Free Music Notes for Evil UrgesFree Music Review: Different than Z but just as Enjoyable!! Hit: 5 Stars
My Morning Jacket has done it again with a wonderful new album. At times playful and other times serious; this modern "Crazy Horse" breaks out Neil Young like vocals and a number of themes that are reminiscent of great acts of the past. You can pickup vibes from Aerosmith in "I'm Amazed" to the Moody Blues in "Librarian". Many songs seem to connect me back to a previous artist (perhaps in homage, a nod, or coincidentally)... and yet this is done without My Morning Jacket compromising their own artistry or identity. I highly recommend it.
Free Music Review: Wow! Hit: 5 Stars
I saw these guys open for Pearl Jam a couple years ago and didn't think to much. I bought "Z" a bit later and thought it was a great album. That kind of got my interest sparked to this great band. When I saw a new album was coming out I was still a bit cautious especially after reading some very poor early reviews. I'm glad I didn't listen to them because this album is exceptional. If you've never heard MMJ before than think of it as a mix of The Flaming Lips creativity and joy with a helping of southern rock. You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Amazing Grace! Hit: 5 Stars
to start this is coming from a huge fan of the band my morning jacket, i really enjoy this album because it is by far the most different album they have released. so some people did not like the way the band went but honestly you just have to give it a honest, open heart listen to, through out the album you find some of the same topics as the other albums being love, heart ache, and living a easier happier life.yet there is still a fresh new sound about it. if you enjoy honest, loving, soul felt music you have to give this a chance.
Free Music Review: No wasted songs on this album. Hit: 5 Stars
MMJ has been hit or miss for me...meaning I think half their songs are amazing, and the other half just don't do it for me.
I took a chance on this one, and was blown away from the first listen. The songs are well written, and very diverse, even if they aren't as spacey as some previous releases. I easily rank this as one of the best releases of 2008, and after 30-something listens, I'm still not sick of it.
PS: just saw a replay of MMJ on Austin City Limits, playing songs from this album. It was brilliant.
Free Music Review: Will get played the most Hit: 5 Stars
Like many, I was put off by the falsetto right out of the gate and thought, what the hell happened to MMJ? Truth is, nothing. If you have listened to all of their material from the early demos through Okonokos, then you know that JJ continues to strive for growth in the art he creates. I am not easily put off by a different sound, and those of you who judged this album after one listen, for shame. It proves to be a very entertaining release, one that I now feel will get spun more often than their prior issues. Give it another try.
