Free Music Notes for Moulin RougeFree Music Review: Everybody can-can!!! Hit: 5 Stars
After hearing the soundtrack to "Moulin Rouge", I am very excited to see the film. I love a wide variety of music (you might call my taste "eclectic" or "all over the place"), so this album is right up my alley. On what other single disc can you enjoy standards, pop/rock, techno, soul and Indian-influenced sounds? My favorites are Fatboy Slim's insanely catchy "Because We Can", Nicole Kidman's fun and sassy "Sparkling Diamonds" (a combination of "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" and "Material Girl"), Ewan McGregor's lovely rendition of "Your Song", the entrancing "Hindi Sad Diamonds" and the "Elephant Love Medley". The last, a medley of ten love songs (from "All You Need is Love" to "I Will Always Love You" to "Up Where We Belong") manages to be both moving and campy at the same time. Despite the vocal stylings of Christina "I love the sound of my own voice" Aguilera, "Lady Marmalade" is fun, although I do prefer LaBelle's original version. Aguilera could take some lessons in sincere vocal delivery from Ewan McGregor. But, hey, if "Lady Marmalade" gets people to buy and listen to the whole album, I'm all for it. I've had this album for a week and can't stop listening to it. I played it for my parents and they loved it, too! There is truly something here for everyone. Buy it now...because you can-can-can!

Long live the musical. In a world where movies are now full of violence, big budget sci-fi, not to mention animation, along comes a movie that seems to have everything. I love musicals, and even if they're not your cup of tea, this movie will open your eyes to a new world, a world I thought lost forever. "Evita" is the last 'musical' to be released, and there was hardly any dialogue. But Moulin Rouge is full of suprprises! This CD is awesome in it's own right. David Bowie sings a haunting "Nature Boy", while the pop divas of the millenium sing a perfect remake of "Lady Marmalade." And you can't go wrong with Beck and Fatboy slim. But in all honesty, I have to admit, that if you buy this CD, you have to buy it to hear Ewan McGregor croon ballads. Nicole Kidman really impressed me with her singing voice, I was skeptic when I found out that she would be singing "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend/Material Girl." But she is incredible. And her duet with Ewan McGregor is THE most perfect marriage of harmony that I've heard in a long time. To me, the most beautiful song on this CD is "Your Song" by Ewan McGregor. His voice is truly intoxicating, as was his performance. If he released a CD, I'm sure it would sell. He has a certain Robbie Williams quality that just gets to you! This CD is brilliant. With so much music in the movie, I would not be surprised if they released a second part. Buy this CD! You won't be disappointed..
Free Music Review: 7 out of 8 Teens WEPT Hit: 5 Stars
After seeing "Moulin Rouge" in theaters yesterday, the songs from the movie have been irrevocably branded in my soul, much to my joy. This move is so wonderful, and all the songs are so perfect. For the nay-sayers who thought David Bowie's "Nature Boy" was a little too dry have obviously not seen the film. This is the beginning piece that basically introduces Ewan McGregor's character, Christian. It's superb, to say the least. Speaking of Ewan, THAT MAN HAS ONE SET OF PIPES!! Let me just say that all of my friends walked out of the theater wishing their beaus could belt out such gorgeous notes. He's fantastic, and the best male singer I've heard in a long time. Nicole was a HUGE HIT too. She's absolutley hypnotising in this movie, and her vocals for the soundtrack are PHENOMENAL! Usually, I cringe when actors try to sing in movies, but my expression while listening to her melodies was the antithesis of cringing. I have to say, too, that my absolute favorite song on this is "El Tango de Roxanne". This song "opened the flood gates", as they say. My other faves are "Hindi Sad Diamonds"(you'll love it if you love great Indian music), "Come What May" (for all you hopeless romantics out there!) and "Because We Can" (if you keep still while listening to this song, check your pulse--you may be dead). All in all, this is a wonderful cd, with talent gushing out of it's plastic case.
Free Music Review: WARNING: This is stuff is addictive Hit: 5 Stars
I was told this soundtrack was pretty awful, but I started with one song "Elephant Love Medley" off Napster and feverishly moved on to every other song, and found that I not only liked the singing of the actors, but found the "old" music new and beautiful. Then I had to get the CD. First song sets the dizzying, tragic, and all in all colorful tone. David Bowie's "Nature Boy", presented with Ewan McGregor's grief stricken monologue, is the epitamy of haunting, and the last unexpected note sent me into full fledged chills. The various character sung songs are great: "Elephant Love Medley" is one of the best, incredibly captivating, and at times seems like it's own song; "Come What May" is gorgeously done; "Your Song" all revamped ballad style with McGregor's simple and energetic chords and beautiful orchestrations; Kidman's "One Day I'll Fly Away" is, in total, precursor to the rest of the tragedy to follow. Kidman can sing...; "Hindi Sad Diamonds" is a romp and buzzes with the energy that is the Moulin Rouge; "Diamonds" is breathy and so so... The various rock songs on here are fitting and although I don't like them as much, I find that the sheer ingenuity of the soundtrack for the movie works perfectly with the movie and for pure listening purposes. It's a beautiful collaboration of music and I find it uncommonly and strangely addictive for a film soundtrack.
Free Music Review: Hopefully Only Part One Hit: 5 Stars
I was waiting to see Moulin Rouge since March, I think. Having finally seen it, I was not disappointed at all; all my expectations have been fulfilled by the flic. The soundtrack, to say the least, is spectacular! Again, Baz Luhrmann shows us that a good movie doesn't need just good actors and a good script, but also excellent production design and music in order to make it a great experience. Both Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor sing with strong, consistent, and beautiful voices in their love duets "Elephant Love Medley" and "Come What May." Alone, Kidman is just as convincing a singer, as we hear in several Moulin Rouge production scenes as well as the beautiful remake "One Day I'll Fly Away." McGregor is an excellent person to sing Elton John's "Your Song" and co-star in "El Tango de Roxanne." Now comes the only disappointment: All songs on this album are covers of previously released and popular material as well as songs written for the soundtrack that were never actually intended to be in the movie, save the redone version of "Nature Boy" by David Bowie. The movie features some more excellent music, like "Zidler's Rap," the proposal of Toulouse-Lautrec's musical "Spectacular, Spectacular!" and more. Hopefully, Luhrmann and Fox are already working on a "Romeo + Juliet" like Volume Two of the soundtrack, filled entirely with original score by Craig Armstrong and songs originally written for and performed in the movie. Buy it!
