Free Music Notes for Live in Concert AlbumFree Music Review: Cruise and career control move by former Maniac Hit: 2 StarsTo there ears, Merchant's post-Manaics career has mostly been a big snooze. Yeah, she's got a terrific distinctive voice. But in the Maniacs, she was primarily responsible for the lyrics. There, her frequent lyrical preachiness was overcome by the tunes and arrangements. Now, on her own, she is fully responsible for the music as well. Unfortunately, she comes up with nothing exceeding second tier Maniacs at her best, and total piffles at her worst. Thus we get the worst of both worlds: Uningratiating lyrics and uninspriring music. The live versions on this record work a wee bit better than their studio counterparts, but still can't elivate these frankly unimportant songs to a significant level. The general malaise is only emphasized by the single Maniacs cover she includes. The difference in the quality of that song and those from her two solo albums says nothing good about the latter. The two covers she performs also stand above the self-penned material. Not that these are any great shakes--they're good songs, but neither bests the originals by David Bowie and Neil Young. Ultimately, this album comes and goes without leaving much of any lasting impression. Which, when compared to the generally terrific live album Merchant performed as a parting gift with the Maniacs says all one needs to know about where she's been since leaving. Ultimately, if you truly thought her two solo albums were inspired and and inspiring, you'll like this souvenir. But if you thought her best work was with the Maniacs, this won't change your mind, and your money would be better spent elsewhere. dap
