Free Music Review: Exemplary musicians, beautiful writing

This album was just the beginning of a beautiful collaboration between Glen Phillips, a songwriter/singer who is enormously talented and generally under appreciated, and the powerhouse musicians that make-up Nickel Creek. From the hilarious and spontaneous "Think About Your Troubles" to the original MAS song "Comes A Time" which captures the best of Phillips voice and lyric with the softer, gentler and more subtle musical details that Nickel Creek brings to the table. "Toad" fans may miss Phillips' usual bend towards rock, but his voice and writing mixes with the fiddle and mandolin with no hint of incongruity. However, whether or not you've ever heard a song by "Toad the Wet Sprocket" I can't imagine anyone who would be able to ignore the perfect beauty of "Windmills" found on this disc. The song "Be Careful" also stretches the boundaries of both folk and rock with syncopated "riffs" on all instruments admidst an unusually dense chord progression. This album is a mature, genre-bending collaboration. It is beautiful and I recommend it without reservation!

This collaboration between former Toad the Wet Sprocket front man Glen Phillips and Nickel Creek's Sean and Sara Watkins and Chris Thile was rehearsed and recorded in six days in 2000 and is the result of a true mutual admiration between the parties. Some of the eight originals bear a connection with Phillips's erstwhile band, especially a song like "Somewhere Out There" with its lilting rhythms and dreamily atmospheric chordal structure. What's most telling is the breadth that this new context allows him as a songwriter. The rootsy Americana, subtle voicings, and front-porch settings seem hundreds of miles from the more urban character of Toad. It's nice to see Nilsson's "Think About Your Troubles," one of a handful of covers, emerging as a contemporary standard in new acoustic circles (having also been released this year in a version by the Asylum Street Spankers). MAS's version of Jon Brion's "Trouble" shows the ease with which these players blend pop sensibilities with the resilience of tradition. --David GreenbergerPop Music CDs
