Free Music Notes for Narnia: Prince Caspian [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]

Free Music Review: Gregson-Williams is powerful and original - yet editing could have been better
Hit: 5 Stars

I love Harry Gregson-William's soundtracks - he has a fresh, original method of composing which is exciting to listen to. When I saw Prince Caspian, several things he does with the music hit me as genius, and I instantly bought the soundtrack.

And there is my "yet." Like many soundtracks, it seems the editing process was more of a "sampling" of the music in Prince Caspian - which is irritating to no avail! For example, the theme that caught my attention most of all was the mouse's theme, with the muted trumpet. What a great choice! Yet the soundtrack only slightly alludes to the theme - twice - whereas the movie contains an extended solo during the raid on the castle. The track named after that event doesn't even contain a snippet of that theme - for shame!

It is reminiscent of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, in which the theme of the movie can be found ONCE. While in Prince Caspian you can hear the main theme (hundreds of times), additional colour and texture the composer so brilliantly entwined into the music of this movie has been excluded from the soundtrack.

Although I still recommend it, I will always be frustrated at the soundtrack-editing process. It makes no sense to me.

Free Music Review: The Musical Magic Returns
Hit: 5 Stars

Harry Gregson-Williams' sequel score for 'Prince Caspian' captures all the magic of the movie with a bit of it's own. While featuring many re-recorded themes from the previous film, 'Caspian' portrays a darker Narnia than it's predecessor with new themes and sounds.

The 'Caspian' theme, featured throughout, is a sweeping, epic tune that makes me shiver in awe every time I listen to it. Gregson-Williams develops some of the old themes along with the style of the soundtrack, adding a nice, somewhat familiar touch as you listen.

Perhaps my only gripe would be that there are a few musical passages featured in the movie are missing from the soundtrack...which happens in all soundtracks, but that doesn't stop it from being somewhat disappointing.

Overall, an entertaining companion piece to the wonderful film it was composed for, and an excellent addition to the score collectors compilations.

Free Music Review: Prince Caspian Soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

I have both "Narnia" soundtracks and I have to say that I very much enjoy much of the music; I don't find all of the songs at the end of the CD to be very enjoyable, however. I love the themes Harry Gregson-Williams created, and I would say that if you are a fan of music and the "Narnia" films, both soundtracks would be very enjoyable to you. I find the music of "Prince Caspian" very good and Harry Gregson-Williams is obviously a talented musician. If you are a fan of very cinematic music, you will find it in some of the scores of the "Prince Caspian" soundtrack.
Although I think I was disappointed at first that the CD is not in a jewel case, I don't mind it that much now, although the corners of the cardboard case do get a bit damaged. I would have appreciated having the length of the pieces on the case, but in general I have been pleased with this soundtrack and have been glad I purchased it.

Free Music Review: Finally!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been waiting for this soundtrack ever since the first Narnia movie was released in 2005. The soundtrack for The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe introduced a whole new world to the listener; so magical that whenever I listened to it, I was transported into CS Lewis's epic story. The music is a masterpiece that goes above and beyond what some people might expect out of a "children's" movie. This is definitely not just a children's movie.

This second soundtrack continues the magic and wonder. Like the first soundtrack, it sends chills down my spine at some amazing moments in the score. Some parts could make me cry out of joy or sadness. It's unbelievable how Harry Gregson-Williams could once again take me to this amazing land. This music is so different and this composer continually opens my eyes to new instruments, emotions, and memories with every score he composes. This is a masterpiece!

Free Music Review: Moving Score With Depth and Feeling
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm floored that anyone could give this soundtrack less than five stars (four at the least). It positively overflows with elegance, emotion, and movement. It is darker than the first soundtrack, but this sets it apart from its predecessor and plunges the listener deeper into the troubled but beautiful world of Narnia. Harry Gregson-Williams does wonders incorporating new music with the already established Narnia themes and at times the music is so moving it pierces through you with poignancy and depth that many composers struggle to achieve. The ending pieces revive the sometimes (appropriately) heavier tonality of the score with a light, positive, hopeful and somewhat bittersweet mood that always leaves me satisfied, never depressed. Both Narnia soundtracks are among my favorites in my extensive soundtrack collection and every time I listen to them, I enjoy them just as much as the time before.
