Free Music Review: The Evolution of "Urban/Black" Music Continues
Hit: 5 Stars

Many would say that it began with Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, but the truth is, the growth and evolution of so called "Urban" or "Black" music has been happening right under our very noses for quite some time now.

Beginning with the release of N.E.R.D.'s first album "In Search Of..." black music began again to take back the beautiful shape that it once inhabited. The sounds of the first album were a reminder to everyone who forgot that an MPC did not have to be the beginning and ending to a track. They were experimental with guitars and strings and most notably vintage synthesizers that evoked a spiritual relationship with the music that has been all but lost in the ever deepening abyss of Hip-hop and "Urban" music today. In Search of was critically acclaimed but never got the major pop repertoire that many albums of it's caliber usually do.

The most beautiful thing about this album "Fly or Die" may just be the fact that it doesn't try to be another "In Search Of..." nor does it even make you want to compare the two albums. This album stands alone on the beautiful melodies, riffs, confounding lyrics, and free drum beats that have made N.E.R.D. and their alter-ego production team 'The Neptunes' so attractive over the past 4 years. They have been one of the only groups to mention the fact that they had musical influences other than Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye and they've really proven that to be the case on this album. It even sounds like they have some Frank Zappa influences.

Whether we recognize it or not, the sound of N.E.R.D. has been the most ubiquitous sound of the new century thus far, and the sound has been, more often than not, the only foot that hip-hop could stand on -- with the notable exception of OUTKAST.

The songs on this record are as beautiful as they are badass. I'll give a brief synopsis of each song below:

1. Don't Worry About it - A classic evocation of James Brown.
2. Title track - exhilarating guitars, a cold ass verse rhythm
3. Jump - Another awesome rhythm on the verse sounds like some Third Eye Blind hook
4. Backseat Love - A Frank Zappa-esque sounding song -- very fonky.
5. She wants to move - The background/adlib vocals by Shay are funky as hell, way to go.
6. Breakout - One of my favorite 3 songs on the album. Just melodically moving. Push People!!!
7. Wonderful Place - Another one of my favorites and the hidden song after this one about the mother that saves her child is my favorite song on the album.
8. Drill Sergeant - Anti war song sounds like a song by the Monkeys but it's better. The melody of "bye bye mom and Dad and all" is just incredible. Makes me wanna go protest.
9. Thrasher - another Frank Zappa feeling on this song.
10. Maybe - The production on this song is unforgivably beautiful and moving. Evokes a Queen feeling.
11. The Way She Moves - reminiscent of the more racy "In Search Of..." like "Tape You" or something
12. Chariots of Fire - Funny song where they keep calling music "Mildred". The melodies again hold this song up way above standard. The synth solo is also beautiful.

Overall, I consider this album a classic and essential album for the Black Music Movement. With the success of groups like Outkast and N.E.R.D. we are finally able to watch music take it's new and beautiful form. Long live Free Soul music.

Free Music Review: Great Music!
Hit: 5 Stars

Okay folks. It may seem as if the guys of N*E*R*D are kind of weird, but that makes for some of the best music with the most entertaining lyrics and great production. I think this album is pretty hot. They have perfectly blended their influences together to create they're own unique sound. I think this album is very innovative in it's style. I also think it can appeal to many people. I am a hip hop fan for life, and this album is not, yet I can still get into it. I'm obssessed with the production which is not your typical "Neptune sound". It's got a rockier feel to it, but it's hot! Some of the lyrics are kind of interesting such as in Wonderful Place, Maybe and The Way She Dances, but that's N*E*R*D. I don't always get it, but you gotta love it. It's like they're trying to be serious and deep but I just have to laugh. Also, it seems as if they are really trying to relate with teens, on tracks such as Fly or Die, Jump, Breakout, and Thrasher. I think it's kind of odd and funny considering they are around 30. Yet, those subjects (running away, high school life) also makes for good music. It does deal with some other serious issues such as war, which I think is cool. They have creatively voiced there views, putting it to music. If your not used to N*E*R*D, give them a try, and I don't think you will be dissapointed. You will find something you'll like, I'm sure. If you can't get into the lyrics, I'm sure you can appreiate the production, which Pharrell and Chad are proud of because they played all of the instruments themselves. This album was a good effort. I like it, it's entertaining and fun. I call it feel good music. Lastly, Pharrell is not the best singer, but his voice works with the music. He doesn't try to go beyond what he can do in terms of range. I think he did well with how he says each word. It just works with his voice, he knows how to use it to where it sounds good. Also, I wish sooo much that we could hear Shae (or Shay) and Chad's voices, especially Chad, more. I really like their voices and I think they could also make some good songs. I know it's not like they're title to be lead singer, but I would have liked to hear from them more on this CD, IF, there was something I could change about it, it'd be that. This is not to say Pharrell can't handle it or does a bad job at it. He's great. The CD's great!

Free Music Review: The best album EVER!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have always loved N.E.R.D. Their first album hypnotized me with their wonderful, dazed, skater/punk, rebellious, hoodlum antic lyrics. But also, lyrics that many could relate to. These aren't experiences of some crazy rock star that wants girls, girls, girls. On many songs by pharrel and hugo, you see humor, pain, sorrow, torment, and growing pains that every teenager has felt at one time or another. So when Fly or Die cam out, I was excited. Was it going to live up to the standards of their first cd "In Search of..." After buying and listening to Fly or Die, not only do I believe it lived up to the standards of their first album, but it surpassed my expectations of a sophmore album. I have played this cd for a straight month in my car (and still playing) since I received this cd. I'm obsessed! Some might say the lyrics might be immature, but they are real. Pharrell is not claiming to be William Shakespeare. He's not trying to be a Stevie Wonder either. He's telling stories, experiences. He's telling us LIFE. I love every single song on this album. Not only are the lyrics RAW, but the melodies and the beats are just fantastic. These people are obviously geniuses. They put together music like no other, and you have to give them credit because they are absolutely original. No wonder every wants to work with pharrel. The man knows how to put together song. Even if you aren't a rock fan, and honestly i'm not, but after listening to this music, I must say most people aren't ready for his music. One hundred years from now, people are going to look back on his music and wonder how this man became ahead of his time.

Free Music Review: NERD does it again...only this time it is not a surprise
Hit: 5 Stars

A little while back i was just killing some time in a record shop and came across NERD's debut album "In Search Of..." and gave it a try. I had heard "Rockstar" on MTV and thought it was decent and was just willing to give it a try. Luckily, I did. I fell in love with the CD. Obviously, I have been eagerly awaiting their followup.

"Fly or Die" not only fufilled my NERD desires, but even elapsed them. NERD has taken what they did well on the first CD and tightened it and worked it into something even more special. So different than anything else out there right now (and most of it is garbage), NERD has certainly created something special with "Fly or Die". While the lack of hip-hop based songs might sadden some listeners (I was really hoping for a track like "Am I high?" from "In Search Of..."), I guarentee that the ecletic brand of music found on the CD is enough to win over listner. But note, as others have said, give the record a few solid listens; do not just casually give it a chance. It takes time to grow on you, and if you give it a chance as I have advised, I promise you, it will.

NERD is a welcome addition to the somewhat stagnant music industry of today. We always knew that they produced a high-quality product as seen through their production of hits by the likes of Britney, Jay-Z, and Nelly. But when seperated from these high profile stars (and the pressures of producing a number one record that comes with them), they take their musical knowledge and create musical majic. I reccomend this CD on all acounts; just give it a listen.
