Free Music Review: See these guys live...
Hit: 5 Stars

As I said in my other review for their 'Absolution' CD, to really appreciate Muse you have to see them live. This CD tends to go a little more experimental then 'Absolution' but the experiment pays off.

It really sounds like they really took a lot more influence in this CD, playing songs that sound like took some sonic lessons from Queen, Led Zeppelin, U2 among others. When Muse rocks, they rock hard. I have to say aside from my Arcade Fire CDs, this is one of the recently bought CDs that I have listened to front to back. I can't say that about a good majority of my CDs, let alone ones I have bought in the last two years. Let's go over the track list and my individual track ratings:

1. Take A Bow - (4/5)
2. Starlight - (5/5)(my second favorite track on this disc)
3. Supermassive Black Hole - (5/5)(My favorite track on this disc)
4. Map Of The Problematique - (5/5)
5. Soldier's Poem - (4/5)
6. Invincible - (5/5)
7. Assasin - (5/5)
8. Exo-Politics - (4/5)
9. City Of Delusion - (5/5)
10. Hoodoo - (4/5)
11. Knights Of Cydonia - (5/5)

So as you can see, I really, really enjoyed this disc. Again, Muse is one of the bands I sort of discovered by listening to the radio, I bought their CDs, then saw them live, and now I absolutely love Muse. If you love your rock a little experimental, loud, soft and sonic all at the same time, get this CD, pickup the other Muse CDs, and by all means go see these guys live.

Free Music Review: Another killer album from the UK's finest!
Hit: 5 Stars

Muse may never escape the "next Radiohead" stigma, but that has not stopped them from evolving as a band, and let's face it, they are now closer to being the "old Radiohead" than Radiohead themselves. This has been cemented over the past three albums, all of which have been fantastic, and "Black Holes and Revelations" marks their most accomplished work to date.

Their last album, "Absolution," pushed their bombastic and apocalyptic sound to the Nth degree, which made for an exciting and wildly unpredictable listen the first spin. "Black Holes..." is clearly more dancy and eclectic, banking on synthesizers and distorted guitars to produce a sound that is mixes Muse's trademark sound with that of classic New Order. The first single " Supermassive Black Hole" is a great example of this new sound, while "Map of the Problematique," "Knights of Cydonia," and "Assasin" are all great floor-fillers. Having said that, Muse's strength on this album is their slower, more melodic tracks. The forthcoming single "Starlight" is an absolute masterpiece, and great accompanying tracks like "Invincible" and "Hoodoo" would have made excellent Jeff Buckley songs.

Being a huge fan of Muse, a new album from them is always an exciting prospect, and I have yet to be disappointed. While still only known in selective circles in Canada, I imagine that "Black Holes and Revelations" will push their stock up even further. For people new to the band, this is the best place to start.

Free Music Review: One More Step Up
Hit: 5 Stars

Harnessing the talent that they have always had yet never fully controled, Muse has taken a giant leap beyond what Black Holes could have been (Absolution Part 2) and created a sound that rock legends would be proud to call their own and belongs uniquely to the trio from Teignmouth. In every track singer/songwriter Bellamy displays his increasing mastery over his falsetto voice in both ending the harsh tones of his earliest years and displaying a range that walks from the highest, most energetic pitches to the lower, more solid part of the register. To compliment his increased vocal talent Bellamy's writing has not only crafted a new world for the listener to explore, but one that has its roots firmly planted in our own. Bassist Wolstenholm and Drummer Howard demonstrate their own learned lessons and apply them effectively to round out a three-piece that plays with more sound than most five-pieces. Built upon are the base lines that made listeners tune into Absolution so that now they bend into everything from hard-rock power lines to tech-disco-stomp foundations. The percussion has found its full meaning on this album with Howard pressing the beat and operating as a real entity instead of just a fill between phrases.

To be honest, Black Holes and Revelations is a tough listen if one approaches looking for Absolution B-sides. But past that, this fourth effort from Muse is straight money.

Free Music Review: supermassive success
Hit: 5 Stars

i have to admit i've never been a big fanatic of muse i like some of their old singles but never ventured into buying any of their albums until now that is. when i first heard "supeermassive black holes" i was hooked by the style of the singing and the electro hardened beat and the pure class of the lyrics.
so i've finally got the album today and i wasn't disappointed
i read some of the neagtive reviews on here and uk amazon site
and i wasn't put off from not buying it. as i had a feel i knew i would like the album.
yeah it may sound abit "clean" as you say. but the quality
of the band as an unit is mesmerising.
this review isn't a biased review as i said i'm not a fan of muse.
but their new sound a great departure from "absolution"
didn't put me off as stated by some die hard fans which i throughly agree with bc if i was a die hard fan i would of been taken aback by the dramatic sound of "black holes and revelations"

out of the eleven tracks here i love ten.
the only track that i haven't warmed to yet is "hoodoo"
but as some people comment the tracks that you don't like instantly are the ones that capture you the most as i must concur that has happen to me before so i'll give it another try and get into the dynamics of the song.

but as a concept that muse has plunged itself head first in the deep end it's a success. that needs to listened too again.

Nine times out of ten, when you buy a CD on the strength of one song you heard on the radio, you're gonna get burned. In this case the purchase worked out, and the remarkable virtuosity of Muse was laid before me. Where do I begin? Muse sounds like... well, who hasn't been mentioned yet? I'll tell you who, System of a Down is in there, alongside the barrage we've already heard; Radiohead, Queen, ELO, and reportedly Rush, though I'm yet to detect it. Yes, I did catch the classical music references, and- somebody stop me- did I actually hear a Theremin in there, or is it just particularly ethereal and bizarre keyboard work?

Let's face it, Muse is their own band doing their own thing. Music, writing- art in general- is a cannibalistic enterprise that borrows from what has gone before. What is important is building on what has been done previously, and Muse has constructed a musical castle on the foundations laid by others. Sometimes you think a song is promising more than it can deliver, starting with duelling Latin guitars and a clog dance, yet somehow building on that theme to deliver rock opera of the likes unheard since Meatloaf and Queen. Not to be stranded in a genre, Muse deftly slides into a Depeche Mode beat, dance-trance psychedelics for a backdrop, or the sound of Prince in his heyday.

Muse is quite simply their own band with their own sound, and they have to be heard to be believed.
