Free Music Notes for MotherlandFree Music Review: Natalie does it again! Hit: 5 Stars
After her brilliant 1998 album Ophelia, I didn't think Natalie would be able to surpass it, but she equals Ophelia on her new album Motherland. The album's first single, Just Can't Last, is reminiscent of Kind & Generous, but it's still a fun song to listen to. My favorite songs on here are Golden Boy and I'm Not Gonna Beg. Natalie's voice is SO BEAUTIFUL, though it annoys me a little on Saint Judas. This is definately Natalie's most musically adventurous album to date and Natalie fans shouldn't be disappointed with it! I love this album just as much as Ophelia, though it's much better than Tigerlily. Natalie Merchant is the best!
Free Music Review: One of her best Hit: 5 Stars
It's almost erie that the track "This House is on Fire" with its arabic rythems was recorded before 911. I think she has premonitions, when writing. I consider this to be one of her best works.I've bought two copies now. She is captured at a time in her life where her voice had deepend, and her writing matured a bit, A snapshot of a time in a great musician and writers life. The songs are excellent, even though this is the last album I believe of a long contractual obligation, which she is now free of and probably felt like a weight around her neck, you wouldn't know it by listening. A must have for any Natalie Merchant fan.
Free Music Review: Natalie is back. Hit: 5 Stars
The first thing you'll notice is that on her new CD, "Motherland" her voice is much deeper, more mature than on previous releases. It's a nice change...and I loved her voice before too. I would say this CD has a more varied feel than her previous release, "Tigerlily". There are some fairly "rockin'" songs as well as her beautiful ballads. Many of the songs have a semi-Chris Issak feel. That of "Wicked Game" more than his other rock-a-billy tunes. This is a fabulous recording. If you're a Natalie Merchant fan, it's a must and if you're not already a fan it will make you one.
Free Music Review: A Talent Fully Exposed Hit: 5 Stars
At last we hear in Motherland the full extent of Merchant's talent with sophistication and maturity, but with the same spirit and feeling of early 'Maniacs' recordings. The title song alone, a lovely nautical sounding tune with layered instrumentation and wonderful progressions, is worth the price of admission. Lyrically and musically, this is her finest effort yet, combining her trademark voice with excellent accompanying musicians (including Mavis Staples on a couple of soulful numbers), a variety of carefully chosen musical styles, and perfect production. This CD hasn't been out of my reach since I received it.
Free Music Review: Natalie with a twist (but with the same amazing lyrics) Hit: 5 Stars
Natalie Merchant is one of the rare artists who continually improves with each new CD. She keeps getting better and better. "Motherland" excels by incorporating diverse musical genres that takes the listener through a memorable journey with each listen. There are many songs that I really like so it would be unfair to highlight a few. But if you think you might enjoy Natalie with a twist (but with the same amazing lyrics), then I would suggest that you pick up this CD. I previously thought that Ophelia would be her masterpiece but Motherland surpassed all my expectations.
