2003's It Still Moves shows the absolute peak of the early sound of MMJ. All the earlier sounds are still there, the reverb vocals, the sparkly guitars, the classic rock production, but this time, the songs are bigger and brighter, and there are expertly-placed hooks all around. With a major label debut and a higher budget, the songs are right in your face, with some interesting surprises to boot (Memphis horns, anybody?).
The biggest difference between this album and say, At Dawn, is the drum work. Right off the bat, getting Patrick Hallahan on drums was the wisest decision the band could ever make. Part Bonham and part Blakey, the man defines the art of "rock drummer."
As mentioned in the last 2 albums, it takes a while for this stuff to sink in, but when it does, it lasts a lifetime. Highlights: Mahgettah starts out as a bright melodic ditty and morphs into a full-fledged rocker, Dancefloors is catchy and drips with southern rock, Golden reminds me of The Byrds' more experimental releases, One Big Holiday, which is MMJ's anthem, and the gorgeous and moving Steam Engine. The album slowly unfolds during it's 70-minute duration, and it doesn't feel forced or overlong. It all feels right.
Scott Floman said it best: "This is the rare album that can appeal to the stoner set who just want to "chill out" and rocker types who'd also like the band's uniquely spacey brand of Southern psychedelia." It's appeal is broad, from the jam-band crowd to the hipsters to your parents. This is the kind of album that will last forever.
