Free Music Notes for Fly Or Die

Free Music Review: better than the rest
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a N.E.R.D. fan since the first time I heard In Search Of which was probably late 2001 to early 2002. My only criticism of the first CD was the corny lyrics on most of the songs.
Musically and lyrically, N.E.R.D. stepped up their game for Fly or Die. It sounds like the experimented with some new sounds too. The songs are serious, deep, and you notice something new everytime you listen. The music is unlike anything the neptunes have ever produced.

My problem with this album is the fact that they didn't have any rap/rock sounding songs like "Am I High" or "Bobby James." Still, everything on the album works so well you can easily overlook the fact that they all but abandoned their hip-hop sound for this one.

The other problem is the filler. It seems like there are one too many songs. In my opinion, Don't Worry About It, and Backseat Love didn't need to make the album. Bonus tracks like Waiting for You and Find My Way sound much better than those two songs.

Overall, they aced this CD. It should be in every CD collection. N.E.R.D. fans shouldn't play this CD expecting the it to sound like their debut album. Hip hop fans should listen with an open mind and enjoy the ride...

Free Music Review: They Can Mix It Up For Ya!
Hit: 5 Stars

Many people are gonna try and compare this too "IN SEARCH OF...", but they shouldn't because it's different, and a beutiful album in it's own way.

1.Don't Worry About It 5/5: Nice track to open with letting everyone know this will be a bit different but still hot.

2.Fly or Die 5/5: One hell of a good track, and nice lyrics.

3.Jump 2/5: It's got the Good Charlotte boys on here...unfortunately, and the song gets old.

4.Backseat Love 3/5: This track is alright.

5.She Wants To Move 5/5: Here we go, one hell of a track to jam too.

6.Breakout 5/5: I love this track, definetly a good one.

7.Wonderful Place 5/5: A beautiful song; it's just as simple as that.

8.Drill Seargeant 1/5: I believe they are trying to get political on this one; and I'm not fellin it.

9.Trasher 4/5: Cool track.

10.Maybe 5/5: A very good song with Lenny Kravitz and ?uestlove on drums.

11.The Way She Dances 5/5: Very fun Track, I'm liking this one alot.

12.Chariot of Fire 3/5: Good but I wouldn't choose this song to end the album with even though their is a hidden track later on in this song.

Overall this is a good album. I was excited about getting this cd and N.E.R.D came through.

Free Music Review: I Loved It!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a big fan of N*E*R*D! I really enjoyed this album- how much so? Well I was headbangging to some of the tracks- this from a person who mainly listens to hip hop and rnb.

I am glad this album was given much more exposure, in comparison to the first album. I hope this album does well in Australia, because rock/alternative music has a big following here. I am also happy that N*E*R*D are being more valued for their contributions to the music scene- long overdue!

Some reviewers commented about Pharrell's singing ability. I have an appreciation for his voice, because it is really unique, raw and authentic. I think Pharrell's voice carries the strong messages that the group is getting across in their songs well . Pharrell's voice is versatile and appealing because he varies his tone alot, going from sultry to melancholic tones. He takes risks too with his singing, striking those off key high notes, which gives songs that edgy, raw appeal.

I have always had an appreciation for the different genres especially those psychedellic undertones that N*E*R*D blend harmoniously to their music. I look forward to the next album & I hope N*E*R*D clean up at the next grammys!

Free Music Review: Well worth your time.
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought Fly or Die without really knowing much N.E.R.D. I rationalized that at least I was buying the disc of some creative guys who make interesting music. This was a gamble that paid off huge.
Fly or Die is genre spanning disc that taps a whole manner of styles. The component that sets it apart from other bands, who do similar things, is that N.E.R.D. are able to combine the cocky attitude of the hip hop mainstream acts they produce (as the Neptunes) with a genuine understanding of music. It's not rap or rap rock. It's funky pop-rock (if i can reduce it to a label like that). They mix guitar riffs equally with synths, and coat the tracks with Pharrell's double tracked vocals. Pharrell is a fantastic front man with his excellent falsetto.
Listening to this album it's easy to hear the influences that the reviewers point out- Steely Dan, Burt Bacharach, etc. It's the unlikely combination of these influences with the hip hop and rock n roll attitudes that make this disc worth your time.
Strongly recommended, even if you don't become a big fan of the album, it's still more energetic and creative than any number of 2004's releases.
