Free Music Review: Not Their Best, But Still Pretty Good

Being a huge metal/rock fan, I have always taken pride in listening to relatively unknown and obscure bands, examples would be bands like: Better Left Unsaid, Neaera, Antagonist, Antagonist A.D, Scarve, CassoVita, Burning Human, and One Way Mirror along with many others. However, there are some bands within the mainstream musical world who I simply cannot get enough of, and Mudvayne is one of them. Mudvayne has never disappointed with any of their albums, despite their ever changing sound and image throughout the years.
Regarded as a much "softer" and "mainstream friendly" band than when they initially debuted nationally with L.D. 50 back in 2000, Mudvayne continues to progress and mature with each new release. Each sequential album in their discography continues to develop the band's sound, taking on new forms of instrumental and vocal work, making each new release an entirely different listening experience than past albums released beforehand.
"The New Game" is often regarded as the band's worst album to date. Many fans and critics alike take notice of the softer, slower melody and riffs with each track found on "The New Game" as well as the much softer vocal style of Chad Gray when compared to past albums such as "L.D. 50" or "The End of All Things to Come". Mudvayne continues to show hints of their old form throughout "The New Game", but the album is not as heavy or fast as the band's first two national releases were. Does this mean that "The New Game" is an instant flop? Of course not.
There is still plenty to be found on the album for even the most die hard of Mudvayne fans. It is true that Chad has indeed toned down his style over the years, and the riffs have become much slower and easier to listen to, but the band still stands head and shoulders above many of their mainstream metal counterparts that can be found these days. "The New Game" shows that Mudvayne can still return to form when needed, with tracks such as "Fish Out of Water", "The Hate in Me", and "Dull Boy" utilizing a high count of classic Mudvayne screams, many of which Chad holds for several seconds on end, showcasing his classic form once again.
The tracks range from hard hitting, semi-heavy songs with high pitched screams that Mudvayne fans are used to hearing, to much slower, calmer songs with Chad Gray singing cleanly the entire track length. Songs like "Dull Boy", "A New Game" and "Fish Out of Water" resembl tracks found on "The End of All Things to Come" since they utilize Chad's traditional screams associated with Mudvayne. Greg's guitar work is spot on, reminiscent of classic Mudvayne tracks, utilizing riff structures similar to past iterations of the band. Ryan has always been one of the few bassists who can actually be heard playing in the majority of a band's tracks, his style and sound have always been consistent throughout the years, and he truly adds a new dimension to Mudvayne's sound on "The New Game". Matt's drumwork is superb, but does not measure up to the high quality of patterns and footwork he showcases on Mudvayne's self titled album released in 2009, but it remains solid, utilizing great time signatures, along with a wide range of cymbals and tom fills throughout the entire album.
Despite the fact that the majority of the album is much slower and consists of slower riffs and more clean sung vocals than past releases (due to tracks like "Have It Your Way" and "Cinderella's Story"), "The New Game" is not what most Mudvayne fans will expect to hear from the band when compared to what they've done in the past. However, the album is still top notch in its own rights, and contributes a new, unique sound and spin on what Mudvayne has contributed to the metal genre. "The New Game" is worth a listen if you're a fan of Mudvayne, but it may take some time to grow on the listener, but it's a definite joy to the ears to hear the wide range of sounds the album brings forth with each track.
