Free Music Notes for Mr BungleFree Music Review: One that I can't part with Hit: 5 Stars
This is an all-time favorite of mine that I keep coming back to, no matter what phase I may be going through at the time. Way back when I first heard it (the year escapes me), I didn't know whether to $#!* or go blind. What, at first, will sound like a mixed bag of weird sounds, death-metal, polka, thrashing, circus music, 80s video game sound effects, and Mike Pattons crooning/screaming will eventually all come together and most likely, hold a different meaning to every individual who will take the time to hear it out. The payoff is a truly unique and fun experience for the patient listener. Much like Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" (with a lot more melody, of course), it's not something that you will EVER hear on the radio, nor will you hear any of their tunes at your local dance club. Yeah, Mike Patton's a genius and if you're a Faith No More fan looking for further evidence of this, then you are quite simply a fool...just kidding, but check into the equally good "California". That one's a lot more tuneful, but all the things that made this album great are still evident. Also pick up "Freak Out" by The Mothers of Invention (the grandaddy of them all) and you will NOT be sorry.
If you don't own this by now, PLEASE find a copy. Once you absorb it, you will never be the same.
Free Music Review: A test for your mind and ears Hit: 5 Stars
Mike Patton reunites with his old band mates and puts out a records so left wing and weird that after you hear it for the first time you'll never look at music the same way. Don't think aobut whether this album is overrated after the first listen. Don't worry if the music doesn't grab you. In fact if you're not in the mood to hear it, don't play it. Then one day, you'll remember a part of a song off this album like in My ass is one fire where Patton repeats redundant over and over, and you'll remember that you have this album. Now don't force yourself to listen to it. If your mind and ears can't take it for a few months don't worry, this record only gets sweeter with age. If there is one record that will truly test you, that will annoy ...you then this it! Underneath all the weird sounds and saxophones, lies the true beauty of this album. Any Mr. Bungle is a challenging experience. Beware: it will take some time to apreciate this album, but when you do every listen is a rewarding experience. Discovering Mr. Bunlgle is sort of like throwing yourself into a mud puddle of new sounds and styles of music. It's seems like a very cluttered record, but when you learn to apreciate this work of art, it will seem as clear as bottled water.
Free Music Review: ska, rap, metal, jazz, and crude humor equals perfection Hit: 5 Stars
I was first turned on to this album in 1992 by a friend who listened to punk rock. This fit nowhere in his record collection, alongside his Dead Kennedys and Exploited albums, yet it made complete sense once I listened to it: it's more punk than any of those old hardcore bands because Mr. Bungle truely doesn't try to be what anyone expected them to be. Organs, metal guitars, a brass section, and some damn funny lyrics made this album not only stand out as completely unique, but considering it was released by Warner Bros., it was by far the least commercial album released by anyone for many years before and after, meaning that they truely released art, not something targeted at a specific demographic, not another quick-signing to cash in on the grunge movement (this WAS released in 1991), and not even an attempt to sell records due to Faith No More's populartiy at the time, since Mike Patton's name was nowhere on the record, yet his voice is unmistakeable. No hit singles, no radio airplay, this one sold only by listening to it at a friend's house then going out and buying it yourself; luckily, there were plenty of friends who turned on other friends, as Mr. Bungle released two other albums so far, which are both equally as good as their debut here.
Free Music Review: Travolta Hit: 5 Stars
Mr Bungle is an album that _really_ is like no other. Heres a brief attempt at translating the music into words. Imagine entering a dark alley on your journey home one night only to be accosted by two homicidal clowns with accordions singing Billy Idol's entire back catalogue, and rhythmically sharpening their knives. You turn to flee, only to be transported to the kind of carnival that only exists in your nightmares, in which a group of schizophrenic and dangerous eggs tie you to a carousel and demand you name all your childhood pets in order of their demise, giving time place and cause of death. Upon your inevitable failure, all your pornographic fantasies simultaneously come true, causing all the problems that might imply. And so on. More a kind of twisted musical expeiment than an album, Mr Bungle seem to wish to cause their listeners as much trouble as possible. They certainly dont compromise here, as they run through every style and genre imgainble, and tread themes other band wouldnt touch in their dreams. This album cries out to be bought if you like a musical challenge. Its dangerous in there though, so bring patience, impartiality, cunning and plenty of balloons. I hope you enjoy this incredible record.
Free Music Review: Favorite album EVER!! Hit: 5 Stars
I'll just start by saying this is my favorite album of all time. And that's saying a lot, seeing as I own almost 1800 cd's. I remember the amazing day I saw this CD in a music store many years ago. I had heard that Mike Patton had another group, but he was (and is) such an idol of mine, I just couldn't believe I would be so lucky. I bought it, took it home, and listened as Patton's voice flew out of my speakers. But this wasn't a normal CD by any standards. It was like nothing I had ever heard. It was almost hard to comprehend. It was psychotic circus music with amzingly diversified vocals. By my third listen, I realized I was listening to genius. Today, Faith No more is...no more. But Mike Patton is a part of four different groups. I have yet to hear Tomahawk or Peeping Tom. Fantomas is great, and every little thing related to Patton throughout the years has been amazing. But Mr. Bungle remains to this day one of my top three favorite groups. And this CD, their first major release, remains my favorite album of all time. Even almost 10 years later, I continue to find new sounds and wonders in all the songs. I hope everyone out there owns this CD. If not, go straight to the checkout and order it, ...
