Free Music Notes for Mr BungleFree Music Review: Too wierd NOT to like Hit: 5 Stars
Yeah, the title pretty much sums it up. Mr Bungle are one of those genuinely unique bands that is capable of doing something totally different (and pretty bizarre) without turning it into an incomprehensible mash of noise. Transitions between musical styles are frequent, interesting, and well executed. Amazingly, this band seems to be able to play jazz, swing, rock, pop, and a variety of other musical styles with equally admirable proficiency.
I I considered giving this album a 4/5 because some listeners will find the blend of styles rather hard to digest. For my own tastes, though, I cannot in good conscience give Mr Bungle anything lower than a 5.
If you are a music fan with eclectic tastes and the desire for something new, I'd highly recommend this, and, for a somewhat more polished Bungle sound, their album California as well.
Free Music Review: An intellectual, musical, mathematical feast. Hit: 5 Stars
I first purchased this on cassette in 1993. It was a genre of music to which I was certainly not accustomed. However, the lyrics themselves (when they had been discerned) show a certain intellectual artistic quality whose influence could be attributed to some of the darker sides of human behavior and in some cases, the not-so-lighter sides of life itself. It is definitely obvious that the artist has a sense of humor that fits well within the confines of his work. The music itself is quite harmonic at some points, yet discordant at others. It is actually quite refreshing because even during a particular piece, each distinct portion of the music is excellent. It is almost as if one is listening to "music within music". If you want something new and refreshing, yet bold and controversial, this is the CD to acquire.
Free Music Review: Preaching to the per/con-verted Hit: 5 Stars
You don't need to tell the average [person] about Mr Bunghole, they know. Or rather you know. Sure this is an awesome album. Just take your favorite naturally occuring stimulant and turn it up. My only beef is that this album turns open minded people into fanatics. Kinda like Zappa in the 60's and 70's. Of course we fans of the world's greatest Jedi band are better than the Britney Spears/Creed/Dave Matthews [imitations]. But for music to truly improve, we need to become better than the Mr Bungle [imitations]. So pick up an instrument. It's easier than you think. I can play most of the guitar stuff on this album. And if I can do it so can you! As the Dalai Lama says, "Be the change you want to see in the world". Otherwise, you have NO right to complain about the state of music. Or anything else. This, my friends, is democracy.
Free Music Review: This blows away all other forms of music! Hit: 5 Stars
Imagine if Frank Zappa composed eclectic songs mixing funk, metal, and hip hop, and then had it performed by a satanic clan of circus clowns. That should give you an idea of what to expect from Mr.Bungle, perhaps the most innovative rock band of the 90s. Of coarse you have to be open minded to really enjoy it,because Bungle doesn't keep their song structures to just one style. One minute it's deathly screaming and thrashing guitar, then it's soulful funk crooning and John Zorn style horn playing the next, then tribal drums and war cries, then it's a sample of a nintendo game, and that's just one song. Also Bungle has a rather gross sense of humour e.g. Squeeze me Macoroni, The Girls of Porn. But do your really expect a band as abnormal as this to sing about normal stuff. Anyways, go buy the album, trust me, you won't be sorry.
Free Music Review: Greatest album of the 1990's!! Hit: 5 Stars
Mr. Bungle created a masterpiece with this album and that's all there is to it. I heard Disco Volante first and thought it was brilliant. Then I discovered that they had another album out, this one. When I first heard it I was blown away! The album artwork was already tripping me out but when the music started matching it I was completely amazed. These guys are trully talented to be able to switch so many styles in just one song. From Metal to Ska to Rap to Punk to Jazz, i don't know how they do it. My favorite song here has to be "Carrousel" for how it starts all cheery and ends in a sinister tone. The only other album I can think of that blended so many different styles is "brujerias" from the Mexican band Victimas Del Doctor Cerebro. But it didn't come close to this one.
