Free Music Notes for Get Some!Free Music Review: Their Best Yet.... Hit: 5 StarsI popped this in the car cd deck after listening to the Cult's "Electric" & Gun's "Appetite For Destruction" constantly for the last two weeks. You know what? This effort by Nashville Pussy blends the best elements of those two albums and throws in a bit of sleaze like only the Pussy can do. This may arguably be the bands best album, seriously. There's an energy and vibe here not even the first album can touch. The songs flat out rock, the production is first rate (this album has a great overall "sound"), great lead guitar from Ruyter, the new rhythm secton of Karen & Jeremy pound LAMF and Blaine's vocals are killer as usual. I can understand the references in previous reviews to Blaine sounding like Alice Cooper...but only slightly. Blaine is Blaine, case closed. If anything he sounds more like the late Sam Kinison combined with someone like Brian Johnson from AC/DC. The other thought that struck me is the "depth" of Blaine's lyrics. Although they are written in a profane, sleazey, trashy, redneck sort of vain...there is a "profoundness" here absent from the bands previous releases (how often, if ever, has one of the most important figures in the hisory of organized religion been refered to as the "super chimp"?). Throw in a smokin' cover of Ike & Tina's "Nashville City Limits" (as good as Seger's from "Live Bullet") and you've got a 5 star plus release.
All in all a must have add to cart. Anyone who is a fan of this band will consider it money well spent.
Free Music Review: It's Pussy Time Hit: 5 StarsThe boys and girls are back for another over the top hard rocking glam fest that makes it feel like 1973. If you are not familar with Nashville Pussy, and that is highly possible because they will never get played on the radio, they are a hard rocking, glam banging, punk playing, bunch of red necked hillbillies. Take Skinner, AC/DC and add the vocals of Alice Cooper and out comes Pussy. As a matter of fact, the lead singer is sounding more and more like Alice Cooper with each record. And that ain't a bad thing at all. Some juvinile lyrics but who cares. It is guitar driven, attitude laced real rock and roll. You gotta love it.
Free Music Review: Corey Parks has gone, but the Pussy is Firing on all Cylinders Hit: 4 StarsThis is their best yet ... my heart broke when Corey went off to do her thing elsewhere and the Pussy struggled a bit since, but have come back with a vengeance here. Think of vocals that combine Motorhead's Lemmy with American Dog's Michael Hannon and Black Oak Arkansas' "Jim Dandy", throw in a power rhythm section and you have a rough idea of what to expect. Add a sense of humour, some clever lyrics, absolute political incorrectness with no apologies and no frills guitars and you're getting close. And Ike and Tina would be pround of the Pussy's rendition of Nutbush City Limits too.
Free Music Review: Hillbilly rock and roll! Hit: 3 StarsThe Good
The sexually opening track "Pussy Time" is purely juvenile in nature, but if I wasted at a roughneck bar, I'm not gonna care. I'll be pumping my fist to the high-energy rhythms asking from more. The opening lick to "Come On Come On" is just killer. Lead guitarist Ruyter Suys lays down more great licks during the breaks. "Going Down Swinging" has one of those choruses everyone can chant along with and relate to in some manner.
Blaine Cartwright sounds eerily like Alice Cooper on the lethal concoction "Hate and Whisky". Jeremy Thompson bangs the drums like a madman on "Hell Ain't What it Used to Be"; an ode to the Dark Lord himself. "Raisin' Hell Again" comes at you with break-neck speed and will leave you coughing in its dust. If you want a song that pretty much defines southern rock, look no further than Nashville Pussy's cover of "Nutbush City Limits".
The Bad
Vocalist Blaine Cartwright has no voice control when he challenges his range. Otherwise, he's perfect for this style of music.
The Verdict
Southern-fried, tractor-pullin', beer guzzlin', bar brawlin', hillbilly rock and roll!
Free Music Review: God I love this band Hit: 5 StarsIt's been a long 3-year wait for us NP fans, but Get Some has been worth every minute.
From the first few, thundering powerchords, you know that all is well in pussyland. There's a really fresh, energetic feel to this album that is obvious from the get-go. The songs are faster and harder than Say Something Nasty, but not as "punk" as the first album. A bit more "metal" I guess you'd say, and Blaine's voice sounds spookily like Alice Cooper on some of the tracks...and that's certainly not a bad thing.
The addition of new bassist Karen Cuda seems to have fuel-injected things a bit. The production is much better than the previous records as well. Don't let this scare you off, but they sound sharper and higher-budget without losing any of the raw energy. Lyrically I didn't find myself laughing out-loud as much as I normally do, but there are still some real gems to be had here, especially on "Meaner than my mama". There's even a cover of Ace Frehley's "Snowblind" that utterly blows-away the original.
Overall this album does what NP does best, kick maximum a**, and this time they do it with more polished production that only increases the roar. Crank it up and give thanks to the rock n' roll gods that this band even exists. Now, if only I didn't have to keep driving 100+ miles to see them live.
