Free Music Notes for Street's Disciple

Free Music Review: His raps are trifle
Hit: 5 Stars

Rap double albums are the poison of hip hop. There hasn't been one rap double album that I have listened to yet that I have dubbed a classic. Now I love 2Pac like anyone else but his "All Eyez On Me" album is way overrated, with all the best cuts on disc one. His posthumous double album releases such as "Until The End of Time" are much better listens. Notorious B.I.G.'s "Life After Death" would have been a classic if he would've took the best cuts from both discs and put it all on one disc. Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse" was more of a curse than it was a gift. When I first heard this album was a double disc, I thought to myself that it would be interesting because Nas has always been one of the most profound rappers in this era and he can probably take on a load of a double cd because he has a lot to talk about. Combined, this album is over 86 minutes long which is pretty fair for a double cd, but I would suspect that there is some filler material looming.

Also, this a note to the "genius" who constructed the liner notes for this album. Liner notes serves a purpose and it is not just for them to look good. The purpose for liner notes is to make them easy to read. Small yellow writing on a solid black background is hard to read. Nas is starting off wrong with the "Intro." It's way too somber and could have been cut or been combined with "A Message to the Feds, Sincerely, We the People."

Disc One Overview:
1. Intro
2. A Message to the Feds, Sincerely, We the People - That's a very lengthy title huh? Nas just spits that fire on this one and recovers from the useless intro that could have been left on the cutting room floor.
3. Nazareth Savage - Just 4 minutes into "Street's Disciple" and we already come across the first skippable track. Nas goes out of his way to describe how bad of a "savage" he is but it's really annoying and it doesn't get better with more listens. Some people may disagree with me, but this song is at the best average and couldn't hold a jock to the better tracks on this album.
4. American Way - Nas, just like with "A Message to the Feds, Sincerely, We the People," rebounds well with a Q-Tip track featuring his wife, Kelis. Q-Tip uses a simplistic, but well-known, George Clinton "Atomic Dog" sample to create one of the political tracks on this album. Nas is basically calling out the Bush administration throughout.
5. These Are Our Heroes - Originally titled, "Coon's Picnic," Nas calls out the black people who he feels aren't doing what's right for the black community. Kobe Bryant gets a whole verse where he is ripped and in the second verse Nas goes off on P. Diddy. Weren't they friends before? Anyways this track is one of my personal favorites and towards the end, Nas gets a little comical.
6. Disciple - Clearly one of the best cuts from either disc. Nas has a line where he says: "Lead flowin' around like a Frisbee, Italian dons from Sicily kiss me / This ain't 50, this ain't Jigga, this ain't Diddy, this ain't Pretty / Pain, power, pu**y and pist**s, lyrically no one, hold none near me, hear me." That's pretty much the definition of Nasir Jones. He doesn't have to go commercial to get airplay. He pretty much spits that real stuff whether you like it or not.
7. Sekou Story - First part of a two part song where Nas pretty much tells a story of a man named Sekou and his trials and tribulations. The first verse has an upbeat flow to it and in the second one the beat slows down and Nas plays the role of Scarlett, Sekou's woman.
8. Live Now - I'm not feeling this one. Nas allows Scarlett to shine on about 2/3 of the track. My analysis of Scarlett is that you will notice a mixture of Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown and not their better halves mind you. I also heard a rumor that Scarlett is actually Nas's voice digitally altered. That only makes this song even more wack.
9. Rest Of My Life - Features Amerie on the chorus. Definitely a strong song. This one continues to get airplay in my cd player.
10. Just A Moment - Features Quan who is a very good rapper and singer. This is also "Street's Disciple"'s current single. Quan is really talented and Nas allows him to shine with two verses plus the chorus.
11. Reason - The second best cut on disc one behind "Disciple." I don't know who is singing the chorus but it really doesn't matter because Nas's lyrical content is freakin' amazing.
12. You Know My Style - People have probably already heard this one before, since it was on a lot of mixtapes before the album's release. One of Nas's flaws is not being able to make that smash hook that'll get him airplay on the radio, but this song has one of the best hooks of 2004.

Through disc one, Nas is doing pretty good thus far. Let's see what disc two is sounding like (at least to me).

Disc Two Overview:
1. Suicide Bounce - Busta Rhymes does the hook and this a pretty impressive Nas production track. This one is above average but not enormously shocking to me.
2. Street's Disciple - Now this is definitely one of the best tracks from either disc (might even be the best) and features Nas's father, Olu Dara. You can really tell that Nas was feeling the beat to this one in the second verse where he dedicates it to his slain friend, Ill Will.
3. U.B.R. (Unauthorized Biography of Rakim) - This track is garbage. Yeah...I said it. I mean, a lot of earlier reviewers have been giving Nas props for this one but it does Rakim no justice. This was a horrible time to put this song in in this slot. I heard that Nas is going to have a video for this one and lets hope Columbia advises him not to do it.
4. Virgo - Features Ludacris and Doug E. Fresh. This one is also on "The Red Light District" by Ludacris. They pretty much rant on about being virgos and it's one of those "I'm a rapper, I got money, let me holla" songs. This one is good, however.
5. Remember The Times (Intro) - Totally unnecessary
6. Remember The Times - This one is a take it or leave it type of tracks. I am getting tired of the "chicks I used to b*ne" songs that are redundant in hip-hop. I'll take this one, but it is on the lines of "cut" material.
7. The Makings of a Perfect B**ch - Alright, now this one is definitely "cut" material. Nas tries to recreate a 2Pac classic too much and it falls flat on its face (just like most 2Pac remakes these days).
8. Getting Married - This one is fair. It's way better than "The Makings of a Perfect B**ch," however.
9. No Else In The Room - OMG. This is one of the worst attempts for a club hit I have ever seen. Nas even had the audacity to make this the longest song on "Street's Disciple." Maxwell pretty much croons towards the end, and I almost skipped it.
10. Bridging The Gap - When I first heard this song, I didn't like it. But this one grows on you after a few listens. It's nice to see fathers and their sons making music together. Especially in hip-hop.
11. War - This one is a little too smooth. I still like it but Keon Bryce croons on this track a whole lot.
12. Me & You (Dedicated to Destiny) - All I can do is laugh when I hear this. If you've ever heard Nas on the "...I Am" promotional songs, you know that Nas is not a good singer. That's enough said.
13. Thief's Theme - The hook uses a familar saying that Nas spitted on "The World Is Yours" back in his "Illmatic" days. Pretty much the hardcore version of Nas, and if you haven't heard this one by now, I laugh at you.

Overall, "Street's Disciple" gets 4.5 stars in my book. The problem with double albums is that there probably is just enough material for the artists to just cut intros and skits to fit all of the songs on one disc. "Street's Disciple" meets that same formula, even though it runs over 86 minutes. If Nas would have cut lackluster songs such as "The Makings of a Perfect B**ch," "No One Else In The Room," and "Me & You," this would've been a classic if he would've put the best cuts all on one disc. But to give Nas a break, "Street's Disciple" features few filler songs and holds it ground well, which can't be said by his counterparts' attempts.

Street's Disciple Poster

Nas is incredibly talented, but he can't really justify the heft of a double album any more than Jay-Z or Wu-Tang could. Still, most of Street's Disciple is as impressive as anything he's done in the previous few years. He's still hip-hop's most compelling and sophisticated lyricist (sorry Eminem, Jigga), and more than a few tracks here burn with his verbal heat?-a flood of phrases and metaphors that inspire imagery as rich as in any movie. Unfortunately, Street's Disciple is twice as long as it needs to be, especially with insipid fare like "The Makings of a Perfect Bitch" or tired club cuts like "No One Else in the Room." You wish Nas had forced himself to cut a single album because half of this double-CD set is truly hot. --Oliver Wang
