Free Music Review: Psychobilly Standard

Murderland sure as heck isn't doing anything that other psycho-punks haven't done before - not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but the psychobilly scene is rather becoming a copy of itself, as bands like this use the same basic formula over and over and over again. I'm all for it, to a certain point, but I -do- prefer it when bands like Koffin Kats at least pop a little originality in there and deviate from the same old chord progressions once in a while. And if you can't be original, at least be ferocious, like the aforementioned Kats or The Quakes or the dozens of other bands that bring the fire a bit more than Murderland seems willing to do...
That said, Murderland's 'Lights Out' is a brief blast of bubbly, agreeable graveyard punk - if you absolutely cannot get enough of that psycho-sound, then Murderland will fit right in - - as filler, anyway. My suggested tracks off this disc would be 'Transylvanian Vacation' & "October Sky', since they evoke a light-hearted kind of '50s pop sound. The rest of the cuts, few as they are, all just ran together in a quick, crunchy blur.
'Lights Out' - not a waste, but not particularly memorable, either, and certainly not something that will ever be credited for advancing the psychobilly genre. Of course, you don't have to have a vested interest in psychobilly to regard Murderland as just another band treading on familiar ground - 'Lights Out' might also appeal to those who like NOFX as well, as long as you don't mind the fact that Murderland is far less clever. It's a safe listen all around, and if you get bored with it, well hey - at least it's short.
