Great lyric line, right? Don't blame me; it's from 'Shapeshifter'....I have always faulted the rating system b/c very few people who dislike a CD are going to spend the time to critique it. So if you look at all the CDs, 80% have four stars or above; the only people who rate CDs are the ones who love the band. The sample distribution is skewered, but that's another post all together. To get to the disc: yeah, I ranked it as low as possible. Granted, I am biased; I didn't like Kay Hanley in Letters to Cleo. As a matter of fact I really didn't like Letters to Cleo. I was hoping that b/c Matthew Sweet was associated with this disc it might work, but alas it didn't. This disc is pure bubble-gum indie-pop. Some power guitars, some hooks, some easily memorized choruses.... But listen to the disc. It's all been done before. Let me tell you where you have heard this before: 10 Things I Hate About You soundtrack, Never Been Kissed soundtrack, Get Over It soundtrack...the list just keeps going. Funny that they are all soundtracks - well, not really...that's modus operandi these days in making a teen flick. On to the actual songs: tracks like "Pretend to Be Nice" and "Three Small Words" are the usual fair these days. They'll get some radio play, might end up being the song of the month on your local radio station and then as quickly as they come, they go. Why? Because there is nothing to them...they are made up of trite lyrics that mean nothing, e.g. `la la la la la la la la yeaaaaahh!' - that's the genius chorus of "Spin Around." "You Don't See Me" sounds like it was taken straight from some hormone-addled teen's diary. It's nice that all the lines rhyme and that they figured out a way to get a little acoustic styled lovelorn ballad on the disc, but it reeks of marketing. Don't get me wrong; I am certain that this disk will sell well. If American Hi-Fi, SR-71, Wheatus, et al can have hits, why not Kay in her new little band? But if you are looking for substance...keep on moving. This disc will be forgotten as quickly as the movie - prolly next month at the latest.
