Free Music Notes for Black Holes & Revelations

Free Music Review: Epic!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have tried, but I cannot even begin to fathom the negative reviews of this album. I think the problem lies within Absolution's past success. Too many people expected Black Holes & Revelations to mirror Absolution. If you're buying this album and are expecting to find Absolution pt. 2, you will have a rude awakening. This album is 100% different than anything Muse has ever done, but is nothing less than mind-shattering. This CD is of epic proportions. I saw them live on Friday in Philadelphia and all iffy feelings towards this CD were shattered. It scares me when a band creates something of this caliber because it makes me wonder if it can be surpassed. This album has a sound which resembles Radiohead meets Queen touched with Muse's finesse. It's incredible.

Lyrically, I have never heard anything more powerful. The lyrics are a desperate cry for our times, and scream of the political strife in our world. I own CD's of bands whose goal is political awareness, and none compare to what this CD has accomplished. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD.

My favorite tracks are:

2. Starlight
4. Map of the Problematique
6. Invincible
9. City of Delusion
10. Hoodoo
11. Knights of Cydonia

Free Music Review: Worthy of Praise

Muse always impresses me. This is some of the most original, creative rock music out there on the scene today. Matt Bellamy is one of the most talented vocalists on the modern rock scene right now. He uses so many timbres and textures with his voice. The music pulls from so many different influences. While there are obvious touches of Radiohead in the music, the songs rock a lot harder than Radiohead ever does. You can hear influences of classical, latin, classic rock and industrial/techno styles. The result is an amazing product with something huge to offer.

The music is incredibly dynamic. The opening track, "Take a Bow" builds to an incredible apex of sound. The music is tinged with electronic garneshes of color. The thick arrangements are so well put together and every instrument fits into a beatiful picture. There are many great moments on this album, like the explosive drumming on "Assassin," the latin-esque trumpeting and acoustic guitar in "City of Delusion," the stunning piano work on "Hoodoo," and the breathtaking overdubbed harmonies in the epic closing track "Knights of Cydonia."

This album is quite amazing. A wonderful addition to Muse's diverse catalog of exciting music.

Take a Bow is epic, it is like watching a star being born. The lyrics are still timely, which is distressing when you realize it came out several years ago. I love how the song builds and unfolds on itself. Starlight is driven and sonic, a beautiful song with a powerful beat and strong piano. Supermassive Black Hole is sexy. I don't care what anyone has to say about it being cheesey or whatever. It is a very sexy song, the layers of bass line are fantastic, and Matt's vocals are as fluid as ever. Map of the Problematique is like a classic Muse song, it would easily fit on Absolution. Soldier's Poem is just heartbreaking in it's truth. Yes, 'it is a shame we're all dying. How could you send us so far away from home? There is no justice in the world, and there never was'. Amen, Matt. Assassin is throbbing and pounding, with kick butt guitar, with a message of revolution. Knights of Cydonia is my favorite. It just builds and builds to guitar god heaven. I simply can't listen to it though without thinking of the video with the galloping horse and the space cowboys! I can barely contain myself until September 15th, when we will have more MUSE at last!

Free Music Review: Darker, Different, and Spectacular
Hit: 5 Stars

I became a fan of Muse since I heard the singles off of Absolution and slowly built up a discography of them. I have every full length album they've put out and a punch of the singles. BH & R is by far the best.
The tracks, taken by themselves, are masterful. They are musically complex, lyrically brilliant, and have a certain dark epic-ness to them, like they should be played at the end of the world.
When taken as a continuous album, BH & R is the greatest musical achievements of the new millennium.
If I had to pick the best tracks off of the album, they'd be Map of the Problematique, Starlight, and Knights of Cydonia. I truly believe that Knights of Cydonia will be my generations Bohemian Rhapsody. Listen to it, you know I'm right.
Map of the Problematique is simply a great song. It reflects on the world at large in an incredibly entertaining and deep style. It also has this certain indescribable pull to it. You should definitely also pick up the Does it Offend You, Yeah? remix of it.
Muse is a meaningful, relevant, slightly dark, brilliant band and this is their best effort so far.

Free Music Review: Overall This is a Great Album
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Muse's fourth album release and I have always loved their music. They haven't achieved great commercial success, but are popular in the more underground/indie scene, which fits them nicely. Their last release was in 2003 titled Absolution and was a great album. This album opens with singer/frontman Matt Bellamy screaming in a strong way "You will burn in hell for your sins/You must pay for your crimes against the earth" mixed over the electronic/pop/indie style that if you're a previous fan than you still will be.

If this is your first time hearing their material, than hopefully it'll win you over. They have perfected writing great indie/progressive rock with a pop sense. "Starlight" is a type of love song (don't worry it's not in a cheesy way) and "Supermassive Black Hole" is an interesting mix of heavy, disco, booty shaker style. Muse is influenced by a variety of different bands, one being Queen, which you can hear in some of the songs. The songs here are deep, political and overall great.
