Free Music Review: I'm Really Luvin' Musiq On This One: His Best Yet

Musiq has been an artist who I have kept my eyes on since his debut. I have enjoyed many of his singles, and as a result of those singles and my respect for him, I have scraped up over the years the money to buy all 3 of his first releases. While quality, most of them have been hit-or-miss as a whole for me. I took a chance getting this only hearing the first hit B.U.D.D.Y., and I have been glad that I got it.
B.U.D.D.Y.--Produced by Lab Ratz and Karma, Musiq's lead single which made it to #2 on the Billboard R&B charts, this mid-tempo is reminiscent of Just Friends (Sunny) from his debut but with an updated, more mature flair. A
Ms. Philadelphia--Produced by "Sauce" & Musiq, this New Jack-like, poetic mid-tempo is my favorite song on the CD. I love the way it's arranged. The lyrics are strong, and it's just a nice song overall. The minute I heard this cut I knew I was sold on the CD. A+
Teachme--Produced by Orthodox & Ransum, 2nd single, which made it to #2 on R&B charts, this genuine, heartfelt love song about teaching one to love is one of the best hits of '07. A
Betterman--Produced by Raphael Saadiq and Jake and The Phatman, this song also has that New Jack feel to it meets 2007. I like the lyrics. The B-Section is great. The chorus is tight. The keys that frame the instrumental melody of the song make this a standout. A
Thequestions--Produced by Musiq and Neff-U, I like this song, but this simple, slow song does nothing. Lyrically, it's strong, but it's one of those ones where if you heard it a few times, it's enough. B
Today--Produced by The Underdogs, this slow jam should've been the 3rd single. It's arranged well and the chorus is infectious. It's a nice neo-soul piece. A+
Makeyouhappy--Produced by Baby Dubb, I usually avoid this hand-clapping up-tempo. It's a nice song on the CD, but it does absolutely nothing for me especially compared to the songs surrounding it. B-
Ridiculous--Produced by Baby Dubb, this is weird because it's produced by the same person as Makeyouhappy, and it's also an uptempo, but it works WAY better than Makyouhappy. It has just the right instrumentation and vocals to make it a song you want to just bob your head to and to get into the song. A
Millionaire--Produced by Neff-U and Harold Lilly, this mid-tempo is another one of my faves on the CD. It's slightly corny lyrically, but it's a catchy, hooky song with some cool background vocals. It definitely fits the CD. A+
Takeyouthere--Produced by Baby Dubb, here Musiq is trying to channel those old vets of the field who sing those dreamy, R&B slow jams effortlessly. While he does a great job and the song sounds great, it's not as believable because it doesn't totally fit him. B
Lullaby--Produced by Lab Ratz & Karma, this mid-tempo is slightly reminiscent of the song before. It is another slower, soul cut talking about love, but something about it is more catchy and just works better. A-
Greatestlove--Produced by Baby Dubb, I usually skip this one because it's not one of my favorite songs for some reason. C
Overall, this has been one of my favorite CDs of 2007 that I have played repeatedly. Musiq has chosen a great CD comprehensively. I just wish the CD would've met even more commercial success...It should be Platinum like his first 2.

flexfield5As the title of this CD demonstrates, Musiq Soulchild is no fan of wasted space: Luvanmusiq is a brief disc, but its breezy neo-soul grooves and elegant slow jams stack up so tightly it's a wonder you don't hear squeaks as the disc moves from song to song. First track "B.U.D.D.Y.," which borrows from Ini Kamoze's "Here Comes the Hot Stepper" (which borrowed from Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat" before it), thumps along with the kind of out-there spirit that'll make you wish for a return to Maxwell's urban hang suite, circa 1996; "Ms. Philadelphia," co-written by Ne-Yo, sets the mood for cocktail-sipping urban sophisticates; and "Betterman" starts with a Justin Timberlake-reminiscent beat but settles into its own warm bath of sincerity. Soulchild's songs play like personal letters--you want to open them alone, then share the best ones with best friends. Notably, that's the way you feel after hearing any of Soulchild's discs--Luvanmusiq is only the latest evidence that the man is comfortable in his R&B- and soul-saturated skin. --Tammy La Gorce
