Free Music Notes for NOW 26Free Music Review: Quite a few outstanding songs with good variety Hit: 4 StarsWhen reviewing music, I ask myself a few questions; for a specific song:
1. Would I pay to download it from Amazon or iTunes?
2. If I got it free (e.g. as a gift), would I put it on my iPod? &
3. For a CD, I'd also ask: how many of the songs meet the above criteria? To me most CDs by a single artist only have 1 or 2 out of 12 songs or so that meet the criteria, making them not worth the money
I'd hope that a "Best of" or compilation CD would have a MUCH higher percentage of songs I'd buy or download otherwise. The prior Now, Vol. 23 didn't IMHO, but this one does. I'd have done 9 of the 20:
#2 The Way I Are is actually sung mostly by Keri Hilson who does a fab job of singing it. Lovely.
#4 Shut Up & Drive features Rihanna's fine singing voice with less of her over-repetition of lyrics than other; it's not beyond her range as other songs might be
#8 Beautiful Girls is really catchy--when it 1st came out, I searched the radio to hear it again & again--if the lyrics don't turn you off, it's fantastic! It was a challenge finding out the title at first--so I could download it. DJs aren't as crisp in describing songs they're playing as they used to be. They need to showcase the songs better.
#11 Big Girls Don't Cry has the same title as an old 4 Seasons song, but it's a totally different one. This song shows off Fergie's singing ability with less of a heavy rap sound. I like it a lot.
#12 Who Knew? Is the first song I ever downloaded. Whoever did the arrangement is a genius--reminds me of the fantastic arrangement of Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape" though the style here is quite different. Pink shows she has pipes, can really sing, can put feeling/meaning into a song, can subtly insert stylistic words/inflections, etc. It's one of my favs of all time. Fantastic IMHO. Deserves more recognition.
#13 When You're Gone is probably my favorite Avril Lavigne song--though in fairness, I haven't heard all that many of them. The one's I'd heard before didn't' impress me much, but this one does. Perhaps, I should check her out better.
#14 Hey There Delilah was played zillions of times on the radio, but I never tired of it for some reason. It's certainly a touching song in which one can identify with the singer & the supposed girlfriend listener. Deservedly a big hit. I'd already downloaded it before.
#17 Rockstar is another of Nickelback's fine songs--their singles tend to be great, but their albums often have a lot of totally different type songs--that I don't like as well as their terrific singles. This song reminds me of "Life's Been Good to Me" by the Eagles & "Cover of the Rolling Stone" by Dr. Hook. It's a riot IMHO. A really fun song with a good beat--a good foil to modern Macho & Gangsta types.
#19 First Time is yet another fantastic Lifehouse song--they've had quite a few. I'd downloaded it before. You can easily identify their sound/style when you hear it even if you haven't heard the song before.
To me, most of the other 11 songs were okay with only one or two I really didn't like at all. Also, 9 out of 20 is pretty good, esp. when these compilations try to cover many different tastes/genres. Probably worth 4 ? stars IMHO, but your taste will differ from mine: "different strokes for different folks.
p.s. I'm not big on rap music, as you can probably see, but I was very impressed with Kanye West at the Grammy awards--his acceptance speech was terrific!
