Free Music Review: Satisfying all your urges...
Hit: 5 Stars

My Morning Jacket have established themselves as one of the most talented and distinctive rock bands out there today, and with their latest album they've pushed their already compelling sound even further. Here, the band employs a wide array of different sounds, textures, and genres, and adroitly whip them all together into what I consider to be hands down the best album of the past year.

The band starts out slow with the smooth melodies of the title track, which builds into triumphant guitar riffs by the end. From there, the band whips out "Highly Suspicious", with its bizarre offbeat funk metal rhythms and almost ludicrous falsetto vocals. The album keeps you on your toes throughout, from the southern rock of "I'm Amazed", to the more straight-forward rockers like "Remnants" and "Aluminum Park", to the oldschool country of "Sec Walkin", to the 60's pop hooks of "Two Halves", to the gentle folk acoustics of "Librarian". "Touch Me, I'm Going to Scream", is a 2-part epic that employs more progressive elements with some tasteful electronics thrown in as well (part 2 also has an Omnichord, which is something you definitely don't see every day). The album ends with "Good Intentions", which is pretty much just a 4-second burst of noise, which somehow ends up making much more sense than it perhaps probably should. A fitting conclusion to such an insanely brilliant musical experience.

All that said, descriptions really fail at encapsulating what these guys do. Imagine Wilco, Neil Young, the Allman Brothers, Mike Patton, Glenn Campbell, and Buddy Holly all participating in one big psychotic jam, and maybe you have some idea. Or maybe not. It's just a perfect balance of being both catchy and accessible, but still experimental and interesting. Most of my favorite artists are people who take a lot of elements that theoretically shouldn't go together but somehow still do, and that describes this album perfectly.

Definitely a must-have.

Free Music Review: Best album since 2002's Yoshimi, maybe.
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is amazing on so many different levels, and because of the well-crafted exploration of so many different styles and genres I have to give this my nod for album of the year(so far), and the best thing I've heard since 02's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. In some ways, this album might be even better because of the interesting blend of different styles of music, but yet there is still an overall universal message of connectivity, and like Yoshimi, it is a beautiful adventure.

It might take a few listens for a lot of people to see how cohesive this album actually is, but after a few spins I found that the songs, as different as they are from one another, somehow come together to form one majestic, fearless album. Like all of their other albums, the lyrics are also special in the sense that there can be multiple meanings to almost every line, so every person can take something from it and connect it to their own reality.

Let me suggest that you play this album properly before you try to dismiss it. Play it as loud as possible to get the full effect of all the sounds and perfect percussion. There is a lot going on in this album, and it is made only for those who want to be challenged. I've heard a lot of fans say they were disappointed after their first listen, but then came acceptance and then after several listens the glory of this album was finally revealed. I personally skipped most of these stages by getting really high before my first listen and it came together a bit quicker. Either way, there should be a very indepth investigation of this album before making any judgements.

It is highly suspicious at first, but after a while, you'll be amazed.

Free Music Review: The Golden Rule: Listen to an Album (at least) 3 Times Before U Form an Opinion
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow, I stumbled across this site by googling lyrics to "Touch Me I'm.." and "Look at You", and read a couple negetive reviews and laughed. I don't agree with what the comments "stop imitating neil young" (of whom i love) and "Listen to all their older albums NOT THIS ONE". This album has many great elements that some others don't, albeit a couple of tracks like "Two Halves" and "I'm Amazed" are a bit too poppy for me on the first listen but Jim James will give us that explosive NY scream with his axe, and "Highly Suspicious" is very Prince, but as for ALL of the other tracks on this album are easily 5 stars for they're soothing themes and addictive solace lyrics and melody. "Librarian" and both versions of "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream" give me that feeling of uncertainty about my currant relationship....as if there could be a perfect fit somewhere else. Without boring you with personal blabber....I must say that unfortunately i am labeled a music snob quite often and gave this one a first listen and was slightly disappointed but came back with a couple more listens and couldn't put in anything else for the past 3 weeks! THIS ALBUM ROCKS AND IS ADDICTIVE!!!! Jim James is one of my new Hero's! PLUSS AS A BONUS TO BUYING THE WAX YOU GET A FREE STAMPED CD!!!! CAN'T BEAT THAT!

p.s. it's a 4.5 Stars for me but gave it 5 Stars to objectively make up for the Neanderthals that gave this album 1 star.

Free Music Review: Keep Louisville Weird
Hit: 5 Stars

Leave behind your silo nostalgia and conceptions of MMJ being "southern boys". First of all, this is not the band's original lineup. Secondly, Louisville is not the Deep South. It has a character all of its own and it is a funky eclectic one, so it is not surprising that jacket had this album in them. Third, this album, and I think Z as well, was recorded in NY so stop expecting "Southern Music", whatever you think that is.

I've been a fan ever since a friend played "Cobra" for me a couple of years ago. I've heard every song except maybe a few, and I am not afraid to say they have never written a bad song. I was shocked when I heard this album. I thought they were making a big mistake by not meeting expectations set for them by Z. The album grew on me after a good ten listens or so. It really is a solid album. I saw them play on the release date at Ear X-Tacy (independent record store here in Louisville) to a crowd of 500 (the band is thinking about releasing this show as an album) and again for their 4-hr-funkathon at Bonnaroo. These guys are good. Fans who don't get it and make that well known by screaming on Amazon are just making a mockery of themselves. Do yourself a favor and trust Jim James.

Free Music Review: what have they done?
Hit: 5 Stars

Love it love it love it. Saw them live @ rainy Bonnaroo 08' and went right out and purchased this record ... for me it's probably my favorite album in the last dozen years, and evokes comparison to Radiohead's epic OK Computer. (for me) Here's my buddy's email response after he went out and got it on my recommendation: "I liked it! The songs are a refreshing blend of everything from country to southern rock to 70's singer/songwriter to heavy pop and just about everything in between. The older analog effects work nicely with their overall sound. Everything from octavers to analog slapback reverbs and delays. Highly Suspicious sounded like something that would come of Prince singing and playing guitar while Devo and Oingo Boingo backed him up! Trippy. The drums left me wanting a bit, but the recording on them is lush and sweet. Kinda like how Lenny records his drums. The songwriter (if it's one guy) is definitely a product of the singer/songwriter genre of the 70s. I'd love to hear Springsteen do Aluminum Park! Was surprised by the diversity of the styles contained within. You wouldn't think you'd hear a track like Evil Urges and Sec Walkin on the same CD."

I smell a Grammy nomination. Love it love it love it.
