Free Music Notes for Live at McCabe's Guitar ShopFree Music Review: Pleasant acoustic album Hit: 4 StarsI wish there had been a few more rockin' tunes. None of the new songs really stuck with me. But Nancy has a wonderful voice and overall the album is a delight.
Free Music Review: I hate to see them apart, but Nancy is great flying solo!!!! Hit: 5 StarsThe production on this album is about as minimal as one can get: recorded on DAT at a guitar shop. Yes, the result is raw, but is far FAR more pleasing to the ears than the processed and congealed drivel played over and over again on the radio. I have long held that Ann Wilson is the greatest rock vocalist of all time (male OR female). It would be hard for Nancy to not be upstaged by her sister when it comes to vocals (it's the other way around, of course, when it comes to the guitar.) But she really gets to step out into the light and shine here. She's got a raw sweetness to her voice, which sounds even sweeter when she's playing her guitar. After seeing the list of songs, probably the one that excited me the most was Simon & Garfukel's beautiful "Kathy's Song". Oh, what she does with this one! It is simply gorgeous; her voice and guitar are in perfect sync, which is what made this such a great song to begin with. I would be hard-pressed to find another artist that could pull off a cover of this song with this much class and style! She reaches just the effect that Paul Simon had intended with this one, and then some. Wow! Highlights include "Everything" (a new song), "Love Mistake" (a 1983 song only known and admired by serious Heart fans), and "The Rain Song" (not the Led Zep song). And her cover of Joni Mitchell's timeless "A Case of You" really made me smile. Very fun to hear her replace her sister's voice on "Even It Up". And hearing her sing "Angels" (Heart's tribute to John Lennon after he died) very touchingly evokes the harmonies of Ann. I already know that I'll still be listening to this album in 30 years!!
Free Music Review: More like Jewel than Heart or the Lovemongers... Hit: 5 StarsI hope that major buzz is generated for this album. I was a big Heart fan - slightly less of a Lovemonger fan - and expected this album to be sort of a half-assed vanity piece with so-so songs. I was totally wrong and am blown away by this captivating performance and top-notch songs! Excellent guitar work! It is, however, a departure from what I would identify as a "Heart-monger" sound and is more akin to the things that Jewel does. According to the liner notes, this album was recorded on DAT. It is exquisite proof that great albums rely more on what's going on at the microphone rather than the other equipment!I will wear out this CD!
Free Music Review: Ya gotta get this one if you're a HEART fan... Hit: 5 StarsI have waited for this one for the longest time, and the wait has been worth it. Nancy proves that she is more than just a "pretty guitar player." What a great voice! She's enjoying herself here, and it shows. My favorites? Legheads Lament and Even It Up. Now, can we possibly get ANN to do a solo album also?
Free Music Review: Way to go, Nance! Hit: 5 StarsI've waited for a long time to hear this! An avid Heart fan from the 70's and 80's, I've followed the Wilson sisters' careers, and watched Nancy bloom from a steady and sure rythm guitarist, to the virtuoso she is today. If you were like me, and loved the token "Nancy song" on the old Heart albums, like "Treat Me Well" and "Nada One", you'll love "Live at McCabes". Nancy gives us 7 new songs and a few surprises, proving to anyone who could ever have doubted her, that she is more than just a harmony singer to Ann, and the steady beat of "Heart". The first cut is Nancy's version of "Even it Up", in which she seems to be breaking away from the shadow of her sister Ann's powerful voice, and staking her claim, as it were. (You're even, sis.) The years have only made Nancy's voice stronger, and her guitar playing more amazing than ever. For the first time, we can really hear what she is capable of, without being overshadowed by the electric guitars of Roger Fisher and Howard Leese. Her cover of "A Case Of You", is a brave undertaking, yet one that must do Joni Mitchell proud. I even detect a bit of a Joni-esque "yodel" in her voice now! New songs like "Half Moon", "Sister" and "Ground Zero" are evidence that Nancy writes from her soul. Her voice is as pure and sweet as warm milk and honey. I too, frequent McCabes guitar shop, and know what a great place it is to see a show. Sorry I missed this one! Do yourself a favor, and buy this CD.
