately, you've probably heard the new version of "Lady Marmalade". Well, ladies and gents, that's just a tease...

I've been anxiously awaiting the premiere of Moulin Rouge since December and just by listening to the soundtrack, I can tell that Baz Luhrmann will not dissapoint. Hats off to Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor! They take all the iconic pop ballads and add their own dazzle and, dare I say, make them better! Kidman's breathless version of "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" with a dash of "Material Girl" is raunchy, bubbly and fun, while her cover of "One Day I'll Fly Away" can only be described as heartbreaking. Ewan McGregor has stolen my heart with his cover of Elton John's classic "Your Song." He has an amazing beautiful voice. Both stars make the love theme "Come What May" an instant hit, full of longing and passion. And the "Elephant Love Medley" will never be lived down - a mix of every soft-rock love ballad plus classic rock as a conversation ("All You Need is Love" + "I was made for loving you" + "One More Night" + Pride(in the name of love) + "Don't Leave Me this Way" + "Silly Love Songs" + "Up Where We Belong" + "Heroes" + "I Will Always Love You" + Your Song) YES, ALL THOSE SONGS IN ONE!

The disc is rounded out by David Bowie's dreamy-nightmare version of the Nat King Cole classic "Nature Boy" along with rock songs reinvited by Beck and Bono and a breathtaking tango version of "Roxanne". There's techno as well - Fatboy Slim's version of the can-can and a dangerously beautiful track called "Hindi Sad Diamonds".

Now I'm wishing this film came out tomorrow, but the most important thing is this album stands on it's own two feet - and can dance as well!
