Free Music Notes for Evil Urges

Free Music Review: Simply Amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

I thought that Z was good -- but Evil Urges is pure genius. Is it the completely realized whole that Z is? Perhaps not, but the quality of its songs, its pure beauty and Jim James' incredibly expressive voice have never been better. There are so many instant classics on this record: the title track, Librarian, Smokin from Shootin, Sec Walkin, Thank You, Too, Touch Me I'm Going to Scream (both parts), Look at You, I'm Amazed... it's an incredibly consistent record and musically adventurous all the way through. There's something mysterious and moving about MMJ's music: it's hard to pinpoint, but it's difficult to stop listening -- I'm compelled to return to it again and again. This is simply an unmissable album that will change your life.

Free Music Review: Much Better Than 3.5 Stars...
Hit: 5 Stars

This is an absolutely amazing album. It seems like when longtime fans of bands here any kind of change in "their" band they get all sour or something. This is actually the first album of theirs I ever heard. I have since bought every album of theirs and listened to all of them more times than I can count. I thought this album was at least interesting and at times great. Going back and listening to their old material gave me a better appreciation for this album. The evolution theyre going through on this album is amazing and beautiful. A five star album as are the rest of em. Change is good people. This is a great band making great music. Enjoy it.....

Free Music Review: "not so different"
Hit: 5 Stars

When asked about the debut of this album, James said, "the music isn't really as different as everyone thinks it is." He couldn't be more right. This album incompasses so many different sounds never before heard from the and that it is very difficult not to give the band credit. From a band that has become unique for it's imrovisational live performances, and is one of the most exciting jam bands in the biz right now, comes this fantastic new promise for expansion. This album has everything an album should, but behind the music is something exciting for us fans to look foward to: ] I can't wait to see them at Waka this year.

Free Music Review: I don't get the negative reviews
Hit: 5 Stars

Sure, this sounds somewhat different than their previous efforts, but mostly only on the first 3 songs. I actually enjoy these songs, so to me it adds a new dynamic to the album. While Z was a more serious album, with religious overtones, this album is a little sillier and circus-like, but as a whole I like it as much as any of their earlier albums. I personally liked Z, but to lesser extent than It Still Moves or At Dawn, and I think album is stronger than Z. Especially the 2nd half of this album, which is outstanding. I think Jim James is having fun making this album, and I have fun listening to it.

Free Music Review: Great record
Hit: 5 Stars

I love this disc and also loved the past couple of MMJ's. Every one of their discs has had some weak tracks. That's not unusual in the CD world. There were 2 - 3 that I could have lived without on here. I thought the rest were great, though. Not just passable. Really great. Masterfully retro but updated in a good way. I don't understand all the naysayers. Nice to hear MMJ with less reverb. I don't see this as their worst or weakest effort. There's nothing wrong with a little experimentation and a lot of it on here sounds great.
